Yes, I realized as soon as we met Judas that oh, no: we're going to really like Judas and then see him turn and betray Jesus. I agree: Judas was not irredeemably evil as some have portrayed him. There is a clay animated movie called, "The Miracle Maker" about Jesus which portrays Judas's humanity (somewhat in the same way as The Chosen:) he expected Jesus to be a warrior who would defeat the romans, but instead Jesus dashes these expectations and explains what will happen to the Son of Man. And that version of Judas is filled with fear about what would then happen to himself. I suspect Luke's version of Judas will act not in fear, but foolishness. This version of Judas has been young and foolish from the start: not learning from mistakes but ever returning to foolishness and childish pride. Naive, foolish Judas dreams of doing something the world will always remember...and he will get his desire.

People always crap on Judas but never seem to realize that we are no different from him. Even after becoming followers of Jesus, we still sin and betray Jesus. A wise man once said “Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, while we betray Jesus for free”. Plus the fact that the disciples had no idea that it was Judas who would betray Jesus really shows how much they all liked and trusted him.

Way back when Judas was 1st joining Jesus, he had a scene with his sister. At one point they were discussing safety. Judas stated "if he's truly the Messiah he can't be killed." If Judas is operating with this assumption, it adds another layer to his betrayal of Christ in the show.

I don't think Dallas could have made a finer selection to portray Judas than Luke Dimiyan. Luke has those deep soulful eyes and thin facial features that in the beginning enhanced his look of innocence and honor at being chosen. Now his face is filmed partly in shadow. Those beautiful eyes look sunken back and tired. As Judas approached Jesus with the Romans, Judas is ANGRY and then disappointed. I believe for the first time Judas understands none of this will play out as he thought. He will be even more surprised at the treachery behind 30 pieces of silver. I knew that stinker Hadad would be an instigator. I suspect Hadad is amused at how easily he can persuade the feckless Judas. Poor Judas, his trap is set. 😢

Because I like Judas and have so much empathy for him, I want to believe that if he would’ve had two more years with Jesus, he wouldn’t have betrayed him. Since I was young, ive been pressured to make something of myself that could be measured in wealth while at the same time hearing the scriptures every Sunday. Then when Judas goes to visit his friend there is more pressure to take payment. It’s all around us. There is no escaping it. Money can mean safety and security but then we let it self actualize us and we need to let the word of God do that.

The explanation of the scripture of “talents” is such an incredible lesson!!! We are not meant to hoard the gifts we are given and the profits we earn. We are meant to share them with others, using them in dedication to The Lord. This is truly an UNLEARNED lesson for so many Jewish as well as Christian believers!! Thank you @thechosensleuth for bringing this to our attention.

I've seen this for the first time in theatre with a Polish narrator. When the words " We trust you Matthew, indefinitely" are spoken, we do not see who speaks and because of the narrator we did not hear the voice of the speaker. It was such a cool surprise to watch it with original sound and hear that these were Peter's words!❤

I’ve heard this theory before. That Judas really didn’t think Jesus would be crucified but rather he’d push the issue on the Mt of Olives and at that cross road Jesus would squelch the Romans and conquer here on earth. Such an interesting theory. We know none of the apostles thought bad of him when Jesus said one of you will betray me and they all said, “is it I”. And Judas threw away the coins and hung himself. If he just wanted the money he’d take it and go buy possessions.

There was something i didn't quite agree with when i watched Luke Dimyan's interview in the episode 5 live stream. We know he's always been sympathetic to Judas, and that's a good thing to be, but towards the end he summed up by saying something along the lines of "Judas couldn't help it" almost implying that it was Judas' fate and he didn't have a choice in the matter. I don't know if he really meant it to come across that way, but the way i see it (and the way the Chosen seems to be portraying it) was that Judas absolutely did have a choice. Much like the rich young ruler who wanted to follow Jesus and ALMOST was willing to give up everything - but couldn't quite do it - we keep seeing Judas choose his own way and his own understanding over the lessons Jesus was trying to teach them. Every disciple came to Jesus with a bunch of flaws and misconceptions, as do we all, but the key is that you have to be humble and surrender your will to Him.

That's why it really put Judas out when Matthew noticed something was amiss. If it weren't for Matthews aversion to following the books he would have pursued it. Despite this I still think this will niggle at Matthew and not fully let drop it in the back of his mind.

