Back in 1989/1990 I worked in an institution where the original 1939 buildings had terrazzo floors; they looked virtually brand new even with the heavy use. It is amazing flooring.

Is it okay to use terrazzo tiles in bathrooms and kitchens, or because of its high porosity and high water absorption, which will be difficult?

Thanks for a great presentation! I saw outdoor ping pong tables with a terazzo top. Is it something you would recommend to use terrazzo for? And what terrazzo system should be used in for these tables. Epoxy or cement?
@Terrazzco

Appreciate the feedback. Terrazzo is a versatile product that can be used for different designs applications today. Epoxy terrazzo is only recommended for indoor settings. To design a terrazzo table for outdoors, cement terrazzo is the ideal application.

Sand cushion wire mesh isolation sheet can you please give me more details on this. What is required and alternative materials one can use to avoid cracking especially over expansion joints.
@Terrazzco
@Terrazzco 3 жыл бұрын
Our technical representative can further assist you in providing a more in-depth answer. He will need more clarification. You can email him directly at joshua@terrazzco.com. But sand cushion slip sheets are used for sand cushion cement system, where the system itself is a crack suppression system as the terrazzo is floating on a layer of sand instead of being bonded to the substrate. For epoxy terrazzo systems, you can avoid cracking by with a flexible crack membrane.

For this demonstration, we used our TERRAZZCO EZPour Epoxy 158 resin. Since the time of this video, we updated our epoxy resin formula to what is now known as "Groutless" EZPour Epoxy 158, which cures with fewer pinholes. It is contractor-developed and in over 50% of installations, no grouting was necessary. Here is a link to the product: terrazzco.com/groutless-ezpour-epoxy-158/ . We also have product data sheets for you to view. If you have any questions about the resin, you can reach out to us to inquiry@terrazzco.com and we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Can you use wax on terrazzo floors. I was told no, only a Crete sealer...
@Terrazzco
@Terrazzco 11 ай бұрын
It is advised not to use wax on terrazzo floors. Its tends to create buildup and dull the finish of the terrazzo floor. For terrazzo floors using TERRAZZCO products, we recommend a water-based acrylic sealer (ex. Betco Sure Cure/Untouchable)

Cost of terrazzo can vary by region of the United States. I've provided a cost calculator breaking down the cost of epoxy terrazzo over 40 years, the information provided by the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association: terrazzco.com/terrazzo-flooring-cost-calculator/. Epoxy terrazzo is cost-effective because of the low maintenance costs. if you are looking for a specific quote for an epoxy terrazzo system using TERRAZZCO Brand epoxy resin and aggregates, our sales representatives would be happy to assist you in addressing cost options in details for a project. What kind of resin should I use? Because yours is not in Algeria
@Terrazzco
@Terrazzco 3 жыл бұрын
For seamless epoxy terrazzo flooring or epoxy terrazzo precast, you will need a two-part epoxy resin system with a Part A resin and part B hardener. If you are looking for a manufacturer that sells terrazzo resin in Algeria, I can recommend some suppliers/companies that work with epoxy terrazzo and are closer to your region of the world that would benefit you economically. Try Flowcrete UK, 4M Group, Fribel, Gulf, or SFS Floor Turkey

