Today we talk about if it's a good idea to train weapons or empty hands first. Some advocate for only weapons training and some will advocate that you must learn empty hands first before touching a weapon. Let's discuss.

Excellent video, very interesting... to be good martial artists I think that everyone should learn to use weapons, and the guidance of a good teacher so that the disciple does not fall to the dark side.👍👍👍

I would say weapons came first. We were likely using tools, clubs, etc before we were fully humans and primarily used for hunting. And evolutionary it makes sense, you want to down your competition with the least amount of damage to you(no antibiotics means a cut from a dirty weapon means infection and death) if any empty handed styles were first it was probably wrestling. And teach someone to punch or swing a stick. The stick will come naturally with low risk of self injury while even a good punch can break your own hand. If we evolved to strike with our bare limbs why does it cause so much self damage, theory of evolution should say that in modern times we have stronger bones and maybe different hand bone setups/claws due to 300,000 years of hand to hand combat

Great stuff, have you seen any parallels between FMA and Wing Chun? I know before the modern world they most likely didn't have any interaction; the training methods are different but they both seem to control the limbs, work 1/2 beats and kick the legs. Of course, this parallel development could just be since humans have two arms, two legs and a torso if you put them in similar environments they will come out with similar solutions.

Weapons are equalizers to more physically superior opponents.
