In this video, I am making a bag strap for a clear plastic stadium bag. This is a fantastic pattern for a beginner in tablet weaving!
The pattern I'm using is from Catherine Weaver, www.tabletweavingintheoryandpr.... She kindly gave me permission to use this pattern, which is a variation of the Oseberg band, is double-sided, and does not require any complex card movements--just all forward until it becomes overtwisted, then reverse until it is overtwisted again.
------------------------
The patterns I create or find on Pinterest are pinned to my board here: / weave-along-with-elewy... . I will also post it on my blog.
I've put some fishing swivels on my Amazon storefront which can be found here: www.amazon.com/shop/elewysoff.... I prefer the #3 brass swivels. If you wish to weight those cards rather than use swivels, I recommend about 100 grams of weight per card. Tying them on can be done with square knots, or you can try some fisherman's tricks that you can find here: • How to Tie a Swivel to...
Catherine Weaver's books can be found at www.blurb.com/user/Catheros. In particular, her double face inscriptions book is here: www.blurb.com/b/10482662-tabl....

Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator (TDD):
* jamesba.github.io/tabletweave/
NEW How to use TDD: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmPy6...
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 or 60/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver has recently moved her store from Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors. New web site! www.eowyndewever.com
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Sewing:
* I use 100% linen from Linen-Store.com in the IL019 weight for my tunics. The quality of their linen is very good, their prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast! Use "ILOVELINEN" in the discount code for an additional 7% off!
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingiverse.com/thing:180...)
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

That seems like a really good pattern for a beginner, since you just continuously turn all the cards in the same direction It gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with the other aspects of the process before getting to complicated card turning.

I have a question about threading the cards. i Understand threading the right colour in the tight hole according to the pattern and I understand s threading vs. Z but are their examples where the threads cross each other as they thread through the card? As for example in card 7 where there are three white threads in a, c and d and a blue in b? Thanks for your help
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 Жыл бұрын
The threads "crossing" before they go through the hole will not be impactful. If there is a knot, yes, or if two threads are twisted a couple times and the other two aren't, sure. But usually there isn't any difference in performance.

something I've been wondering, maybe you could answer for me, Good Lady: can you convert a pattern from pickup/handweaving to card/tablet weaving or does that drastically change how it comes out? I've seen that they can both be done on inkle looms, but I see Baltic-style weaving involves picking up pattern threads and I was wondering if you could just create selvages using cards instead of doing it by hand every time. It'd be a lot easier for me, that's for sure.

I think just about any pattern can be created with doubleface tablet weaving.
@stephaniebradfield908

How do you know when there is too much twist? How do you fix it? Do you start turning the cards towards you or do you flip each card so all your Z become S and vice versa and keep going forwards?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 Жыл бұрын
"Too much twist" is up to the weaver's interpretation. If there are some threads that are soft and others that can be played like a guitar string, it's time to change direction. I usually flip the cards because the muscle memory is strong with this one...but whatever is most comfortable to you.

@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 2 жыл бұрын
After weaving a foot or two, you will find the yarns getting over-twisted. To untwist, simply turn the cards in the opposite direction as you weave. The pattern will be *upside down* -- although I think of it as a design element. Continue weaving until the cards are over-twisted in the opposite direction, then resume turning the cards in the original direction.
