My Webflow course 😌 www.lighthouse...
In todays video I talk about Webflow vs WordPress and some of the myths surrounding Webflow and it's limitations. I use both tools all the time but I think WordPress users should be more open to trying Webflow. Do you agree?

Both, easier than coding from scratch. Oxygen, Webflow & Elementor worth mastering and why not?!

Started yesterday, and I am amazed. Knowing the basics of CSS, HTML and classes structure, it is super easy to build with great semantic. The drawback is that the free version is poor, so I will have to spend a few bucks to build my first project there.

I have, it's okay but too limited for my taste. It's great for really simple and static websites though. @05:00 Re: Difficulty ====================== I disagree, the webflow editor was dirt simple for me, much simple than elemnator. It largely depends on your background. If you are a coder, you will have no issue with Webflow or Oxygen. @07:56 Re: Terrible Code ====================== All page builders will generate terrible code. The difference is a difference of degrees. They do save you time though. @08:50 Re: Costs ====================== The cost is not the only issue I have with Webflow's payment plans, it's all the limitations that comes with said plans, I mean you can get a basic WP site up and running for as low as 3 bucks MO (which is good enough for simple projects), it's just an unnecessary cost with not a whole lot . I do use and love Oxygen builder but I have no intentions of switching to Webflow, I actually understand the WP codebase well enough for me to able to customize it as I see fit. Also, there are many one click installers for WP at most hosts. So getting wordpress hosting is hassle free at this point. It's an ancient piece of software, so you will always find integration for it.

For my personal website I switched to Webflow, I've been using Elementor Pro for only 4 months now, before I build with Oxygen, and before that with Divi, now Webflow, it takes care of all the things where Wordpress took me ages to set things up properly and make it run smooth with every single update of plugins or theme. Plus SEO is build in with Webflow, all of this is reducing the time spent to run it, plus it is very much more affordable and more profitable then Wordpress, for sure!

I worked with both and I think both are great. I think it's okay to switch Page builders in WP because technology is changing very fast and it's always possible that something better comes out. For example, Visual Composer was at the beginning the most popular Page Builder, but then Page builders like Elementor, Divi... released, they improved and got much better than Visual Composer and VC is now one of the worst Page Builders in my opinion now.

I tried webflow but I find it very limiting and expensive, it is good for brochure sites only. I still use Wordpress with Bootstrap or Tailwind but I build apps with it not brochure sites, these days though I use either headless or Node based technologies for my projects.

Natively that's true. However with external tools like wized.com that is built specifically for Webflow, along with webflows api recently becoming a little more open, it's possible to do a lot more than you'd think. The cost is slightly subjective. Clients of a decent size just don't care about paying a little extra for managed hosting each month. But like you say, if you have the skill to make things yourself, it's probably not going to change the way you work. I use it largely because of how much faster I can develop sites using it 👍

Thanks Sam. I did your courses in Webflow as well as a few more and I am just about ready to develop sites for those dog walking businesses! I don't see much info out there about the best options when it comes to booking and payment options. For example, a website for a bus/coach company, restaurant, hairdressers, golf course, English lessons, etc. Where would you look for these options?

Haha I don't mean to pick on dog walking businesses. I'd love that job. In terms of booking and payments this might be of some use to you university.webflow.com/integrations-type/calendars-and-scheduling. These are external integrations for booking. In terms of restaurants an OpenTable integration I'd imagine makes sense. Hope that helps dude, I'll do some videos on this kind of thing at some point 👍

Regarding the cost - webflow is $48/mo minimum PER SITE for hosting and designer in perpetuity? There’s no self hosting option and they don’t really specify what kind of hosting you’re getting - assuming vps for that price? $576 a year is a huge difference from $72 a year Vultr hf vps hosting plus a $150 to $200 lifetime unlimited site builder like bricks or oxygen. The main selling point here would be if it saves a significant amount of time to build and maintain.
@thewarper3393

@02:45 It is simply not true for wordpress. Good devs dont really use pagebuilders for important projects. You can also use WP as a data manager and build your front-end separately and access your wordpress database via a RESTful API, you can even integrate GraphQL. WP is great IF you know how to code. The functional programming architecture at it's core makes it VERY easy to customize it. WebFlow just cant compete with that for my particular demographic.

