There's always sticker-shock strokes in a Weatherwool video. But it's as good as wool can get, and that costs.

Merino wool is amazing stuff. I wear only merino wool socks now and it's been life changing, also spent 75 on a t shirt, yes a t shirt made of merino wool that spent 3 days hiking through the grand canyon on my back and had no odor after 72 hours of use in 100+ temps

Well I am really glad you did the vid as its always good to see the whole spectrum of stuff. For me there are only a very few advantages of these kind of boreal type clothing. In the snow it's awesome, breathes super well stops you sweating which is a life saver. Standing around in a forest like bushcraft it's heavy tough and keeps you warm. Also hunting and wildlife as its super quiet and stealthy. Its really bad in heavy rain and damp conditions, very difficult to clean well and super heavy weight wise. The price I don't care as long as it's good value. If it made in the USA hand sewn and finished with the best fabrics then that price is about right. But If its mass produced off shore then the margin is way to high. Thanks for doing the vid.

Just ordered one, but there all sold out so it will take awhile. So far impressed with the customer service. Quick response and personal attention from the owners the day after I ordered it. Can't wait to get it. I've got tons of FIlson wool stuff and it's nice. However, their wool anorak sold out it one day. This one is two hundred dollars more, but I want one!

I live in the mountains very near the Canadian border and this WeatherWool Anorak sounds just like what I need. When you live where you could freeze to death if you have a mishap in the woods and don’t have proper clothing you value what you wear. This socialist attitude that everybody should be able to afford everything that has invaded our land doesn’t just exist with the liberals-it’s in the bushcraft community also. You and Will do a great job and as far as I’m concerned there’s no need for you to apologize because something costs more than 15¢. Keep up the great work!

Hi Chris... Love your videos and have learned so much from them. I have really enjoyed the many products that you have reviewed and am impressed that they have generally been high value and not necessarily high priced products. Weatherwool seems a bit over the top IMHO. There are some really fantastic wool anoraks that would give their anoraks a real run for the money. The first one is the wool anorak by Swandri - a New Zealand company. I have used this one most of the winter long with out a moment of self doubt in my decision to do so. The pros of the anorak (aside from it's absolute quality), are: 1. The coverage of this anorak is fantastic...it covers and protects almost to my knees. This keeps my legs warm and working! 2. The cut of the anorak allows for significant layering. I have used this as the outer layer in near zero degree weather with a blistering wind and have not suffered the cold. The cut is FULL and permits full use of my arms even though I have 3 layers on beneath the anorak and am using a backpack. 3. The anorak with shipping from NZ is about $200.00 cheaper than Weatherwool. The cons to the Swandri is that it is spartan. It needs outside pockets, a pouch or something that can be used to store items like my compass, small knife, cellphone etc without my having to take my pack off. This shortcoming is easily rectified by adding my own custom touches which I have done and am satisfied with the results. There are two more products an anorak and bushshirt which have quickly grown to be my favorites and are from ASBELL WOOL COMPANY @asbellwool.com. I have both the Anorak and the Pathfinder products and with each use I find tremendous satisfaction with both products! There is little if anything I would change. I have the lighter weight wool called the, "Extra Heavy Weight" vs. the heavier weight called, "Blanket Wight" . Both of these products are thoughtfully designed and impeccably crafted of the BEST wool! I have no idea the treatment or the source of this wool but it is just about wind proof and is quite water repellant! Theresa Asbell is the contact person and her customer service is perfection. The pros to these products are: 1. Quality wool!!! 2. Thoughtful design 3. Quality construction!! 4. Superior customer service! 5. Fantastic wind/rain resistance. 6. PRICE-PRICE-PRICE!!!! VALUE VALUE VALUE! My anorak was $108.00!! My Pathfinder bush shirt was $96.95! You simply can't beat that with a stick! The Cons: I didn't find any! As I have said, I really do learn so much from your vids and from the comments which follow the vids. l thought that I could add some value to the discussion with the above comments. Thanks for all you do!

Hello, Kathleen Veitch! --- No doubt there are plenty of cheaper alternatives to WeatherWool! We founded our company because we had not encountered any other outerwear that came close to satisfying our specs. We make the best we can figure out, always pure American, and never cut corners. We'll gladly participate in a head-to-head performance test against any other outerwear ... and we might be the only maker that offers No-Risk Field Testing. I am a big fan of Fred Asbell as an outdoor writer, and have learned a lot from him. His prices are amazingly low. The wool itself in our Anorak costs us more than the price of the Asbell Anorak.

I have a Woolrich hunting jacket & pants that I paid a lot of money for. It's very high quality tightly woven wool but it didn't always keep me warm and dry unless I wore a lot of layers underneath. I started using gortex fleece clothing and I swear by it. The nice thing about gortex is it helps block the wind and you can kneel or sit on wet surfaces. Wool will retain some heat when wet but it takes a long time to dry out. If your under clothing gets wet - you will eventually experience hypothermia.

