In South Africa, the wealth disparity is clearly evident in Alexandra township. Located a few kilometres from the Sandton district, it is often referred to as "Africa's richest square mile".
Talking to Al Jazeera, one person there described the dire economic inequality in the area.

Black people in South Africa were misled into believing Democracy is simply placing a vote next to the party you love, and when it fails you over again you keep the political leaders in power till they get it right. The first 2 elections were very understandable, people were fresh from an oppressive system. Now it's plain for all to see what it has brought the poor 29 years later

I have a fair understanding the point you're trying to make. There loads of Africans who are of the believe that Democracy has done more harm than Good, and has the late Afro beat maestro Fela Anikulapokuti proposition of adopting or returning to the system of our forbearers before the advent of Colonialists.

It's an insult to be so wealthy in natural resources but 29 YEARS later we are still "Developing" 😂 meanwhile we employ useless Deputy Ministers that spend millions of tax payer money per year going up and down on holiday and we cry and say "We have no schools , no this no that" we have everything we need but unfortunately the powers that be don't believe in sharing at all.

Lol and yet far greater poverty existed then, with far more people poor and underdeveloped back then, not even having piped water or electricity connections. So no, objectively not better and no, wasn't very developed. It was half industrialized. And the ANC is literally just rent-seeking off the same system with some social improvements. By "negotiated settlement". And the only tech and military stuff was literally done by the West as part of the Cold War with SA being essentially an "unofficial Nato member", so no, nobody in the West would have been "confused" at their own activity.

@beautifulempatheticliberal5204 What does that have to do with the population and how they lived? The Rand was a gold mining labour complex-backed currency from a time when currencies were calculated based on gold. Once the gold standard was abandoned for fiat currency, the Rand lost as much value in the 25 years before 94, as it did in the 25 years after it.

Every time there's a huge scandal by the ANC (the party in power in South Africa) there's a report that comes out reminding us about inequality/privilege/apartheid. Please Al Jazeera keep the focus on the failings of the ANC, corruption and our on-going electricity crises. Everyone is tired of trying to be divided and we want a better future for our citizens.

It's all just an Oppenheimer plan from the 1950s, which is why he funded the opposition Progs (forerunner of the DA) even then. They realized they needed a multi-racial oligarchy to run the same system, in order for it to be more stable than it was. So a half black oligarchy and a co-opted comfortable black middle class. Keep double digit percentages of the country in zero-production informal underclass as cheap labour in labour camps (or "townships") like Alex. Then add some external jobseekers to atomize and cheapen it further. Same stuff, different day.
