Matthew Bone The biggest issue with Richard Stallman's movement, is the fact that metaphorically he's giving everyone the keys to the front door, including the government/Google/Facebook/Hackers, by giving people/everyone full accsees to the source code, that creates a huge vulnerability, and it basically makes everything else hes doing, pointless. I wrote more on this, in another comment here, but this is the worst part of his movement.

@Aldnox I'm refering to Richard Stallman as a whole. He would prefer no passwords, he would like everyone to be able to edit their own sytem/version of thier OS, meaning by doing this, people can create vulnerabilities in the OS. Linus Trovalds, is helping him with the harder tasks luckily/the kernal is being handled by someone that actually knows what thier doing. Anyway Richards Stallmans way just isn't practical. I know what the free software movement is, and in a few ways, its a great concept, but in allot of other ways its not.

If there is one truth that stares us in the face, right now more than ever, it is, how hard it is to gain ones freedom, and how easy it is to lose it ? If we are not yet willing to acknowledge and to appreciate, how valuable, and priceless freedom really is then we do not deserve it. In every war be it covert, or overt, and in every conflict, all the sides are fighting for their own freedom. Exactly which side is free in themselves. Freedom clearly is in the greatest of demand, but also in the shortest of supply, but neither does there appear to be a supplier of true freedom. But neither is money truly able to purchase the true freedom that every side so desperately seeks.

The best analogy or example or illustration and demonstration when it comes to freedom can be found in nature all around us, in our own environment and in our ecology. When I look at the countless shades of green and the countless shapes of leaves of different plants, trees and shrubs, at just a very small part of a greenery or a worded area, I am mesmerised, awe inspired, dumb struck. How many species of animal and plant life have already become extinct. We have not been worthy and proper stewards and custodians of our own home. We have not taken care of our own environment and our own planet properly. We have certainly lost all the species of life and all the diversity in our world. We would rather deny and not grant freedom for self expression and for growth. We would rather be like Hitler, Putin, Kim Jon Un, Mao Tse Tung.

If people choose to value money, could they possibly not be eager, ready and willing to sell not just their morals but also any of the personal freedoms they might enjoy for it. You can always have true freedom as long as you learn to enjoy it responsibly and respect other people's freedoms as much as your own and not try to curtail or infringe upon other people's personal liberties and personal freedoms. But is it in the right spirit to put a price on all kinds of true freedoms including for freedom software. People who defend the case of money and speak for it must think if they truly love money and truly value money, are staunchly loyal and faithful to money, money will truly love them back, will always be loyal and faithful to them and will always be there for them, so much so that they will always be full of money, nevermind that even now they are having to pay more and more money for less and less both in quality and in quantity of everything.

Live Listen is powerful. What does Stallman know of this active listening device? Anyone with a cellphone and a hearing aide can "read" his/her neighbor's conversations. Even people advocating for hearing aide purposes discount its common use. Either we must find ways to shun spying (gossip) or find ways of shutting off networks that target a person or group. "no off switch" And micro-movements of vocal apparatus. The vocal apparatus is moving always when speech is involved, overt or covert.

The nature of the spirit of freedom is to free hence it always only frees itself, and also tries to free bondage, but the law prevails and says only freedom deserves to be free never bondage, and only bondage deserves to be bound, never freedom. If you happen to be a spectator, who are you rooting for ? If you happen to be a player, who are you playing for ? Whose side are you on ? Lawfulness is seemingly binding in the beginning but in the end only liberating. Lawlessness is seemingly liberating in the beginning but in the end only binding. Everything evil seemingly(illusorily) promises to pay you in the beginning, but in the end, it really only costs you. Everything good seemingly threatens to cost you in the beginning, but in the end it really only pays you.

Yes. He promotes not using KZfaq, and if you really want to watch videos from that platform you can use youtube-dl which is a Free tool (although he acknowledges that this is not something KZfaq as a platform needs).

The human mind is an extremely powerful instrument of thought, but it can be used by the thinker(human) to think both right thoughts as well as wrong thoughts. Right thoughts liberate and free the thinker and his mind, wrong thoughts bind the thinker(human) and his mind. Likewise with the heart from which proceeds not only the humans feelings, but also the words of his mouth, and likewise with the body from which proceeds his deeds.

The problem for me as a self employed software developer is, that it's so hard to monetize. I can't just give everyone the source code, I don't do anything malicious and I am very for the free software movement. The first thing that I would like to prove is, that my software does not share any personal data. I would give source of that one network library, but noone could really be sure I am not tricking them. If I come up with an algorithm to solve thta, I will gladly share it, I mean honestly. But for now closed source is all I can do.

I know your pain, I have been in the same exact situation. I would like to give away all my software (in fact I have given away more than half my software) but I also need to feed my family. When I give away my software the users simply take it and go away without ever compensating me for my time, somehow that doesn't feel right to those of us who need to survive as well as the people who use the software. Yes, Stallman say that he doesn't care about price, but he survives in other ways since he is famous, for us regular guys we need a solution that supports us so we in turn can write more free software for everyone.

To be honest this is mostly imaginary... First of all: if your software is for unique customer in 99% of the cases not one would read that code trust me. If its for general download - like an app or game or something... You can put it out with licence that also makes copies free software - at worst they just advertise it more. But I think you can take GPL and just add an extra clause that they can take the code but can only sell it to linux customers - which is again FOR the cause and likely is pain for those who want to take advantage currently. There are many ways.