Goose down under garments are the best for warmth at least down to 0 F when your camping out. I got a pair at least 10 yrs ago from Cabela's or Gander Mtn. for a reasonable price. you slip them on and the cold goes away. You have to wash them in a machine without the center spin attachment or commercial washer and then put them in the dryer with a set of dryer rings that bounce against the garments to fluff them back into shape.

@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 6 жыл бұрын
I like that the LR is roomier, and the organizational pockets in the front. But the difference in the wool is clearly noticable. WeatherWool is warmer. That being said, I still like my Lester River. Just needs some extra layers. I've done a video where I combine it with the Snugpak poncho liner and it's a solid winter performer. The Weatherwool just seems to be comfortable in a wide range of temps.
@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 6 жыл бұрын
Hi --- It's Ralph from WeatherWool. For us, versatility is the thing we design for more than anything else. We want you to be comfortable with most anything that comes your way. AND ... we want you to be wearing WeatherWool when the unexpected happens. I mean, if you know it is going to be COLD when you leave the house, you will be dressed for it. But if you go out on a bluebird day, bust up your ankle 10 miles from the truck and then the weather turns, that's when you need a garment that is comfortable in the warm AND saves your bacon when things get unexpectedly nasty. So we try to make garments that you'll just plain want to wear all the time because it is a pleasure to wear them. Thanks!

Wow, that's even pricier than my Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser, not by much, but I saved for years for that thing. It does have a hood though. That's the one thing the Cruiser doesn't have that I really wish it did. (One of these days I'll get around to making a button-on hood for it.) High quality wool clothing is expensive. It just is. There's no way around that, but, if you take care of it, it lasts for a very long time, and it's really warm.

Somewhere on this thread I think I wrote that I had never spoken with Chris. But actually, I was on the phone with Will a couple days ago and he reminded me that on a previous call, Will had handed the phone to Chris and we did speak briefly. I still don't remember that (sorry, Chris! ... my memory fails more and more lately and it is frustrating!!) call but from what Will relayed, I told Chris to test the Anorak for a while and then we'd circle back and figure out what to do next. Soooooo ... time to speak with Chris (again!) --- HUGE THANKS Chris and Will for making this video and giving WeatherWool a test. We are beginning to do videos ourselves and now that we are getting our feet wet in this area we are more impressed than ever by people who can put together a quality KZfaq presentation and build a following. And there are very few in the league of PreparedMind101. So, WOW ... GREAT to be here!!! --- Also, thanks to everyone who viewed the video! All the Best! --- Ralph from WeatherWool

Hi Molon Labe ... We appreciate very much the sentiment expressed in your handle. Yep, there are lots of clothes out there and so many considerations that go into a final decision! Here are some ways WeatherWool is different from the others with which I am familiar: we are always pure American; we always make the best we can figure out; we are All-Purpose outerwear ... worn by Special Forces in Afghanistan, city folks going out to clubs, all sorts of outdoor hobbyists and professionals and even people going to church. And I'm not sure there are other companies offering No-Risk Field Testing. THANKS MUCH and Good Luck sorting through all the choices! --- Ralph

@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 6 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, we do not use any liners because nothing performs as well as wool. So any liners detract from overall performance. @WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff. No itch ... that's one reason why it is expensive. Outerwear is normally itchy because it is very expensive to make woolens that are both tough and comfortable. But if a jacket is not comfortable, people don't want to wear it. And if you don't wear it, what good is it? We are making the garments that people WANT to wear ... Yes, we make 3X. Same price. 30° in Alaska is beach weather it's 16 here right now would you still be wearing just that and a t-shirt?
@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe. It is VERY difficult to predict what will work for any individual person. But maybe you, as an Alaskan, would be wearing just a T-Shirt underneath ... seriously ... for you, 30F/-1C is mild weather, so, without a lot of wind making things feel colder, you might well be fine wearing just a T-Shirt under our Anorak. Also, Chris is in Ohio, where, usually it is pretty humid, which of course makes the cold feel colder. I was showing WeatherWool at Eielson Air Force Base and at Fort Wainwright a couple of years ago. Both bases are near Fairbanks and the temp was around -10F/-23C. I wore one wool ultra-light baselayer plus our ShirtJac (same warmth as the Anorak, but no Hood) both indoors and out, no problem. If I was going to be outside for any length of time, I would have worn more. But for 10 or 15 minutes, walking from one place to another or catching a smoke, that minimal outfit, which was also perfectly comfortable indoors, was fine. Versatility is a huge part of what WeatherWool is about. THANK YOU --- Ralph

It knocks me out how much variability there is between people. And actually, there is even big variability for the same person. The coldest winter of my life was back when I was "in-shape" ... very little body fat. But in my 30s I plumped up and hardly noticed the cold ... It depends if you are tired ... whether you have some good food under your belt ... how long it has been since soap and water (the coldest time is straight out of the shower, with all the oil removed from your skin!) and it goes on and on. People think sometimes I am being a wise-guy when I start going into all this but I don't want to mislead anyone. The best indicator is what you are already used to!! THANK YOU! --- Ralph

Great video. Thanks for sharing. The sizing information doesn’t seem to be accurate. I checked with Ralph at weatherwool before buying and he said go with a large. I’m 6’ 200lbs and Large fits perfectly.

