I have a measuring tape attached to my front beam, I measure every 5 inches then use a straight pin to mark those 5 inches, moving the pin as I go along (on my draft sheet i mark each 5 inches with a slash until i get desired length).

Pinwheel was my first two-shuttle pattern! It's so lovely, I hung up my test sample to decorate my weaving space. I'm threading a shadow weave pattern right now -- I'm nervous but excited! Putting it together really stretched my brain, but I figure even if it doesn't come out as intended, *something* interesting will happen. Thanks for this little overview, it's cool to see the different patterns laid out together like this.

Thank you, so much. However, I have a couple of questions. I have a 4-shaft table loom, do I ignore the extra 2 treadle instructions? Which 2? Or do I just follow the instructions for all 6 treadles? Thank you again your videos are a huge help!
@ActonCreative8 күн бұрын
@@msspinner9814 Hi! Thank you for the questions! The loom in the video is also a 4-shaft - we're twins! A table loom is considered a direct tie-up loom, so each lever only controls 1 shaft. So use the tie-up section of the draft to tell you which shafts to lift. You can lift 1, 2, or 3 shafts together at any time. So if a pattern is written for 4-shafts and 6-treadles, you can still lift the appropriate shafts to create the pattern. Does that make sense? Let me know what follow-up questions you have!
@msspinner98148 күн бұрын
@@ActonCreative I understand the direct tie-up, so when I only have 4 levers, I start reading the treadling chart from the left, perform all six columns of information and then repeat?
@ActonCreative8 күн бұрын
@@msspinner9814 Not quite. You will "read" 1 row/pick at a time in the treadling section, which is below the tie-up/crossword puzzle section. The tie-up portion is simply a key because the treadling can have lots of variations. If you haven't seen the Reading a Weaving Draft episode yet, that might be helpful! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ateUZNeaqbWZc2Q.html Let me know how else I can help you!

Would that include if your doing a rug? Do u still split those threads in the heddles?
@ActonCreative8 күн бұрын
@@breagharose1857 Hi Breagha! For many rugs, you would simply work with a straight draw threading, which makes life easier. But 99% of the time, for any weaving project on a mult-shaft loom, you assign one warp yarn to one heddle. It's very rare to ever double up. Does that answer your question?
@conniepeterson1228 күн бұрын
I just finished an overshot runner. The person that ordered it loved it so much that she ordered another one, same pattern, same color, only just a little longer because she wants to give it to her daughter. Two shuttles ... I like them but not on my 15" because there isn't as much room to throw the shuttles.
@ActonCreative8 күн бұрын
Connie, that is fantastic! Overshot really is fun!
@justinweaver75438 күн бұрын
A good way to ease into overshot weaving is to dress the loom with a solid color yarn and use a simple threading like a straight twill. Load one shuttle with the warp yarn (tabby or background) and another shuttle with the same warp yarn but doubled and in a contrasting color (pattern). I like to tie up the treadles so that the leftmost treadle lifts one tabby shed and the rightmost treadle lifts the other tabby shed. The 4 inner treadles control pattern sheds. When the tabby shuttle is on the left, I use the leftmost treadle. When it's on the right, i use the rightmost treadle. This way it is easy to remember how to make the background. Then it's just a matter of experimenting with treadling the pattern. The joy of overshot is that you can create many pattern variations with simple threadings just by activating the pattern sheds in different combinations. Another option to get used to manipulating two shuttles is to try a simple Gerstenkorn (aka barleycorn) pattern. The cool thing about Gerstenkorn is that you only need one tabby shed. Because of the manner it's threaded, there are only three pattern sheds. Marguerite Porter Davison has an entire chapter on these weaves in A Handweaver's Pattern Book.

I just started learning how to weave. I also started to learn how to sew. I want to make my own clothing, including weaving the fabric itself. So I am attracted to both patterns and color, being that I want to play with them in my personal wardrobe. And I like a rough outline of a plan, again because it permits me to ensure I can use the pieces I weave in my wardrobe. I am definitely a process person. I want to understand how and why it works the way it does. To me, this part is driven by emotion and desire. And yet, I find I am also attracted to the sensation of weaving. I want to be able to start and finish projects, so I can experience the sensation of it, and make judgement calls about that sensation. It provides some structure, and allows me to maximize my ability as a weaver and as a tailor. I'll need to if I'm going to make my own clothing!!!
