“The killer of wool is the wind.” The statement that convinced me to choose this over the Anorak. Thanks. Great point!! Make the wool thick enough, and weave the wool tight enough and you actually overcome its weakness!!!

I have the vest and Anorak. I believe it's supposed to be U.S. sourced merino wool. I've found that a cold breeze still passes through but not to the extent of the Lester River Boreal Anorak (Army Blanket) I have one. The best way around that is an outer shell, Goretex, Nylon, Waxed Canvas, Oil Skin, etc.

I live in northern California, between high desert and forest. I put on what I thought was a padded rain jacket after a heavy snow storm and was sweating in no time. Turns out its one of those extreme northern sea vessel jackets. Two other thick wool item I ended up with is a peacoat (needs animal hair removed) and wool navy pants. Haven't tried to use them in winter yet.

I'm in Northwest Indiana (right on Lake Michigan) and it gets pretty darn cold. I have the Boreal Shirt like you have and with the right base layers, and wind proofing, I'm good to around 0 to +10 degrees. If the mini ice age comes around, I'll definitely consider this company or a Filson. Thanks for bringing this company and product to our attention.

Absolutely way over my budget, but none the less, it’s nice to know of these items, I’ve went cheap all my life so far and now wish I would have treated myself to a good set of gear starting out, that will last a life time , so if you can, purchase either this or another of equal quality and save yourself the misery of cheap stuffs I have

Awesome video and thanx for showing us these products! Wool is pricey but when you want to be warm and dry it’s one of the best natural materials. $350-400 I can do but $800 is a lil out of my reach due to my 4children.Really nice coat! Hey Matt any new knife designs that your thinking of doing? I’ve been saving up for your Sospes and I’m finally there ! Can’t wait to receive it!

Sorry for slow reply, Photoboy! We love to be compared to King of the Mountain. Before I founded WeatherWool, I was their biggest distributor. With WeatherWool, we are doing all the things I kept telling KOM they should do to improve their product! And we do a bunch of things we've learned since then, too. Thanks and All the Best! --- Ralph

Although I can't afford such expensive an item,I really enjoy watching and learning about it. What I can say is that domestic products(as well as Canadian made)are worth the price. For instance, although Levi's made in Poland,Morocco or Mexico are supposedly made under the same Levi's specs,is there any comparison between those and the "old"domestic ones?NO WAY! So,I really wish I could afford that product no matter the price. From time to time it's nice to see reviewing exceptional products like that.

That jacket + a gortex outer shell of some type would be an awesome first line of defense against cold windy wet weather. I grew up in northern Vermont and had a wool suit. At -20f it was absolutely the warmest thing I ever wore as a kid. So warm in fact I couldn't wait to get out of it. Back then the feet, hands were what always got cold first. Insulated winter boots weren't popular yet.

Thanks for the info! Haven't been to Alaska yet but have lived in the Rockies (Jackson Hole Wyoming) and been on many family trips ice fishing in Northern Minnesota and being a truck driver have been through many weather scenarios in every state in the lower 48.

Thick woven wool pants. No zipper just buttons with buttons for suspenders. The coat or jacket was a button down collared jacket with a hood that was removable. Everything was done and held together with large buttons. The suit I wore was to cover dress clothes like for going to church or school events. I outgrew it pretty quickly but remember how warm it was on those cold Vermont winters.

Awesome review. Thank you for being upfront about the cost. I agree that items like this are needed to be reviewed, so that someone knows what to expect before they sink a very nice AR-15 amount of money into a coat. But according to indexmundi, raw wool jumped from $12 to $15 per kilogram over the last year. Hardly a doubling in cost.

And as with most things the labor is where most of the cost is, not the material. So either the company weaving the wool into sheet goods has doubled their labor or the people sewing it into jackets has.

WeatherWool I appreciate you taking the time to respond. That information clears up a lot concerns. I understand that even during the early 20th century, couples could sink a month or two worth of income into purchasing good woolen blankets and coats.

Will got one of our original All-Around Jackets on clearance ... maybe he forgot that because he had it for quite a while before he made the video!! BTW ... WeatherWool is ALWAYS pure-American ... we pay 0 attention to non-American wool or components. I have no idea what kind of wool indexmundi is quoting ... we buy the very best American wool -- ideal for our purposes -- and it costs less than $15/kg (although of course we purchase by the pound in the USA!). He's right about it not being for everybody but for the right application this kind of thing is exactly what the doctor ordered. I was a mountaineer for years. Winter climbing etc. I live in Alaska now. Great gear is a requirement and it has to be reliable. It's not just a comfort luxury item but at some point inferior gear impacts the safety factor.

Will I for one appreciate this video, even tho I have no need of a jacket this capable, simply because its items like this that people should want reviewed. You brought an item that will most likely be unknown to most of the outdoor youtube community that is an extremely expensive piece of gear and gave us your experience with it. Its items like this that really need to be reviewed so that people can get an idea of what they will receive for $800-850. Anyone who comes along on this video or any other complaining about the cost of the item simply has nothing better to do with their time.

I am sure the Gateses of the world would go for such expensive coat. I am a working stiff so I will take Woolrich or Filson everytime. Last I looked they were American companies too. I shy away from Yuppy prices on basic clothing. You might be much wealthier than I am so you are welcome to it. Doug

WeatherWool Ralph, thank you for your comment. Naturally Filson has a larger purchasing base hence an opportunity to lower costs. Viewers here have presented their honest opinions and perhaps Bushcrafter's aren't considered part of your market or you are hoping they will just find the funds. Either way the comments from this good review has provided you some input on your product. No harm intended. Just honest opinions. Thank you.

Arguably it's the best out there, but the price isn't for everyone. An old wool army sweater or Icelandic sweater with a shell over it will keep you warm. But wool does rule.

For the billionaire bushcrafter who has everything... jeez!!! Wool is not an endangered species material. It’s a cheaply renewable resource. Mills and companies that spin the wool into awesome coats and anoraks do up that cost, but over $1000 for a wool jacket? Sure seems a bit predatory to me.
