THE RACE

Күн бұрын

Twelve months ago, Mercedes abandoned its Formula 1 car concept with a major upgrade package introduced at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Out went the infamous zero-sidepods in favour of a more conventional approach. Yet one year on, it’s still struggling. That’s because in fixing its old problems, it has created some new ones that need to be tackled.
That’s why not only is it not close to winning races, but it’s also being thrashed by one of its customer teams.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff calls McLaren’s turnaround over the past year - using the same engine - “a fantastic recovery story”, transforming it from also-ran to podium regular and grand prix winner.
So what of Wolff’s team’s rather less meteoric recovery story? And if McLaren has turned things around so spectacularly, why hasn’t Mercedes?
00:00 An underwhelming 12 months
02:25 Upgrade progress
04:42 Slow corner struggles
05:56 No "zig-zagging"
06:56 Onward to 2026

It’s crazy to think about it, but if Merc ditched the zero pod last year and created this W15 concept last year instead, they could’ve possibly been more competitive and fighting for a victory… am I missing something on that?
@TassieLorenzo
@TassieLorenzo 23 күн бұрын
You're not missing anything, they thought the W13 had potential so they tweaked it in to the W14 instead of changing course. TBH I think the W13 did have potential and dismissing Elliot was totally wrong. The unique W13 has still been Mercedes' only race winning car of this era of regulations.

Mercedes is 2 years behind actually. RB has been refining their concept since 2022. Mclaren since 2023 and Ferrari since mid 2023. So Mercedes is two full years behind RB, one year behind McLaren and around 6 months behind Ferrari. And between all of them the thing that sets them apart is tires. On pace they are not that far off each other. The problem is how they treat the tires on the beginning of the lap for qualifying (how fast they are in the window and keep them there, plus how well they preserve the tires during a fast lap). And also how they treat the tires on long runs. Mercedes loses a lot of pace mostly because they slide too much, which destroys the tires on the long run. Which makes them have to be conservative on the beginning of the stints. McLaren and Ferrari are better than Mercedes on this and RB is track dependant as we can see lately, they are stuggling with front grip because they need to balance the car to have overall tire life, so they have to lose something to maintain a certain pace on tracks they are not so good.
@stevenst6337
@stevenst6337 23 күн бұрын
McLaren and Ferarri are literally within a tenth of a second on some tracks and will be even faster then Redbull on other tracks. Miami, Imola, and Monaco Redbull wasn’t fastest in any of them.

I think many people didn't realize that RB19, the so called one of the most dominating car in F1 will fighting for 3rd to 5th this season with Mercedes and Aston Martin under Max hand. Perez will definitely out of contention. Of course RB also make progress with RB20, but it's actually pretty amazing that many teams has managed to gain so much in just 1 year without any significant technical regulation change.

W15 is the competitor to the rb19, not the rb20. Mercedes needs to think ahead on this one. Hell the rb20 takes cues from the w14 cannons. I don’t think the “no side pods” concept was wrong considering the w13 was faster when Antonelli test drove it awhile back. Something is off during race weekends or Mercedes is missing a vital component.

They simply do not understand the car. Theres no correlation between their figures of data. The team was clearly very unprepared for the transition to ground effect cars, and the personnel they have clearly cant mend that gap. There are definitely valid reasons for all this happening, but its not okay. I think they've accepted they're not going to fight for anything till the new regs. With that in mind, they absolutely need to do everything possible to bring in all the right people to make sure 2026 is competitive. I think that's the deadline. Changes will need to be made if they cant build a competitive, race winning car by then.

I really hope that Mercs get it together for next year. Ferrari looks like they will be a contender next year car wise, ss does McLaren. Red Bull will still be at the top. So with that be said,I would love to see not just the constructors championship, but which pair of drivers will the best season next year. If alll cars are within a tenth or 2 from each other, what order would you put the pair of drivers( against each other and the field)? My order would be Charles/Lewis Oscar/Lando Max/Checo Russell/Kimi Not that I think that’s how the standings will play out, but as far as how they fair against each other(meaning one driver p1 other p10 scenario, not competitive against each other or the field) Then as a duo against the field(drivers finishing p1-p2, obviously competitive towards each other and bested the field). Max will most likely kill Checo, along with Checo’s bad performances would bring them down as a duo also. Where as least say Lewis and Charles, if not fighting for wins then 2-3rd, obviously competition towards each other and could beat the field. Same could be said for Oscar and Lando. Russell and Kimi I feel even if Mercs get back to form, would be last as a duo. I don’t see Russell changing his ways, will care more about beating his teammate then help the team.

