There was a gringo at my work that would just walk up to me and say " enchiladas!". When I asked him why, he said told me it was because of my Spanish accent. So I waited till the next time he said it and responded very enthusiastically "hamburgers!", which very effectively helped him realize the absurdity the enchilada thing. Some people just forget to think before talking.

Frrrr. I always see the fucking "spicy latinas" on TV and I feel like I'm not curvy or feisty enough to be desirable and shit. A lot of other latinas have a heart attack when they hear me speaking Spanish because I'm on the lighter side and people always tell me I look younger and act too nice. The only thing I have that really fits the stereotype is being really loud and talkative. But that depends on who I'm around

exactly and in the show jane is Venezuela and i’ve never seen a Venezuelan family on tv before. Usually it’s a Mexican family. Even if the actors aren’t Venezuelan, it is still nice seeing more Latin American countries being represented. I think the show represents a lot of what latinas, latinos, or latinx can relate to.

@@kpopxloves3837 I'm venezuelan, I can't say I really care about the American Jane the Virgin. Plus there's not really nothing venezuelan about her, a lot of her cultural references are either Mexican or broadly latín American... Maybe I'm just being picky... But I'm an inmigrant, so I'm already kind of an outsider and gave up on trying to relate to American Latinos. The fact that they claim that their culture is so much like mine yet they are so obviously foreign just makes me feel like an outsider even more and increase the sense of nostalgia

A group of Latinas that always get misrepresented are the Afro-Latinas. A lot of Spanish and English media when then want to cast Latinas they always cast the ones that look like Sophia Vegara or Jennifer Lopez. Never the dark skinned Latinas. You turn on Univision or Telemundo and it looks more like an American tv channel than a Latin t.v. channel. Currently the only major t.v. show with an Afro-Latina in it is Love and Hip-hop Miami and her name is Amara La Negra. I hope that I'm the near future both Spanish and English media start to change and start showing a wider variety of Latinas and Latinos.

I am Mexican-American, I used to work at a Mexican panaderia and once this pig told me, "y cuando me vas a dar tu pastelito?" In the most vulgar and nasty manner. I litteraly just said "que?" And he had the nerve to say it again, I was so super offended but I was working and I'm a very polite person and we were the only people in the store because my boss had gone home already. What if I had put him in his place like I should have and he attacked me? I was alone! Luckily another guy walked in and they actually knew each other so the pig immediately stopped acting like a perv. Thank god I actually never saw him again.

OH MY GOD THIS HIT HOME HARD!! I feel like I should start this with the fact that I am 17 and men do not care AT ALL and they always act like I'm some feisty sex toy and throw awful pick up lines about the fact that I'm Latina. At work once (I'm a cashier) a male customer overheard me speaking Spanish and when he came up to the register was like "so you speaking Spanish to me today?" Already annoyed I just said "I speak Spanish everyday" he asks if I'll be speaking Spanish to him and I was like "uh not unless you want me to but something tells me you don't speak Spanish" he responds with "nah you can't speak Spanish to me unless you're my girlfriend". I was SO PISSED!! Who was he to think he could dictate how I speak and put down my language, culture and me down like that. I was so upset I wished I would've told him off, reminded him I will speak however I damn well please, and sent him to Hell but I just told him I'm 17 and to be bitter wouldn't let him get cigarettes because I needed to see an ID (even though I could tell he was legal lol). Pendejo :/

I think some of the view of Latinas as "spicy" also comes from the archetypal matriarchal role Latinas play in the family dynamic compared to their Western, gringa counterparts. Generally, it feels like mothers and abuelas take a more authoritative or partnered role in families than a purely submissive one in traditional Western cultures. For example, my abuelita and my Tías are way less likely to hold their objections back when speaking to men than many older white women I know are. I can see that resulting in someone calling their demeanor or character spicy, and not necessarily being meant to address sexuality.

Callimo exactly it is the same thing as stereotyping someone by their hair color like "Blondes have more fun", "Redheads have tempers", "Brunettes are boring" or my favorite "if you dye your hair or shave it, you must be some crazy SJW. " Fetishizing someone based upon their ethnicity is the same thing as stereotyping them or as in the blonde example fetishizing someone based on hair color. It is wrong and both are dehumanizing.

I feel uncomfortable wearing tight fitting clothing due to the fear of looking unintentionally sexy.. I can’t help exuding confidence and sass. As Latinas I think we value our sexual assertiveness- spiciness, and in my opinion that is what makes us attractive and enticing. That being said, being stereotyped for this attribute is disheartening because we have so much more to offer.

I was so pissed this one time I was walking to my car from my apartment and a construction worker that was up in some balcony working shouted to me as I walked to my car " Ayy mami, que rica!" I looked up at him and just said "tengame respeto por favor!". I KNOW for a fact that if it was a white woman walking to her car he wouldn't DARE say anything. It pisses me off because I have worked so hard for my education and accomplishments and to be spoken to like that made me feel like some piece of meat. Ugh!

Having kids with a Puerto Rican man, I realized how WEIRD it is when our kids go to call him Papí and yet it's used in a sexual way... Even though other Spanish speaking people do it A LOT (at least in NY the Puerto Ricans and Dominican people do) themselves, even after being somewhat immersed in American-Puerto Rican culture and learning Spanish, I find it irksome so I think it's a personal choice. I don't see wanting your daughters calling you the same name someone screams in bed, but it actually meaning "Daddy." I hate when white girls call their men "Daddy," and have always hated it but since I wasn't Latin or Hispanic I didn't notice how weird the "Papí" thing was :/ Now I would only say that in the context of roles in the house, like "come here Papí/Daddy/Dad" as a *designation* when calling my kid's Dad because he is their Dad, so we are all saying the same thing.

And physically mid part of their upper body means just upper portion of stomach and exactly below breast is so wide and big compared to body. Love that. And they are very brave too mostly. And being the man i can say when we see latina, not all but most we unconsciously knew that damn this lady can make our every wild fantasy come true IF she will be in relationship with me. I hear you. Back in high school I wrote a one act play for a theatre class. I wrote myself as the Latina mother and as me and my buddy were rehearsing, my teacher said the act was funny but also had depth, which is great. His only critique was that I had to be louder. So I said cool, project more. And he said no, be louder and angrier...LIKE SOFIA VERGARA. I love that woman but now everyone thinks that's how we have to sound. I'm Peruvian, my accent isn't the same as hers, nor are we as "fiery" like that all the time. It really hurt that someone I looked up to would say something so ridiculous.

Yes, call that shit out! This stereotype is so pervasive and ingrained into our perception of Latina identity that I don’t doubt we have all been exposed to it.o grew up being the only Hispanic/Latina in my school until high school. So the only reference I had for Hispanic women outside my family were the women from Univision. Have you ever seen how the women are dressed? I’m not criticizing them, I understand sex sells and they do what they have to do in order to move ahead in their careers. More power to them! Recently there was a video where American men were commenting on those women, saying things like Latino’s are so lucky, or how those were the women you fucked, but never took home to mom, etc. I know that example has to do more with the portrayal with women in media as a whole, but no one can say that it isn’t more pervasive in the latin community.

I think that latinas in the entertainment industry are responsible for the image they project in say, movies, tv shows, etc. This actually goes for everyone. No job is so important that we have to leave our values behind and represent something we disagree with. So the responsibility is shared.

Here abroad I haven't heard any bad cat calling, just nice compliments on my hair or people absolutely confused of where I come from. In the end we're human beings, not an etnicity or a skin tone and people needs to see through this but also, We're latinas and we got this.
