Thank you for your contribution to the Sunna heddle being made, it made my first Sami weaving so easy along with your two books with excellent illustrations on how to thread it.

Last night I started weaving the pattern from your Sunna heddle video (KZfaq) I paused the video long enough to copy the pattern for the first motif & then figured out the second motive by pausing the video just where you lay the woven band beside the pattern draft. I am using a bright turquoise background and white pattern threads and am loving watching the designs appear on my weaving. I am totally captivated and can vision a lot more Sami weaving in my future.

I am running a new online tutorial for the Braid Society early next year about band weaving. I am so pleased that you are enjoying weaving narrow bands. I find them absolutely fascinating. Susan Foulkes

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VERY CLEAR AND PRECISE INSPIRATIONAL VIDEO. I HAVE PURCHASED YOUR WONDERFUL TWO BOOKS ON SAMI WEAVING AND THE SHUTTLE AND RIGID HEDDLES AND AM EMBARKING ON THE BAND WEAVING JOURNEY SINCE FIRST VIEWING. I ALSO JOINED THE BRAID SOCIETY AND AGAIN THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THAT AS WELL. I APPRECIATE YOUR NOTING TO LEAVE THE SMALL LOOP TO BE PULLED THROUGH AT THE NEXT PICK AND LOVE THE PLASTIC GUIDE BOTH WHAT I CALL 'HOT TIPS' TO KEEP THE BAND EDGES STRAIGHT

The thirteen pattern threads are twice the thickness of the background threads. There are two background threads in between each of the pattern threads. To thread the heddle, it is easier to start in the centre. The middle pattern thread is always threaded through the centre hole of the heddle. In the slot and the hole to either side of this pattern thread, place background threads. The next pattern thread will go through the next slot and so on. I hope this helps Susan J Foulkes

Brilliant! Beautiful band, thank you for posting the video. It's helpful to see that you leave a loop after the pick instead of pulling it through right away. The picking up/leaving bit would be wonderful to see close up. I got the concept but there is a lot of detail and the video angle doesn't quite capture the details. Thank you!

The Braid Society has an online discussion group - Braids and Bands. Online tutorials are given through this group. The tutorial that I am running lasts for 2 weeks and starts on Feb 10. I will be posting details about it early January in Braids and Bands. The first week will look at bands using a double holed heddle and the second week at patterned bands - all from Sweden. Are you beating the weft hard enough? One other reason for long floats is that the weft is not pulled tight enough to make the band narrow. I hope this helps SJF

How will I find out how to do the online tutorial? Will the Braid Society inform me? I am very excited about this and I have no idea what an online tutorial looks like and wouldn't want to miss it. Could you elaborate please?

How did you put together your backstrap loom? This is my first attempt at any type of weaving, so I've got quite a steep learning curve here.

Hi Mrs Susan, I am wondering - where did you get that weaving shuttle you are using? The design seems very convenient, but i can't find it in any online shops here. Thanks! Sue

+sanni3003 HI. The shuttle I am using is a traditional Sami design and wonderful to use. They are available at shop.stoorstalka.com/sv/start.html Stoorstalka ship around the world. Do check out my blog for further ideas. durhamweaver64.blogspot.co.uk/ Happy weaving Susan

Thanks a lot! It is kind of hard to get this sort of equipment around here. I went to the local crafts and wool store, asked about looms and combs - and the stoorkeeper was confused as could be :D But thankfully the 3D-Printer in our FabLab was a lot more cooperative. I printed the first comb today, and tomorrow I'll see if the Laser Cutter will do the remaining items I just designed. Sure will be fun :)

+sanni3003 I am very impressed. 3D printing is so wonderful for producing equipment like rigid heddles. Their design is so simple that laser cutters should be able to get a smooth rounded edge. happy weaving Susan

:D Modern technology meeting ancient craftsmanship ;) I would post a photo here I took today of the laser cutter in action, if were possible. Everything has been successfully cut, all ready to start :)

I feel like this is a silly question. I could make a 5 pattern band using a 13-pattern thread heddle, right? I have yet to even begin but I am very excited to!
@durhamsilkweaver
@durhamsilkweaver 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. yes you can but you have to be very careful when threading the heddle. There will be a lot of empty slots. The background threads must follow each other in sequence e.g. hole long slot, hole long slot . Where there are short slots you will have to miss some of the ordinary holes and long slots in order to keep the border sequence correct. The warp ends will be spread out more so you also need to check that you are pulling in the weft sufficiently.

@@durhamsilkweaver I guess I should’ve asked you sooner, I plan to get the Sámi weaving bands book of yours… Which heddle should I get that would best suit that? Like how many pattern holes is most commonly shown? Thank you for your help and patience!

@@foodbeforefriends Hi. I have self published two books about Sami band weaving with Blurb. However, my book Weaving Patterned Bands: How to Create and Design with 5, 7, and 9 Pattern Threads published by Schiffer in 2018 has over 140 patterns for bands and detailed instructions for the standard heddle, pattern slot heddle and the inkle loom. This might be a better buy if you are a beginner. it is available from Amazon. I made KZfaq videos to accompany the book to illustrate the different types of equipment. Some are Sami patterns. The threading diagrams are very clear for the different types of equipment.