The Anorak is fine for room temperature down to well below freezing. People often wear it over just a cotton T-Shirt ... this is fine so long as there is no chance of conditions getting nasty. We recommend NEVER cotton if there is any chance of dealing with serious weather. An ultra-light wool base layer in room temps is comfortable, and then if nasty conditions do happen, you're all in wool and good to go! --- THANKS! --- Ralph

YES ... exactly as you write. People often think wool is to protect against cold. And that is true. But really, wool is made by Nature to keep sheep comfortable, with minimal expenditure of energy, in whatever conditions they might encounter. We are really fortunate in that with wool, we can use it for almost exactly what Nature designed it to do. And sheep can tolerate all sorts of extreme weather. WeatherWool is about versatility, and we try to emphasize that, but many people never get beyond a the strong association between wool with cold weather. Actually, the very best hot-weather clothing is also made of wool. People doing crazy stuff like running and biking across deserts wear ultra-light wool. We love that stuff too, and someday we hope to make some of our own. THANKS AGAIN! --- Ralph

Upper 30's are great, unless you're up north of Seattle (or up north of Portland) and experiencing rain, maybe mixed with snow. You have 2k - 3k feet el. to go, 60 min. to nightfall. Try it. Let me know how that works out for you. Then, please advise. P.S. 60# pack.

Hi Center Mass: Basic Background ... Anyone who is unhappy with WeatherWool after HARD and THOROUGH field-testing is welcome to a full refund. For people with a serious public presence like Will and Chris, we will send garments to them without payment up front. They can take the WeatherWool out and beat it up. If it turns out that WeatherWool is not something they are really happy wearing in preference to whatever else they have, then they send it back. (Nobody sends it back.) If they do want to make WeatherWool part of their standard kit, then we figure out how we will work together. I didn't know Chris was doing this video and actually have never spoken to him ... I have gotten to know Will pretty well tho, and he is one of our Advisors (on our website). It was because of our friendship with Will, and Chris's reputation, that we sent to Will an Anorak for Chris to test. Until I saw this video last night, I didn't really know what Chris thought of the Anorak, although I'm not surprised he is happy with it, given how many other people, including lots of outdoor pros, are wearing WeatherWool by choice. I hope to speak with Chris soon, and we'll then figure out whether he will have an ongoing relationship with WeatherWool. I hope that answers your question, and Thanks for your interest! --- Ralph

I wonder if anyone has compared this to the Loden green anorak from Boreal Mountain Anorak. I can't take the weatherwool guys opinion because it's extremely bias. I understand he's trying to sell his product (and I have no doubt that it's a fantastic product) but I would like to see the two of them compared by a unbiased reviewer.

The Buffalo Special 6 Anorak is wind proof to around 35 MPH and costs a hell of a lot less. Maybe you can do a video on that ? I love mine. I have it 4 years, good investment. The hood was extra, get the hood, very nice.
@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 6 жыл бұрын
If it is windproof to 35 mph, does it breathe? That's always a huge issue for a designer of performance outerwear ... the balance between breathability and wind resistance. We really did not want to make our Fabric tighter ... 15 mph (25 kph) is the sweet spot for us. Never heard of Buffalo Special 6 Anorak but we'd be happy to be compared to it or anything else for general All-Purpose performance! --- Thank You! --- Ralph

There are a few videos on the Buffalo Special 6 here on anti gun You Tube. The material is Pertex with a thick pile lining, so yes it does breath. It also has pit zips, I am sure that helps as well. A side by side comparision sounds like a good idea.
@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Center Mass ... I will try to check out Pertex ... Sorry to be jaded, but I've been hearing windproof/waterproof and breathable so often for so long my eyes glaze over. So far I haven't seen that combination delivered. But it is a very important goal and i can't say Pertex doesn't deliver it because i don't know the product. Yeah direct comparison is something I'd like to do. People are telling me I need to be careful that other companies will set their lawyers on me if I do direct comparison. But I still like the idea. Thanks for the info! --- Ralph
@centermass3454
@centermass3454 6 жыл бұрын
Ralph: Pertex is not waterproof and it is wind resistent to a point. I said 35 MPH, it may be a little less. I just checked their web site, they claim Windproof to 50 MPH. Chris, friend BlackScout Survival did a video some years ago on the BS6 and I bought it based on that video. I do like the clothing videos, I am proof they do sell product. I also have never seen anyone else in person wearing one. I am also a fan of wool, it is a atural fiber and does have its place as well. I think a side by side comparision would be interesting to see.

We have an open neck because people often wear our Anorak in room temperatures. We offer a neck gaiter that works inside the Anorak if needed. W didn't want to close the neck off because we need our garments to be comfortable in both warm and cold temperatures. The versatility increases the chances that people will be wearing WeatherWool when the unexpected happens and they really need protection. --- THANKS --- Ralph
