White privilege, that's just a Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber thing right?
Wrong! Kat brings insight on how some Latinos can actually benefit from white privilege and how to use our privilege for good.

Yep. I’m Mexican-American but my mom who is Mexican, looks like a brunette American white woman. Some of my cousins have color eyes and are fair skin, my grandma was Mixtec and some of my cousins from that side are very indigenous looking. Like we’re mestizos. We have European, native, African, Arabs and Asians. Sometimes all mix in one.

Giovanni Vazquez sure. Indigenous people of any land are just that. Then in addition to indigenous people there is also Negroid, Caucasoid, and Mongoloid please really look up that and also the history of “Latin America” and you’ll easily find that it has nothing to do with the Hispanic ethnicity. Hispanics can be black or multiracial or indigenous and that’s is it. There is no white hispanics those are Europeans (Caucasoids).

Reading these comments is depressing, it’s 2018 and people still don’t know the difference between ethnicity and nationality. It’s the saddest thing really. ( Insert country here) is not an ethnicity, it is your nationality because either that is where you were born or that is the country your parents are from. Ethnicity is your blood line, if you don’t know your ethnicity, take a dna test.

Romanous keep us updated on your dna test. It can be really confusing trying to ethnically label yourself but best wishes to you on your dna test, hopefully you get the answers your looking for. My journey has been tough, especially because in my family we’ve been taught that you shouldn’t be proud being native. Most of my family opposed to the dna test, they kept asking why I wanted to know when that part of us is long gone. But today I can say that I am a proud native woman. My dna test results were what I was expecting but I also got a bit of a surprise in them. I’m 93% Native American, 3% Polynesian (I was left like wtf) 2% East Asian, 1% Pacific Islander and 1% Iberian.

I can tell you from experience growing up in San Diego that the overwhelming majority of Latino Americanos align with white supremacists, especially the Latino gangs like the Mexican Mafia in So Cali who largely align themselves with Neo Nazis to attack Blacks on their behalf. So there is more than just discrimination going on. There is a lot of self hate in the Latino Community. And the root of the this hate all stems from white supremacists & the colonials who continue to whiten up Latin America & the Caribbean, because the white race is in fact is the only group at a negative birthrate (going extinct) in the world.

There's a lot of white Mexican dreamers still fighting to stay in America I don't know how privileged they feel. What is happening all over the world is colorism, with this idiotic view on what people consider beautiful. In the end of the day people are not happy with what God gave them. People in Jamaica bleaching their skin. White people are tanning injecting their lips and butt to look different. Asian people making their eyes round. People that don't like themselves are always trying to label people. We are all one race with different coulture and beliefs. What is happening is more dicremination against people that don't look,think, and talk like you. And this is coming from all sides, not just Latinos, whites, African American exetera. God only created one race. The human race.

I even only speak Spanish at home to my parents and family. But when I go out into the real world I’m automatically seen as a white guy, even by other hispanics despite my name being Pedro. There’s been various times when I interact with other Latinos who are like my parents in the sense that their English accents are thick and don’t really feel comfortable with English and would rather talk in Spanish. So I talk to them in Spanish and they keep replying in English and they never switch over. This is so true! And even more so when you travel to areas that don't have much experience with latinos. I'm a white Venezuelan, now living in South Korea. Foreigners get treated differently here and the quality of that treatment is very much linked to the colour of your skin. For me, I pass as a typical white foreigner... I just look so European, it's always automatically assumed and I've had a much more positive experience than my Afro-Latino friends (who are assumed to be African-American) and Asian-Latino friends (who are assumed to be Chinese, Philippino, etc.) because of that assumption at all. The first step in this situation is education. When a country has so little experience about the other world, it's basing it's ideas on what they consume in the media.... And, let's be honest, american media is not the best source to be using when forming ideas about cultures and races.

In Latin America, unlike the US, race doesn't divide us culturally but social classes do. Latin America is first and foremost Classist. Still it is true that in higher social classes people tend to be whiter and of higher European descent. However there are tons of poor white Latinos especially in countries like Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil and these people are discriminated against because they are part of the lower social economical class and have a different culture, way of talking (which they share with other poor mestizos and afro latinos) that differentiates them from the dominant group. So it is not right to talk about white privilege in the case of Latin America where social class is a more of a determining factor than the colour of your skin when it comes to discrimination.