So compare the Merc's overall performance vs the field at a similar point in the season last time to now would be fairer. I don't know what your data would show, but I'd bet it paints a bit of a different picture. Merc's have been progressing pretty well really, gone from being the 6th? 7th? best car and maybe even worse than that with how badly it porpoised, though with more flattering results for having two really good drivers into a car actually approaching the lead group in this short window from the regulation change - look how long it took to start getting that close for any team in the Merc dominance era, the pack is actually catching RB pretty quickly this time, with Merc being one of the faster improvers after a really terrible start, just not the best... Mclaren is rather unusual to the point its virtually unprecedented to find so much performance so quickly...

Either there data or their ability to interpret their data is flawed. They will have gone with zero side pods because the data said that was fastest and either it wasn’t or they were incapable of applying it. Merc are in such a bad place because that’s such a fundamental flaw to have for a top team. Similar to Aston and not being able to update a car mid season. Even if their engine in 2026 is as clear of the field as 2014, I don’t think they’d win the title

McLaren, Aston Martin, Williams and Mercedes have proven the engine or PU is not at issue. But both Williams and Mercedes have clearly shown that their grasp of downforce F1 cars is poor. With Mercedes have the least reason to be so bad as it is a works team able to spend to the limit the cost cap permits.

It’s so odd , but looking at the highlights of the past years . the car for 2022 (No Side Pod) was not so bad looking at this current variation of the car. I think they should go back to it . I believe Mercedes got nervous and impatient and scrapped the idea, but Allison was on to something

For everyone ssying James designed the Schumacher winning Ferrari’s. He did NOT design them. They were designed by Rory Byrne, as were the championship winning benettons. Rory designs were very muchba match for Newey. James Allison was head of design of the 2005 and 2014 Ferrari’s, and they were shit!

Mercedes will return to winning but it won't be with Russell as he is not fast enough. In my opinion he is lacking that killer instinct which a needed in this sector. Also their main sponsors are not happy with the current drivers line up when Lewis leaves.

By the end of 2022 they were faster than Ferrari and Remember George won Brazil in 2022. I believe if the rules for the floor changes didn't happen in 2023 then Mercedes would have been much closer to red bull. But by loosing the ability seal the floor mechanicaly (which they lobbied for) they shot themselves in the foot.

So the "slower you go the less the car wants to turn", i.e. the slower it is the more the car understeers. That doesn't make sense and I think Lewis might be lying or didn't tell us the whole picture. Slow speed: mechanical grip plus little to no aero grip, higher yaw High speed: same mechanical grip, plus a lot of aero grip, less yaw So Lewis is basically saying that the mechanical balance of the car is to understeer, but the aero balance is oversteer and the faster you go, the more relative load goes to the front axle compared to the rear. That doesn't make sense since you need to turn more in slower corners (faster yaw) than fast corners and I don't think anyone in the history of racing does that. The only way that is possible is that the slightly high yaw in slow corners just suddenly ruin the aero completely, which also means that the car would be garbage in crosswind, which evidently is not true (it also means the aero concept has to be completely garbage if it can't handle even slight yaw). Idk what's going on, but either Merc is lying, or the setup concept is really completely garbage.
@NicholasLatipi
@NicholasLatipi 23 күн бұрын
maybe the car is rear heavy in the high speed turn it wanted to go ahead of the front (oversteer) in the low speed turn it refuses to be swing sideways and just want push the front forward (understeer) Stiff suspension could also means weight distribution isn't as dynamic during breaking so the weight wont shift forward (dive) and front grip won't be as strong.
@NiSE_Rafter
@NiSE_Rafter 23 күн бұрын
Aero probably isn't efficient at low speeds so not enough front end grip leading to understeer.
