Your explanations for each process helps those that have never experienced the challenges of this process or those who don't understand why it's done. Both the cows and calves are looking really good. Big calves coming off those cows and the are holding their own. Love to watch your patience and quiet way with the cattle. You're the best separator of cattle I've ever seen.....I can herd them all...lucky for me it's a small herd...everyone is just going thru the squeeze chute to be separated there for loading...even if we have to back the truck up...in and out...it's still a brute force method of mechanical separation.

Grew up on dairy farm calves only spent first 24 hours with mom to get colostrum. They did get their moms milk for first few days. Glad you explain why you do what you do. It helps those who don’t understand why you do it.

I am thinking it would be a good thing to film the fence line and the racket they make. I am certain there are many folks who have no clue what you are talking about. Personally, I like this style of weaning as well. Plus, if you have a determined calf and mom they will work out a way to nurse. 🤣

Your videos are so informative! A person could probably get a good start with a small herd from these videos. Reminds me of helping my grandpa with his herefords when I was a kid. He always had fewer than 10 head, and it was STILL a lot of work, in all kinds of weather (east-central MO).

Thanks for the video. Please can you describe the whip you use. It is hard to see in your video. Did you buy it? Make, model?

That was a big jump down from the high bails.

Maybe you could put something on the top of a few of those wooden fence posts that would hold the camera. That way it wouldn't be near the legs of the cattle. You could put them at strategic spots around the corral and be able to just move the camera as needed

We just worked all our cows and calves today. My hat is off to you doing it by yourself!! How many different cameras do you use?

Hi from Namibia. We have a device here called a "neusring", directly translates to nose-ring that fits to the nose of the calf to be weaned. As the calf tries to suckle, the spikes on the nose-ring irritate the soft under parts of the cow and she moves away. This discourages the calf from suckling, but the cow is still there, her comforting presence reducing the weaning stress on both the calf and the mother. Hit me up buddy.

Feed them Quality liquid feed. I would suggest Ruma-Lic it’s by far the best on the market.

Curious as to why you wait until 8.5 months to wean, we typically wean between 4-5 months so that March/April calves can be sold late October/ early November. I’d rather not pay to feed them through the winter. Climate differences maybe (Texas) or different end goals for your calves?

My grandpa always said it was better to immediately trailer the calves completely across town in a pasture away from major roads and highways. They make the transition faster then the mothers.