I can't figure out the pricing structure. If I have a small creative shop that wants to create websites for clients and give them editor/author access, what plan do I need without having to figure out how to send a rocket to Mars?
@sam-harrison
@sam-harrison 10 ай бұрын
Yeah their pricing has always been confusing. Basically if you’re creating Websites for clients, you as the developer will probably want the “Freelancer” workspace plan. This allows you to create the website on your account and when it’s complete you can transfer over to your client who will need a hosting plan. Which hosting plan they need will depend whether you’re using the Webflow CMS. If you need to do additional work on your clients site your client can allow you access by adding you to their account as a guest for free. Hope that helps 👍🏻

I'm looking to start a new blogging website. I keep seeing reviews about how webflow is not the best option for bloggers. Are there any bloggers out there with real feedback on this?
@sam-harrison
@sam-harrison 4 ай бұрын
Webflow allows you to create a blog via its CMS. The only reason against Webflow it’s CMS item limit which effectively means 10k blog articles maximum. However, you’d need to blog 10 times a week, every week for 20 years to hit that limit by which time the internet may look very different by then. Also you have the ability to export your blogs away in csv format if ever you wanted. However Wordpress is definitely the cheaper option on a budget. Hope that helps 👍🏻

It's an extremely complicated topic and only legal professionals can really help. Although GDPR laws are positive on paper in protecting user data, the implementation of these laws are terrible. The vast majority of websites on the Internet both webflow or wordpress are most likely not fully compliant. Even the use of Google fonts now have to be self hosted to be compliant which a vast number of websites won't have changed. One thing you can do is use an external form collection like formspark.io

Since, my use case would be the CRM with webflow, for my EU / German clients this is an absolute deal breaker. And since Webflow has been aware of this for years and obviously don't care, I put Weblow on the back burner which is sad. I just re-built my own website with the container feature of Elementor (still in alpha state, though) but I LOOOOOOOVE it! Maybe Webflow will surprise me some day in the 2030ies ;) with servers in the EU but until then, not an option.
@sam-harrison
@sam-harrison 2 жыл бұрын
It's a difficult one. I've seen some sources say it is gdpr compliant despite the us data centre and I've seen some say it's definitely not. The truth is so many websites are breaking the law in some small way. There are so many huge crm's that don't even have a EU data centre. It's a ridiculous implementation of what was a well intended law. Btw that elementor container might eventually come out of beta in the 2030s also haha 👍 But jokes aside I'd watch out since elementor updates are notorious for breaking sites especially if you're using something not released. Bricks builder is looking like they'll dethrone elementor at some point. I'm playing around with it at the moment, it's pretty good!

If I purchase a Webflow template and export it into WP to operate, do I need to pay for a subscription through Webflow to continue using it? I own a short term rental and found a great template for my services. Thank you! @Sam Harrison
@sam-harrison
@sam-harrison Жыл бұрын
Hi Fredeline, it very much depends on what features the template has and how you plan on exporting it over to WordPress. You loose control of anything cms based but a static website will work fine and you don't need to continue paying for Webflow if you don't want to. Just be aware you're then only able to update it manually within WordPress and lose any webflow features 👍

Hey Manny, you can, but.... I would double check the ecommerce plans before using webflow to make sure it's the right fit for you. In all honesty, Webflow ecommerce isn't as good as other solutions at the moment. It might be fine for you, but there are payment gateway limitations, product variant limitations due to cms item limits etc. Just be wary of this to make sure this isn't a problem for you. Shopify is hard to beat at the moment 👍

Ahhhh I didn’t know you could export Webflow sites into our own hosting and that our clients could update their own webflow based pages and content. I still haven’t built a webflow site as the learning curve too steep the few times I tried to get into. Though WordPress is what I’ve built 100s of sites upon over 8 yrs but the sensitivity and frequency my Elementor based sites breaks due to update conflicts is getting very grrrrr. The dynamic content and animations and reliability is what first has drawn me to webflow.

@sigma_z
@sigma_z Жыл бұрын
@@sam-harrisonthere was the part regarding price. I felt that to be very biased as you mentioned that even though WebFlow is much more expensive than Wordpress, you can get higher paying clients etc... this part was very biased. In fact, I felt your whole video was very biased to WebFlow. I'm a 22 years enterprise architect of cross platform mobile and previously web, SQL DBA and back office and now micro services developer. I've also been CTO of several companies. There are also some other untruths too, like learning WebFlow is easier. Not it's not. And I'm a full OOPL developer. I can code anyone backwards. The last time I looked at WebFlow, all I could see was the tie in, because even if you decide to export your site away from WebFlow, you'll be left with just static code and a database that doesn't hook up to it. With wordpress, it you decide to stop using a particular theme or switch themes, you'll still have all your code and content hooked up. So it's a no for Web Flow for me and yeah, sorry, although going into your video open minded, the impression and opinions you gave were not unbiased.
