Field artillery has evolved into one of the most feared weapons on the battlefield. Increasing it's firepower, psychological impact and it's mobility. It wasn't just on land that artillery showed it's versatility. It has had to learn how to fly as well as fight. In World War II guns even took to the skies. Taking the battle to the enemy, and a family of air portable hard hitters is born.

The guy with the British accent at the start of this video, Andy Robertshaw, was very much in ERROR when he referred to the US WWII 155 ‘Long Tom’ gun as a ‘Howitzer’. The ‘Long Tom’ was a ‘Field Gun’ NOT a ‘Howitzer’! A howitzer has a much shorter barrel and is capable of high angle plunging fire. A field gun has a longer barrel and fires at a much lower trajectory, but for a longer distance. How do I know? I am a school trained Artillery man. It never ceases to amaze me how the producers of these “documentaries” try passing off some ignorant fool as an “expert”.

Thats debatable. 'Howitzer' is a term with long history but is usually applied to cannons that primarily deliver indirect fire and 'field gun' to cannon that primarily deliver direct fire. On this basis, the 155mm Long Tom was clearly a howitzer. Indeed, even Wikipedia describes it as a howitzer en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_howitzers What a particular army or artillery school classifies as a howitzer or field gun, at any particular period of time isn't necessarily a universal or absolute truth.

@@yahhboii3112 Wikipedia also says in a different place that it is a field gun. However, it depends on which army you are in and when, how an artillery piece is classified. That said, all 155mm guns are called Long Tom www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a510939.pdf And even the US Army Field Artillery School is or was in the habit of calling all its 155 mm artillery pieces 'howitzers' www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a134349.pdf Andy Robertshaw was therefore correct whatever some guy posting on KZfaq might claim.

@DOUG HEINS Yes, you are quite correct regarding the US 155s. However, 'Long Toms' were originally naval cannon and the British regularly often called anything with a moderately long barrel a 'long tom'' eg www.armsregister.com/articles/articles_documents/nzar_a49_long_tom_update.pdf www.shootinguk.co.uk/guns/air-rifles/how-can-i-find-one-of-the-old-long-tom-air-rifles-20883

The US artillery fire and control network is what made it superior to other nations (aside from having more artillery pieces and ammunition at their disposal). The ability to quickly bring multiple batteries to bear on a particular target and respond to changing battle conditions. The system was made more survivable and reliable by decentralizing and multiplying the routing of communications, both wireless and wired.

Field artillery and mortars caused 70% even 80% of casualties during WW2. On the other hand air bombardment hardly more than 2-4%. But of course air power had much more strategic and long range logistic targets. There has been lots of over hype about tanks. However tanks without infantry support were very vulnerable. And when artillery could eliminate infantry following those tanks whole offensive was doomed to fail. Artillery need intelligence, reckon, signal and logistics quality.

Iowa clas battleships had computers. Admitedly not digital. Analogue integraters, resolvers, servos. These fire control tables cost a million in todays prices, probably more. You compute for your heading and speed, their heading and speed, number of rounds fired, wind strength and direction, temperature, pressure, humidity, Coriolis effect and the other one pulling it down. Flight time over a minute. At full range the hit rate was pitiful, very low percents. Better at blasting land targets that are hard, do not move and have insufficient range to hurt you. Late war, get a monitor with a mahusive gun and drop all the tonnage you can on the trenches and hard points.