I'm a pale skinned argentinian living in the United States. I can't fit in with white non-hispanic americans because I'm latina and speak spanish but also can't fit in with the majority hispanic community of mexicans living here because I look white. Maybe someday race, ethnicity, language, and skin color won't define a person but rather their personality, compassion, knowledge, etc. will. Until then, I'll just keep trying my best to make friends through my personality traits and not my looks. And maybe someday white privilege will cease to exist, but for now I will fight to prove to those who deny it that white privilege does in fact exist and needs to end because it's absurd to think that skin color plays a role in what you are worth as a human being. Skin color means nothing, it's just skin, and where you are from and what you speak doesn't define you as a person either. It's what you do, what you say, and what you think that defines you. Let's end all of this unnecessary discrimination that some people have to deal with on a daily basis. Let's unite this hella divided world once and for all.

I get where you are coming from. I don't fit in with the white Americans based off of culture differences. My fellow Mexican Americans don't really accept me either because they think I'm Caucasian. When I try to make friends they would talk to eachother in Spanish like "la conoces?" Because there is no other reason for a white girl to approach them. As a kid I would see discrimination against Mexican children but was treated like a white kid. Then when I was in bilingual classes in elementary school other kids would bully me thinking I was the only American in the room and treated me like I didn't belong there. I was confused why after I told other kids I was Mexican and proved it by speaking Spanish they suddenly treated me better. Of course I don't blame them but it's sad that things like white privilege causes this split between people (even children). I'm lucky to be born white but as the "white sheep" of my family I wish I could not feel like an outsider literally everywhere I go. There were even problems when I was born. My dad thought my mom cheated on him because he is dark skin and even though my mom is lighter skinned, I was still whiter than her. But I'm not stupid, I have seen how my white skin has helped me over the years and I agree with this video. I along with other light skinned Latinos, we need to fight against white privilege.

OutSpoken- Latino is not a race. People of Central/South America are very racially diverse and this diversity differs country to country. In Mexico the majority of the population is Mestizo which is a bi-racial mix between European Spaniards and Native Americans. In Puerto Rico or Cuba there's a big Spaniard population but also a huge amount of mulattos which Is a bi-racial mix of European Spaniards and West Africans. Latin is a term that comes from the Italic Latin tribe that we now call the Romans. They conquered most of Europe and because of that many European languages today derive from Latin (Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian). The reason Latin America was given its name was because the French under Napoleon wanted to show European dominance over the Americas that separated the French, Spaniards, and Portuguese from the English. The only thing these civilizations had in common was that they spoke a language derived from Latin so they gave it that name. Genetically or racially speaking the only people who are "Latin" would be those who descend from the Romans, which would be Italic peoples of Italy. Culturally, Latin is just a language but, for example, the Irish speaking English doesn't make them English. Latins connection to the people of "Latin America" is simply that they speak a language derived from Latin, nothing further. Racially they are mixed, mainly of Spaniard, sub-Saharan African, and Native American descent.

i dont think its as simple as black and white so to speak. the u.s. needs categories for mixed people, and thats the main problem. we cant put majority of latinxs into those bubbles provided since most of us are mixed, and whether we pass or not is often subjective to who's being asked. we do have colorist privledge thats true, but white racial privledge is really just there to those that are white or 100% undeniably passing.

The problem is that people have a warped understanding of what "Hispanic" means. Hispanic, is obviously not a race, this much seems to be understood by some. A Hispanic person is anyone with a historical and cultural relationship with Spain, regardless of race and ethnicity, whether of full or partial ancestry. That's what the category "Hispanic" is for. Latino/na on the other hand is specific to people with cultural ties to Latin America. You're definitely right that it's not as simple as black or white, it can be Asian too, for example. That's why almost every form asking for your race in the US includes Hispanic/Latino among the options. To expand the list would be redundant as choosing "Hispanic/Latino" includes any race and any mix of said origins. I have no idea why the paper in the video does not have his option, but something tells me it was done on purpose to set the stage. Seemingly a choir for an ideology. As for all this talk of privilege, I think it's nonsense. I have much privileges, more than most. I was born in Africa, I'm black and Hispanic. Only in the West is this nonsense prevalent, and it's quickly turning simpletons into self-professed victims. How sad.

My nationality is Mexican-American. Hopefully knowing the difference between these three will give you a little bit more of an understanding of how to identify yourself that is if you wish to identify/label yourself.

I am a Mestizo and I consider myself privileged and I certainly don't pass as white in Colombia. I think most racist attitudes are directed at poor people and yes, there are many stereotypes against black and indigenous looking people in the country, but so are there stereotypes against white people from the countryside. It is never as radical as in the U.S. In fact, Colombia shows more and more African-looking people in the media, like Claudia Lozano or many football players. Many national singers and athletes are black, as well as beauty pageant contestants. They are venerated by all social classes. Latin America had its own social development different from the U.S. and I believe that your transposing U.S. rhetorics on a non-U.S. American society. Here, every single person who is not part of the political caste can't be considered privileged. Just a handful of people has the means to afford luxurious lifestyle or being heard by the state. Those in the bottom of society come in all shapes and colours. I am privileged, because I was one of the few Colombians who had access to higher education and be a graduate. I was lucky and most people who are as lucky as me, are obvious Mestizos.

