The danger of getting soaking wet in cold weather is greatly diminished if you wear wool. In this video, the temp is just above freezing. I'm wearing WeatherWool MidWeight Pants, our very first All-Around Jacket, wool socks and wool base layers under the Jacket. Plus leather boots and leather belt. To read more about Wool and Water, please visit our website:
weatherwool.com/pages/wool-an...
Legal Eagles have told me I need to put some kind of a warning here else someone sets their lawyer on us ... I guess that's the world we live in ... So ... here's some fine print ... Please don't get the wrong idea ... Wool is not going to turn a winter dunking into summer on the beach. The point of this video is to show that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". If you do something like the immersion shown here in cotton, or a lot of other materials, you'd be in serious trouble. Being prepared for the dunking made all the difference. If you are going to try this yourself, have friends nearby who can help if you need help. For me, this was really easy. But I've been told that some people might have serious issues from the dunking itself ... the frigid water was kind of shocking ... and from research I've seen, 95% of people who die in cold water don't die from hypothermia ... the "cold-shock gasp" induces panic, and death is caused by heart failure or drowning.
And if you do try a winter immersion yourself, please remember that all wool clothing is not created equal. WeatherWool is designed to handle this kind of situation ... we use 0 cotton ... our Fabric is pure wool (unlike most other 'wool' clothing), and (again unlike other woolens), our garments are almost entirely wool. We do not use 'liner' fabrics around the neck and shoulders, for example, which would have resulted in a wet rag around my neck. Even thread matters in a serious situation. Instead of the typical cotton thread (a real weak link!), we use mil-spec nylon thread that does not absorb water. We use small amounts of nylon in other spots, such as the strips that secure our Slot Buttons. Where backing fabric is needed, such as under the pocket flaps, we use mil-spec wool/nylon blend. Use of anything but wool is absolutely minimized.
We shot this clip at a little place we have in the New Jersey swamps of the Rockaway River. We do a lot of testing and photography for WeatherWool at The Swamp: weatherwool.com/pages/new-jer...

I ordered something from you the other day, something small as a gift. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the wool; If I like it (and I suspect that I will), I'm going to start saving up for one of your flagship products. I know you guys catch a lot of flak for your prices. It is what it is. If you guys are producing heirloom quality garments, then your prices are fair. Just 70 years ago, heirloom quality was the STANDARD and was to be expected in textile goods. In todays grossly fast paced, fashion-obsessed consumer society, people forget what it means to have a coat that lasts your whole life. And again, serious props for showcasing your product by putting it to a no-bullshit demonstration.

EXACTLY! Thank You ... People make some great stuff in our factories ... computers, jet planes ... but our best work is child's play compared to Nature's creations. And Nature created wool to clothe sheep, which just happen to have requirements very very similar to ours. Wool stomps the comp!

Hey guys I wanna add how I wash my wool garments. 1. Fill washer top loading standard washing machine tub with warm water & soap add garments. 2. Lay stick across tub so I do not accidentally close lid. (Do not use agitation,). let it soak few hours. 3. Remove stick flip dial to spin & spin out water. 4. Fill tub back up and go straight to spin repeating enough times until all the soap is rinsed out. 5. Lay flat till nearly dry, & hang when around 90% dry. I don’t care if wool garment says is super wool and is washer & dryer safe, this works and never has let me down, be it a fleece, angora sweater or heavy wool fabric. Super easy.

OMG, next thing I know the dude is up to his neck in the water lol, I didn’t see that part coming. But how were you dry, didn’t the water soak you from underneath the pant cuff, arm cuffs, and basically any opening at all?? I totally get how the clothing could defeat wind & cold, but I don’t understand how the water wouldn’t get UNDER the wool clothing. So I understand that human skin will dry way faster than synthetic clothes (in fact the synthetic clothes won’t dry at all in those snowy conditions), but you said that immediately or within 5 minutes you were dry, I would imagine that your skin would be wet and it would take a little bit of time for it to air dry through the wool.

WOW ... sorry for slow reply. I have to find out if I can get notified of comments. Oh, yeah ... the only time I really felt the cold was when i was submerged and the river was inside my clothes. But as soon as I got out, the water drained away and I guess my skin was damp for a while but the wool somehow makes that OK. I don't understand really how it works. The one thing I can say is ... Wool was MADE BY NATURE TO CLOTHE SHEEP. And Nature is an unbelievably sophisticated designer. THANKS for your interest! --- Ralph

@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 3 жыл бұрын
HI!! --- Thanks for the kind words! You don't need to worry about moths in the woods, that's for sure. It's moth larvae that will eat wool ... the females will lay their eggs on or near food for the larvae and when the larvae hatch, they can damage and even sometimes destroy woolen garments or blankets by eating holes in them. The preventives are pretty well known ... dry-cleaning will kill any eggs or larvae. And so will two or three days in a deep freezer (0F/-18C). You can also use cedar or moth balls. And many people will put their will in vacuum-sealed plastic bags that can't be penetrated by the females or the larvae. Many people are treating their clothes with permethrin to repel ticks. Permethrin kills moth larvae extremely quickly, according to sources I find on the web. I haven't tested this myself tho. THANK YOU! --- Ralph

About the disclaimer: I DO do this. Regularly. Although, I take off the clothes first. A quick dunk in the icy water (near the house and prepared!) actually brings me a rush of heat once I get out. Then I sit and enjoy feeling warm in the snow without clothes, till the rush goes away. NOTHING beats wool. I notice a difference with even a low percentage of nylon or others woven in. Nylon is a good choice for the reasons you mentioned, but My favorite sweater if i know I may get wet much like your video (not on purpose) is 40% possum, 50% sheep and 10% silk and wow, is it the ultimate wool. That is the brushtail possum from AU and NZ, not the opossum you find around here. The only thing in the world better than just pure wool, and it Sheep and camel do dry a bit quicker, but if youre still warm, that can wait till you're home or have a fire. If you can import or try it, please do.
@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard about the possum from AU and NZ ... a buddy of mine traps them for their pelts. But I've never seen the fur, let alone tried a garment made from it!! Interesting that you like to CRANK UP your metabolism with the cold water dunk. I know some people swear by it. I am guessing it's something most people would need to be careful with ... from what I've read, the sudden cold shock can be dangerous. I can only say the water felt very cold and i was quite happy to get out of the river! --- Thanks for checking out the video and for the thoughts! --- Ralph

Ralph, which garments come with arm pit exhaust zippers?
@WeatherWool
@WeatherWool 6 жыл бұрын
The only garment we make with a pit-zip is the SkiJac. Pit-zips are much more important with synthetics than with WeatherWool because our Fabric breathes very well. Of course, there are lots of makers of synthetic garments that claim "windproof, waterproof and breathable". Windproof and waterproof is easy and cheap. But windproof, waterproof and breathable doesn't exist in any practical sense as far as I can tell. So ... the synthetics-garment makers add pit-zips to try to compensate for that. In the case of our Ski-Jac, Chad, the lead designer (career ski-patrol), asked for the pit-zips because his previous favorite ski jackets (synthetic) had them. Nature designed wool partly to manage moisture, and mankind is a long long long way from improving on Nature. There is a lot of info about this on our website. And of course you are welcome to phone me directly anytime --- Ralph --- 973-943-3110. --- THANKS!
