I wonder if this weaving trick would work to hide the ends or if the whipping would be too tight. Take a length of thread, curve it back on itself and lay it on the area where you will whip with the loop end below where you will end the whipping and with the ends above the start of the whipping. Do your whipping and when you finish the whipping, pass the whipping ends through the loop and slowly pull both the loop ends upward so the whipping ends are drawn under the whipping.
@durhamsilkweaver
@durhamsilkweaver Ай бұрын
You can tie the ends as a double knot then press the whipping with an iron. This flattens the whipping. Using a needle to take the ends into the whipping is another way.

I have watched this great video multiple times. I need some help. What weight yarn to use, sport, Dk, etc? How to place the warp colors best? I want to make one for my son's wedding.

Hi. What a lovely way to celebrate the wedding with a personal gift. Look at my blog entries for October 2016 and May 2020. The crios made by John McAtasney is 6 cm in width and 190.5cm in length. in width and the four plaits at each end are 12.5 cm in length . (October 2016.) durhamweaver64.blogspot.com/ This might give you some ideas for colours. I have used double knit wool, 4-ply wool and chunky wool. The main criteria is that it should be warp faced weave so that the weft does not show. One crios I made with sock yarn used double, has 56 ends and is about 1.5 inches in width. A 60 warp end band made with dk wool is 2 inches. A mans crios is generally wider than a womans crios. I hope that this information helps you design and weave this lovely treasure. best wishes and happy weaving Susan J Foulkes

Being latvian, I can say, that easyest way to weave wide belts, for exsample Lielvarede belts, we use only latvian weaving style: 3:1.I do it on 4 shafts if there are 207nthreads, for example or on 2 shafts if belt is not so wide.

Do you have the draft for the 4 shaft loom by chance?
@durhamsilkweaver
@durhamsilkweaver 6 ай бұрын
The background is threaded in plain weave across the width of the belt. For a four shaft loom use shafts one and two. The three pattern threads on each side can be threaded onto shaft 3. The lifts will be 1and 3, 2 and 3 1 and 3, then 2, 1 , 2, This leaves the pattern threads on the surface for three picks and then underneath for three picks. The threading will start 1,2,1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3, then plain weave until you reach the other border. I hope this makes sense Susan

Ive tried this with a Heddle Basic 103 double holes and my warp ends are tangled. Patterned warp and background warp are crossed and tangled. How do i start each warp ( patterned vs background) without crossing or tangling them together? I’m using 30 patterned threads and 6 border . Please help! Also, I’ve read the pattern threads need to be thicker than background. Does the fact that the patterned threads are doubled account for this thickness? Or does the actual thread need to be 1.5x the thickness of border threads…

Greetings from Finland and thank you for an extremely helpful video for a beginner weaver! 😊❤️ One question, though: do you weave the pattern with double threads ? If so, how do you warp if you want single threads only, e.g. when using a bulkier yarn for the pattern? Do you warp with two threads in every second hole and move one afterwards ..?

Thank you for this video that accompanies your book, which I now have...I noticed that the majority of the book is based on using a double slotted heddle, a backstrap loom, and a shuttle. Will I be able to use the majority of patterns with my Inkle? I'm getting confused as to what adjustments I might have to make in the actual weaving...thanks for taking the time to respond, as I am a new weaver, and would like to understand if this book will work for me.
@durhamsilkweaver
@durhamsilkweaver Жыл бұрын
Hello Barbara. Yes my book shows how the Sunna double slotted heddle makes patterned band weaving easier. However all the patterns will work on an inkle loom as my video shows. For the double slotted heddle the threading is straightforward as you have to follow the order of the slots and holes. On an inkle loom the threading is also straightforward as the threads go in order through a heddle and then unhedged. I find that it helps to note down the threading before you start as I always thread the centre pattern thread though a heddle. Originally pick up patterned band weaving would have used a standard heddle - only long slots and holes which correspond to an inkle heddle and unhedged. The specialist heddle was devised to make patterned band weaving easier to learn and quicker to do. I hope this helps. Good luck with your weaving. Susan J Foulkes

That's a heddle with half-slits, right? What is your opinion of half-slit heddle vs double-hole heddle? I've seen your other video doing the same bands on double hole. Do double hole vs half slit have more advantages? for other techniques? I did my first Samí band with the pattern threads sitting above the heddle. And I use regular Samí half slit heddle for Norwegian Pickup, as well. But it's a bit more complicated to thread it because some slots and slits need to be skipped.
@durhamsilkweaver
@durhamsilkweaver Жыл бұрын
Hi. there are two heddle designs with pattern slots. For the Sigga heddle the background threads are woven in plain weave. The weft goes over one then under one background thread. It is a Sigga heddle that can be used to weave this type of Sami design. The Sunna heddle has a different arrangement for the background threads. They weave half basket weave. This means if you ignore the pattern threads, the weft will go over tow then under two. Usually this means that the weft must be the same colour as the background threads or it will show through in the pattern thread area. This is known as Baltic pick-up - or Norwegian pickup if you have the book by Heather Torgenrud. I prefer the heddle with pattern slots rather than the double holed heddles but they weave a slightly different version of pickup patterns. i hope this helps - sorry for the delay in answering. Hi Lynn. Peter Collingwood discusses this in his book The Techniques of Tablet Weaving. However, the method is not usual and he goes on to discuss 6 hole tablets and examples from Sulawesi where the weave structure is different from the method which I describe. I do not know of anyone who has published anything else about this method. It does make a good cord and is easy to do. Susan J Foulkes
