I use a surgeon’s knot. Usually when you tie you only take your yarn over once, but with a surgeon’s knot you take your yarn over twice. It stays really well, can be easily tightened if need be, and taken out easily as well.

When I was a Girl Scout,I was taught the square knot ... "over, under" .... I still say it every time I tie one. And I use the exact same knots as you do, in the same places. And the last one IS a square knot.

When I am tying on after winding the warp I use a half square knot. The tension of the warp keeps the knot in place and once the whole warp is secured you can adjust your tension by pulling on the ends of the knot.

Isn't your "mystery" knot a 'larks head' knot? That's what I've always thought it was called.

Only instead of square knot u wrap it 2 times the 1st time