Thank you again! Brandon! Excellent video as always. I was thinking about this when you started speaking about Judas's theme: I wonder if they chose to do three notes (the final note being off-centered) to symbolize the Trinity and to show that Judas may understand some of Jesus's teachings, but ultimately can't (and won't) fully understand Him/God/Holy Spirit in the end. Regarding Judas not knocking on the door, I never thought of that scene being a sign of his deceptiveness (what a great observation!). I assumed it was symbolic of Judas literally not understanding Jesus's "Knock and the door will be opened to you" or any of Jesus's teachings. He refuses, for whatever reason, to fully open up and trust God/Jesus. Do you think that they'll continue to push the "I don't understand, but I'm trying" narrative for Judas or do you think it will eventually change into being something more sinister (such as he adopts bitterness, anger, etc. which leads to hatred and the betrayal)? I love how many layers are in this show. Big shout-out to everyone involved for doing such amazing jobs. I also want to shout out Luke for his excellent portrayal of Judas. I was genuinely saddened to hear he's getting hate from viewers - I think he's doing a great job. EDIT: Welp, I just got to the talents part of the video and felt convicted when you said we need to use our talents for God's kingdom. I used to create art and write all the time, but due to being wiped out from my current job (which is very logistics-based) my creativity is practically non-existent. People around me keep telling me to go back to what God gave me, but I've dismissed their requests. It seems I need to make time daily to do something creative even if it's difficult. I hear you, Lord. 🙋‍♀

I saw the scene with the gifts in the box as setting up a contrast for the anointing at Bethany. (I haven't seen episodes 6-8 yet, but I assume this will happen either at the end of this season or the beginning of season 5.) Seeing a woman smash a bottle of expensive perfume to anoint Jesus will probably hit different for both the audience and for Judas when we've witnessed other people giving valuable gifts as financial support.

I'm glad I am getting some insights, even though they are not Biblically based because none of this is actually in the Bible, it's all just assumption, but I never did understand the hows and whys of Judas and I always kind of felt sorry for him and didn't want to judge him at all because the Bible says he repented and went and hanged himself, which to me would mean he felt so badly about what he had done and so unworthy that he took his own life. And that is just very sad. Maybe even if none of this is true, it can help me piece together some other aspects that may have occurred to help me understand why he would do what he did, and then why he would immediately freak out after finding Jesus condemned, give the money back, repent and hang himself. It's inexplicable to me. Some movies have suggested other things, like perhaps he was fooled into thinking that the religious leaders just wanted to talk to Jesus and Judas wanted them to understand who Jesus was, so he took it upon himself to "get them together" so to speak, but then realized he had been used by the religious leaders. There has been much speculation about Judas down through the centuries. What "some believe" and what "others believe" is the difference we have to this day. It's between those who study the Word of God themselves, and those who just listen to others who tell them what's in the Word of God. The ones who study, KNOW. The ones who just blindly believe what others say, DON'T. Perhaps we don't see the truth because of our own perceptions of what "should be" and our expectations. That is the sin of assumption, or even presumption. I believe the children of Israel committed that in the wilderness, and probably we all do on a regular basis. It's a very difficult sin to figure out. Kind of like the sins done in "ignorance" which really means, you don't even know or understand that you are sinning. But it's a very real thing. What we all deserve is hell. What we get for believing is eternal life. We can never repay that because it is a gift, not merchandise. And everything we have, our life, our breath, and all physical things, is from God, not from us. We didn't make any of it. It is all given. So if you believe that, you will never be under the spell of thinking you're not getting what you deserve. Never ask for what you deserve, you just might get it.

People are always giving crap about Judas but never realize that we’re no different from him. A wise man once said “Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, but we betray Jesus for free”. Even after becoming followers of Jesus, we still sin and betray Him.

Also Judas lied to Jesus saying that guy was like a father to him when clearly the guy doesn’t care for him. He doesn’t think of Judas as a son or even a friend at all. Judas called this guy like a father but Rahma truly believed Jesus as her Father. Quite different and a little sad. But Judas is exactly like what the Bible says “they like the darkness more then the light”.

He should never have gone to see Haddad. I know he went struggling with understanding Jesus's teachings. Thats why you never go visit your past life once you have decided to follow Christ. If youre in it continue on until you find vlaritg in prayer. He didnt hate Jesus, he was mortally convinced that he could help him be the military leader the Jews were expecting. He had no idea at this point what Jesus was doing.

It’s so odd because I’ve grown up as Catholic. I know the story. I know like the back of my hand. I know Judas betrays Jesus and that it needed to happen because of our salvation. But The Chosen just makes me feel bad for him and want him to make different choices and to talk to Jesus.