Germain Martel Just because a small handful of Black people are being shown on TV doesn't mean that black people are being represented enough. Hella black people in America are on TV, but usualky for the wribg reasons and playing stereotypical roles, and colorist issues, and that is an even bigger issue in Latin America, South America etc. No one ever said that there aren't stereotypes against white people. We all know there is stereotypes against everyone, but don't try to downplay racism like it's not a big deal, cause it is. Privilege isn't just about rich and poor, it's also about who gets either accepted or discriminated against, based off of skin color, race etc. There is a lot of eurocentricism. Mestizo isn't a race btw
@GD-jc3wx
@GD-jc3wx 6 жыл бұрын
Jailyn Jackson you don't know our country. Black people get a LOT of representation in Telenovelas and series from Colombia, but they are a minority of not more than 15% of the population. Somehow you will always complain. The only circle where blacks do not get enough representation is in politics, but that is because we have been governed by the same eight families. They are the only privileged ones. Being white or Mestizo hasn't helped those displaced peasants who escaped from the armed conflict and now live in her precarious conditions in the city. When you go to a poor neighbourhood in Colombia, you will see all colours. We are not divided by race like in your country, where even people speak different for having a different 'race'.

@jailynjackson5366 6 жыл бұрын
Germain Martel Typical dumbass response. "You're not from my country, so therefore you don't know about my country" lmao. Your logic is shit. I'm not even particularly talking about Columbia. You brought up Columbia. Latin America, South America, Caribbean etc have worse issues as far as colorism, and lack of black representation than America does, but somehow the people from there, who aren't Black or is light skinned try to deny it, but there has been evidence proving otherwise (by your own people as well) and Latinos complaining about it. We know about y'all. People like you are so ignorant about your own hometown's. How tf are you trying to imply that black people have it better than whites and Mestizo's (which isn't a race dumbass) cause of them being on TV, like okay... So what? I also never said that Columbia was segregated.
@jailynjackson5366

I have gospel choir performing a song by Kirk Franklin that is heavily Salsa inspired and sabor latino will have a few couples dance while we sing. I’m super excited for it. Sabor Latino also our together an “undocumented stories” lunchtime discussion in which people shared stories of their life as an immigrant documented and undocumented before and after DACA. We also passed out flyers on how to stay safe from harassment and how to contact our state senators. I speak Spanish and I’ve been volunteering as an interpreter in lots of places and one day I want to teach a Sunday school class in Spanish if I have the time. I find it sooooooo weird that in the U.S you seem to have that "check your race"-thing on every paper. I get it's for statistics & stuff, but eh... In my country it is straight up illegal to ask a persons race, even in any administrative concept, just because some day someone might misuse the data. It makes certain things harder, like not having a data base about people who might be socially deprived because of their ethnicity, but there are other means to make sure that indigenous people and other minorities share equal rights with the majority of the population. Like... You think it doesn't make institutional racism easier to have someone's ethnicity out like that? I don't get it.

Colorism and racism are two different things because people of the same race can participate in colorism. Which is giving more priveledges to lighter skinned people. People should feel beautiful in their own skin and the black is beautiful movement is something I fully support. It's not enough for black people to feel beautiful, the whole world must acknowledge their beauty is valid and confront racism and colorism. It's also super horrible to think a person is less human because their skin is darker. Yeah I read the comments section. Damn, some of you have issues deeply connected to colorism and colonialism.

@@sushilovermf LOL that's such a sweet story, thank you for sharing. I used to work in a restaurant where many of the workers in the back could barely speak English and mostly just spoke Spanish, most of them were from El Salvador, I miss them a lot, very kind, hardworking, and honest people. My family are immigrants too and many of us look racially white (though ethnically and culturally we are not white, very far from anglo-americans), yet we still get the racist treatment from the anglo-speaking white americans. They really hate anyone non-northwestern european, non-anglo, but they especially hate the part of the world my people come from.

Would you consider Portuguese as Latina? Because I am mostly Portuguese (from Lisbon Portugal) (My Mom was born there but came to American) and I have always identify myself as a Latina because my tiá identifies as a Latina too.

What I have been taught is your Latino if your from Latin America. Portugal and Spain are considered European countries not Latino countries. So people from Spain and Portugal are considered Europeans. People from Brazil who speak Portuguese are considered Latinos because Brazil is in Latin America. Now the word Hispanic are for people who speak Spanish. All I can say is all these terms are very confusing. I am Mexican American and I when I was younger these to terms would confused me because people would use them around me but would not explain to me the difference until I learned it from a video. PS: I love Seventeen too!
