I know this vid is more about Jaco, but I was just as enthralled by Joe Zawinul's genius. One of the few musicians who were not intimidated playing with Miles Davis. In an interview in the early days of Weather Report, Joe was asked how it felt to play with Miles; Joe's answer was "Why don't you ask him how it felt to play with me"? No brag, just fact; Joe was every bit Miles' equal!

A friend of mine and I saw Weather Report every night that they played at the Whiskey A Go Go. We stood at the stage, looking up in awe. After their last set, Joe bent down and asked us if we would like to go back stage since we had been there every night. I'll never forget the conversations we heard. "What is music" is what was talked about. Many of the answers were really "out there". What an amazing band!❤❤❤😊😊😊

Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter are the integral members of Weather Report and I bought every single album that the group released starting with Miroslav Vitous and Eric Gravatt on bass and drums but Heavy Weather is my favorite. In the 70’s I copied it on an 8 track (it was just vinyl and 8 track back then) and drove my wife (she was my girlfriend at the time) crazy playing it in my car.

This is a big part of why the 70s were the greatest decade for music. We had jazz, funk, jazz fusion, prog, psychedelic, medieval-classical, hard rock, Gaelic and Welsh rock, and so many shades of "experimental" that didn't fit into any category at all. This was the decade of Zappa, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Weather Report, Stanley Clarke, Jean Luc Ponty and Parliament. Etc. Sure, the 60s were fun, and lots of great music has been made after 1980, but there was never a decade for music like the 70s. Where's my TARDIS?

I wonder when in 1977 this was taped. I saw them in Toronto in 77, I think it was May or June. There was no Badrena, and I’ve read since that he was dismissed from the band. But almost every album and performance featured a percussionist, except 8:30, which I believe is a document of this tour. And yes, they were phenomenal in Toronto…did I mention I was 16 years old, in the second row at Convocation Hall.

Such a cool ending. Feels like they are going to play the whole head again but then it just stops. Sounds like a mistake for a second? Still awesome.

This broadcast brought jazz fusion to a whole new (and surprised) and younger audience. Would not be surprised if sales of Heavy Weather shot up as a result.

The camera should have been on Jaco during that legendary bass riff.

Wonderful, that ending though! Zawinul had to re-clap the ending after a few of the lads overshoot.

I realize you either like a piece of music or you don't, and understanding of music and music theory adds a great deal, being a musician adding even more--I am not...but how on earth can anyone really paying attention not be positively impacted in some way by music performed by this incredibly talented and inspired group? And why are we arguing about who's a genius and who among us could stand with any of them? Amazing creation and performance--go ahead and talk if you want, but I suggest focus on enjoyment of what's good about this.
