It’s that time of year, time for working cows and to wean the calves! I’ll take you in the corral with me as we sort cattle and wean calves off the cows. Join me for some more ranch work on Farmer Tyler Ranch!

Weaning calves - "Kinda like people used to do with their kids." Hilarious!

that was my fav part of this video as well! I love my kids but they know well and hear often that I'm counting down the days till they are 18! They think it is funny but I know they will all be ready to move out by the time they are 18-22!

Hi I'm Karnataka, India I moved from Bengaluru city to a remote village here 3 years ago. I own a family cow, jersey and her heifer. I have been watching your videos since a couple of weeks now. I love your farm, love that it's built as per requirement and not very heavy investment like other farms that I have seen on KZfaq. Here in India cattle are reared only for dairy and there is no beef industry as such because cow slaughter is illegal here. So dairy is just a side hustle or a hobby for a few people like me.

That comment of being surprised how many cow noticed and looked at the camera surprise ME. Growing up milking cows the old fashioned way I was surprised on how few noticed it. Cats have nothing on a cow's curiosity!

@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
Thank you yes mine works pretty good but part of it is the cows know how it works too, the older ones anyway. Just remember when sorting, cows naturally want to go back out the way they came in. Sometimes you can use that to your advantage. Good luck tomorrow and thanks for watching!

Farmer Tyler Ranch yes they do but the way they have it set up it’s made to go in line and out the other idk why they built it that way it’s a place I lease cows do good they kinda know where to go but the calves make it so difficult

My uncle always weaned by the sign. When the sign was in the heel it was calf weaning time. And to be honest there was a lot less bawling than another guy I knew who said. The sign was right when he had time. But 50-60 bawling cows and calves could get on your nerves if you had barn duty during that time.

I recommend gate training your cows it makes separating cows and calves much easier. It doesn't take long when you gate train them every time you feed them.

Great vid. I don't know why, but my kids really enjoyed this one. When you mentioned that the cows kept noticing the camera, every time a cow would look at the camera my kids would laugh like crazy. Our cows once refused to go through a gate that they grew up around simply because the wheel was broken. I couldn't make them budge till I fixed it. I often wonder who's in charge...cows, kids, me...?

Haha good!! Kids can be fully entertained by the most unlikely things can’t they? Glad you all enjoyed it!
@vickyburton24344 жыл бұрын
I had once saw a video of wiening when calves had a small plastic piece in their nose so they could not nurse for a few days and separating cows and calves was effortless and not at all traumatic . None of the cows and calves cried. That is the way I would do it if I had cattle again.

This may be a stupid question Tyler but why would a vet castrate a calf when they could put on the elastic instead? You do it the best way in my opinion.
@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all. It’s actually a widely debated topic as to which way is better. I think they cut because it’s fast and 100% reliable. I like banding better myself
@keithmartin16274 жыл бұрын
My vet cuts. I once asked why? His reply. If I cut I get 100% accuracy, if I band there always a chance they’ve pulled one testicle up into her abdominal and you have a bull not a steer.

Not really sure. She’s always had a pretty poor body condition yet she always breeds and raises a decent calf. Over the last few years she sadly has been going downhill little by little. If she’s comes up open this year she will be culled. But such is life on the ranch. Thanks for watching!

@farmertylerranch43995 жыл бұрын
Yes. The bulls go in with the cows when the calves are around 2 and a half to three months old so when they get weaned the cows are around 6 months pregnant