Hi Sonico. Good to hear from you. We are also located in North Carolina in Charlotte so feel free to reach out to us later on at inquiry@terrazzco.com if you need further assistance. But to answer your question regarding polishing epoxy terrazzo, I've provided you with some steps in the grinding, grouting, and polishing process. General procedures are as follows: Grinding Epoxy Terrazzo: Once the terrazzo is poured in place, the next step is grinding the terrazzo to transition from a rough to smooth surface. Installers will insert the appropriate grit diamond to the floor grinding, a 40 or 80 grit diamond depending on the hardness of the aggregate. Installers will start off in the area where the terrazzo was poured first has been curing the longest. Using the electrical floor grinder, an installer will slowly push the grinder along a path. At end of path an installer pulls the grinder in reverse along the same path that the grinder was pushed towards. This is repeated several times in an area, using side to side motion to not form a trench. After 4-5 passages, check the floor for the exposed divider strip. Once the floor is rough ground, all the edges can be ground with an edge grinder. This includes areas such as the walls, columns and anywhere the electric grinder cannot reach. After the edge work is completed, it is recommended that 2 passes of 100 grit diamonds be run to help blend the floor before grouting. Grouting Epoxy Terrazzo: Prior to grouting the ground floor, an installer will clean the floor with water and a scrubber and then vacuum the surface completely dry. Grouting refers to covering any pinholes and voids left after the grinding process. In this case after the floor is completely dry, an installer will mix up an epoxy color to be grouted (5:1 ratio) in small amounts approximately a quart. Next, an installer will pour the epoxy mix and tightly work the epoxy into any pin holes and voids using a flat straight edge trowel. After a large section is grouted lightly, an installer will dust the wet grout with ATF-20 and lightly push a broom over the sand to work the sand into the pinholes. (BTW, you may want to take a look at TERRAZZCO Groutless EZPour Epoxy 158, which cures with fewer pinholes. In over 50% of installations contractors did not need to grout :) Here's a link: terrazzco.com/groutless-ezpour-epoxy-158/ Polishing Epoxy Terrazzo: The procedures for polishing a terrazzo floor is similar to the rough grinding stages; however, it is performed wet and not dry. An Installer will begin using a 80 grit carborundum stones or 100 grit resin pads to remove the epoxy grout. This is done by moving in the same motion and patterns as in the rough grinding stage. Grout on the edges can be removed in similar fashion as in the rough grinding stage using a 120-grit diamond disk and then repeated using a 200-grit resin pad. Afterwards the floor can be finished with 200 grit resin pads. Unless the owner requires a higher polish therefor an installer will repeat previous steps increasing the grit to specified finish. Vacuum polishing slurry and start with fresh water when changing between increasements of diamond grit. I hope this helps you for your terrazzo projects. Please check out our website anytime for more information at www.terrazzco.com and contact any of our sales representatives with further questions at inquiry@terrazzco.com.

I’m very interested in learning more, I’m curious if this is a common technique? Is there a decent demand for terrazzo craftworkers? Do terrazzo finishers usually start off as brick layers or concrete finishers etc?
@Terrazzco
@Terrazzco 10 ай бұрын
In the terrazzo industry, there are many terrazzo systems that can be installed including cement and epoxy terrazzo, each has its own technique. These are performed on a job site. There is also precast terrazzo, which is manufactured within a company's facility and the products and then delivered to a job site for contractors to install. The demand for terrazzo craftsman is projected to increase as more terrazzo is being installed. Terrazzo installers are required to travel across the US. There are terrazzo installation companies in nearly every state. Larger states like New York, California, and Florida have multiple terrazzo companies. In terms of job experience, an individual can take on an apprenticeship or on-the-job training to learn the terrazzo process. A person with masonry skills can find a good career in terrazzo.

Is it okay to use terrazzo tiles in bathrooms and kitchens, or because of its high porosity and high water absorption, which will be difficult?
@Terrazzco
@Terrazzco 2 жыл бұрын
Its acceptable to use either a poured in place or terrazzo tile system for bathrooms and kitchen spaces. Epoxy terrazzo is nonporous and far more water resistant than cement terrazzo. Due to its nonporous properties, a seamless epoxy terrazzo is not only water resistant, but also stain and bacteria resistant. Whereas seamless terrazzo is poured over most substrates, tile will require a setting material during installation, and include the grout lines. Grout lines are one of the major differences between a seamless terrazzo system and a terrazzo tile system. The grout lines increases the overall maintenance of the flooring system and is common place for dirt and bacteria to hide. Poured in place terrazzo is a smooth seamless system where simple sweeping and mopping routine will clean the terrazzo floor.

Would you recommend terrazzo to be manufactured into bowls for eating? If so, should cement terrazzo or epoxy terrazzo be used? Does the porous nature of cement terrazzo have any implication for food use?