Love your drawing attention to "the Judas theme" and the function of the (always beautiful) music! But I can't agree that Judas' eventual actions were innocent, or that they had "nothing to do with money." All three Synoptics show him taking the initiative in approaching the Jewish leaders, who he knew wanted Jesus dead. In Mt he starts by asking, "What will you give me?" Lk says, "Satan entered into him" right before that (later, Jn agrees.) This is clearly presented as something much more nefarious than simple misunderstanding and wrong-headed hopes, which all the disciples were guilty of. All three Synoptics say the leaders "agreed" to give him money, as though it were a condition or demand on Judas' part. It looks more like Judas is totally disappointed in the type of Messiah Jesus conceives himself to be, loses all faith in him, wants out, and uses his position to get money on the way out. He quickly realizes that what he has done tortures and kills an all-the-same innocent person in the process. But he still appears not to believe in Jesus and his message of forgiveness, and so he throws the money back and despairs. I don't believe the "standard narrative," universally presented in the New Testament, is wrong, or that Jesus sadly calls him "son of perdition" for nothing. So I disagree with your interpretation this time...but always enjoy your in-depth look at the artistry of Chosen creators! Thank you so much!

I always thought of Judas as no more than a smart business man who always had money on his mind. On the other hand Matthew being a tax collector, he and Judas would have been the right people to build a financial stable income and have a building dedicated to Jesus like we have today. However Jesus didn't appoint them for that purpose. But they would have been good in that way in my opinion.

I have a real hard time with your assertion that implies that the way Judas is depicted in The Chosen is the truth as it happened in history. When you commented that the negative way people talk about Judas as being horrible wasn't the truth. (Something to that affect.)
@TheChosenSleuth
@TheChosenSleuth 11 күн бұрын
I absolutely never said this is the exact way it happened, though this is not a singular belief from the chosen. This is a theory of how Judas thought overall many scholars and people have this belief. I don’t think this is the definitive truth of what happened, but culturally this makes the most sense.
@samueljennings4809
@samueljennings4809 11 күн бұрын
@marlenemclane3200 I’m not sure what exactly what you’re referencing, but the gospels mention that they didn’t suspect Judas at all, so honestly I think that the idea of a more subtled and subdued Judas is consistent with the historical account.
@samueljennings4809
@samueljennings4809 11 күн бұрын
@ marlenemclane3200 also I don’t think it means that Judas was a “good guy” but rather take his story as a warning and cautionary story about what happens if you let secret sin take root in your life, what that can do to your heart. Judas’ love of money caused him to start stealing, and that secret indulgence corrupted his heart and gave way to let Satan enter in. It’s a warning about guarding our ow hearts, because we can let ourselves get into terrible things if we continually justify little secret sins; like boiling a frog in water.

Styx is the river that flows through the Underworld. When the Greeks, Romans and many Egyptians died, their family and/or friends would place coins on their eyes for the ferry man. According to tradition, the great warrior Achilles was dipped into Styx by Thetis, his mother, when Achilles was an infant. This bestowed immortality on him; however, his mother neglected to notice she was holding him by the heel of his right foot. Thus he was vulnerable there. Also, according to tradition, the great coward, Paris of Troy, (with the help of Apollo) was, ironically, the killer of Achilles. Using a poisoned arrow Heracles left in the city a generation before (poisoned, I think, with the blood of the hydra), the god helped him aim the arrow at Achilles heel. As far as Judas is concerned, I hope they aren't too sympathetic with him. The scriptures paint Judas as a son of perdition That shouldn't be ignored or mitigated in any way by Christians as Jesus said, concerning Judas, that it would be better for him that a mill stone were placed around his neck and he be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Do you guys think Judas was possessed to do what he did or was it just plain greed? I’ve heard different opinions?
@TheChosenSleuth
@TheChosenSleuth 11 күн бұрын
I explain it quite a bit here, but the short answer is neither. I do think because of the actions he took, satan took hold of his heart and pushed Him in the final days. Overall though, Judas was trying to push Jesus to be the messiah he thought he SHOULD be ( Killing the Romans, raising an army etc. ).

@TheChosenSleuth Given his mindset he probably thought that by betraying Jesus he would force God himself to smite the Romans and the Jewish religious class which he had nothing but contempt at. It's only when he realized that he was instead the conduit for Jesus execution that he throws the money away and hangs himself.

@@TheChosenSleuthI mean everything works in the way God has determined it to be. With out Judas, Jesus may not have ended up being that suffering servant nor maybe would he have been crucified. Now it may have happened eventually but Judas is kind of the harbinger of Jesus death and eventual resurrection.

The saddest thing is that, through his lack of understanding, he didn't realize Jesus would've forgiven him. If he'd waited 3 days, he could've been the most powerful witness of God's grace the world ever knew! But, of course, none of them realized that reality until after the resurrection. 😢

I hate to say it, but I kinda feel like Judas. Imagine being raised to wait for the messiah, having a non-biblical traditional image of him, and yet Jesus being so different to what we expected. Maybe Judas had ambition, but he had no spiritual vision.

I think this show is really starting to cross the line of false gospel. All of these things you all are talking about are not doctrinal. This is not the same Judas of the Bible, therefore this is not the same Christ. I can only hope that there aren’t too many souls who don’t already know Jesus who know better falling to the path of false idols.