Just like a variable, or a name, or a symbol in a program, every person always represents, is always a place holder for, always stands for, always symbolizes and epitomizes, one or more values, not always quantifiable or numerical or even tangible, hopefully by choice rather than by circumstance or by compulsion, and freedom could be one of those values, for those who choose to sincerely believe in, to value and to respect freedom, of others as much as their own, then they do become placeholder's for, vanguards for, emissaries, spokespersons for, a representative of, an advocate of, a contender for, a container and a dwelling place for the spirit of freedom. If one chooses to value the spirit of true freedom one becomes the embodiment of and the personification of the spirit of freedom.

Light only tries to illumine the darkness and in trying to do so only itself becomes brighter, and darkness only tries to darken the light and in trying to do so only itself becomes darker. Freedom only tries to free bondage and in trying to do so only itself becomes more free, and bondage only tries to bind freedom and in trying to do so only itself becomes more bound. True freedom is not the freedom to do the wrong thing. True power is not the power to do the wrong thing. It is not as much the undertaking itself as the (e-motive)spirit behind it that is the cause of it's success or of it's failure. The spirit of lawfulness is only seemingly binding in the beginning but in the end it is only liberating. The spirit of lawlessness is only seemingly liberating in the beginning, but in the end it is only binding. Any undertaking that is motivated by the spirit of lawfulness is slated for success, and any undertaking motivated by the spirit of lawlessness is bound for failure. The spirit of wealth is only seemingly enriching in the beginning but in the end it is only impoverishing. The spirit of virtue is only seemingly impoverishing in the beginning, but in the end it is only enriching. Any undertaking motivated by the spirit of virtue is slated for success. Any undertaking motivated by the spirit of wealth is bound for failure. The spirit of greed is only seemingly gain in the beginning, but in the end it is only loss. The spirit of generosity is only seemingly loss in the beginning, but in the end it is only gain. Any undertaking motivated by the spirit of generosity is slated for success. Any undertaking motivated by the spirit of greed is bound for failure.

Freedom is very real. By that I mean, choice is very real. Though inwardly all of us probably fear and suspect, but may not know for sure and even if we do, we simply cannot believe, come to terms with, and acknowledge the fact that money never buys true freedom, true love, true prosperity, true health, true peace, true happiness, true joy....., although we have never stopped counting on it to. So we have always had and we always do have a choice in this regard, either to put our faith in money or to put our faith in morals. So the most precious commodity to us is always our own faith never another's money. But almost all of us more out of naivety and out of ignorance, out of a lack of true wisdom, choose to put our faith in money. Lack of true knowledge and true wisdom is always the only true lack, a poor fund of knowledge and a poor understanding of things is always the only true poverty, never a lack of money. But money does not buy any of that either. So choice or freedom always exists, but what we always truly lack in is only the wisdom to make the right choices.

As much as I love Stallman and free software, I can't help but find a few inadequacies in what they're trying to accomplish. Even if software is 'free as in freedom', in the way that Stallman describes it at the beginning of the talk describing four basic requirements, none of that means that the software actually respects the freedoms or basic dignity of its users. All this means is that now it can be transparently malicious, instead of opaquely malicious. In recent years we have seen the exponential growth of 'Software as a Service', where it is not merely the binary executing on your machine that provides some experience for the user, but in fact there is an entire infrastructure of which your local machine only constitutes an endpoint. And one cannot use this software fully without also being engaged in this infrastructure. So, even if every bit of running software in this infrastructure is 'free', it can still accomplish the same data surveillance and flout privacy so long as it maintains its code base in a manner compliant with the GPL or other FSF-friendly license. And indeed, we can see lately several large corporations, MS, McGoogle, Amazon, etc., engaging more and more in 'open source' projects, integrating them into their own products, even complying with this standard of 'free' in certain cases like Azure Sphere. Stallman's line of thinking seems to indicate that, if presented with the information and a choice, that people will not use such software that doesn't respect their best interest, and migrate to other software that does. My observation of the state of things today leads me to believe that wouldn't be the case, and that even as 'alternatives' spring up they'll engage in the same behavior so long as the profit potential exists. But even beyond that, people will continue to use such malicious platforms even while being fully aware of the abuses, as in the case of Facebook, Twitter, or even KZfaq. The infrastructure required for these massive services are such that there are necessarily only a small assortment of large, well funded companies which can provide it. Smaller startups either fail due to being unable to compete at the same level, or get bought up by larger companies. These services may become so large that they become soft requirements for engaging in their careers or communications with friends, family, and colleagues. Furthermore, the partnership between the state and these companies leaves users largely powerless to affect any meaningful change on these platforms. These platforms can transparently manipulate their user base because users have no recourse and no alternative. So, in conclusion, I think that the FSF, GNU, other organizations and projects committed to free software are all necessary and welcome, but are also not enough to change the paradigm. They will always be a mere mitigation against state and corporate transgressions against free individuals and societies, at least with this approach. I think that the only way to accomplish something more meaningful, to make free software the mainline, is to change the configuration of our society itself, because presently it is perfectly amenable to the current situation which we are trying to prevent.