THE VOICE OF THE GUNS by Gilbert Frankau We are the guns, and your masters! Saw ye our flashes? Heard ye the scream of our shells in the night, and the shuddering crashes? Saw ye our work by the roadside, the shrouded things lying, Moaning to God that He made them - the maimed and the dying? Husbands or sons, fathers or lovers, we break them. We are the guns! We are the guns and ye serve us. Dare ye grow weary, Steadfast at night-time, at noon-time; or waking, when dawn winds blow dreary Over the fields and the flats and the reeds of the barrier-water, To wait on the hour of our choosing, the minute decided for slaughter? Swift, the clock runs; Yea, to the ultimate second. Stand to your guns! We are the guns, and we need you; here, in the timbered Pits that are screened by the crest, and the copse where at dusk ye unlimbered; Pits that one found us - and, finding, gave life (Did he flinch from the giving?); Laboured by moonlight when wraith of the dead brooded yet o'er the living; Ere, with the sun's Rising, the sorrowful spirit abandoned its guns. Who but the guns shall avenge him? Battery - Action! Load us and lay to the centremost hair of the dial's refraction; Set your quick hands to our levers to compass the sped soul's assoiling; Brace your taut limbs to the shock when the thrust of the barrel recoiling Deafens and stuns! Vengeance is ours for our servants: trust ye the guns! Least of our bond-slaves or greatest, grudge ye the burden? Hard, is this service of ours which has only our service for guerdon: Grow the limbs lax, and unsteady the hands, which aforetime we trusted; Dominant ones, Are we not tried serfs and proven - true to our guns? Ye are the guns! Are we worthy? Shall not these speak for us, Out of the wood where the tree-trunks are slashed with the vain bolts that seek for us, Thunder of batteries firing in unison, swish of shell flighting, Hissing that rushes to silence and breaks to the thud of alighting; Death that outruns Horseman and foot? Are we justified? Answer, O guns! Yea! by your works are ye justified -- toil unrelievéd; Manifold labours, co-ordinate each to the sending achievéd; Discipline, not of the feet but the soul, unremitting, unfeignéd; Tortures unholy by flame and by maiming, known, faced, and distainéd; Courage that shuns Only foolhardiness; even by these, are ye worthy your guns. Wherefore, - and unto ye only - power hath been given; Yea! beyond man, over men, over desolate cities and riven; Yea! beyond space, over earth and the seas and the sky's high dominions; Yea! beyond time, over Hell and the fiends and the Death-Angel's pinions. Vigilant ones, Loose them, and shatter, and spare not. We are the guns!

A component by component examination of American and German artillery shows that almost from the beginning of America’s participation in the conflict the U.S. Army had the superior system. American artillerymen did not try to combat the enemy’s artillery by building bigger guns. The approach from the beginning was to build a better system and it worked. That was clear to thoughtful observers at the time. Viewing the Italian campaign, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel commented, “The enemy’s tremendous superiority in artillery, and even more in the air, has broken the front open.” During the Normandy campaign, Rommel added, “Also in evidence is their great superiority in artillery and outstandingly large supply of ammunition.” By any reasonable standard, especially during the latter part of World War II, the American artillery arm was very clearly superior to that of the Germans.

The name says it all ... "Flak" is short for "Flugabwehrkanome" or Antiaircraftgun in English. The Artillery counterpart would be the Pak or Stug

Here's one thing i have in mind. How on earth could they even see let alone calculate the angle in order to hit something in 23 miles away accurately completely analog?
@dandini0698
@dandini0698 3 жыл бұрын
@Just some yeti with internet access here's the problem, at that range by the time you adjust your opposition is no longer there. Since its both of you are in the ocean moving. You gotta do that calculation&adjustment in like 3-5 seconds for that data to be accurate.

Advanced trig and accounting for variables like air pressure, powder tempature, wind, and several others. I've calculated missions using just slide rulers, a chart, and a protractor. Granted it was more like a 8 mile shot because the 105mm howitzer only ranges out to 12 miles, but it can be done

@@erwin669 dude its 8 miles with modern equipment vs 23 miles with 1940ies equipment. I think that ship is beyond the horizon if i recall you line of sight ends around 8 miles. After that curvature of earth just hides whatever is on the ground. So they have to rely on detection equipment of 40ies to make that shot. Which is my point, how the F.

@@dandini0698 A protractor, chart, and a slide rule isn't modern equipment. It is actually more primative than what was on the WW2 battleships. We didn't earn the priviledge of using modern equipment until half way through our training and when I was in all safety data had to be computed manually. It’s all trig and algebra finding the firing solution for the shot. We can do up to 25miles, but it’s not something we get to do that often because of restrictions can do in training. But the math is the same either way.

@@erwin669 before using any of that you have to know the exact location of a moving object that is 23 miles away while you are moving also in the sea (constantly shifting ground ie point of impact shifts). I dont think they had gyroscopes or something like that at those times. That part is what makes it hard imo.
