Who says daytime weddings can't be a blast? This 2021 celebration at Aria was almost two years in the making because of COVID. I'm super proud of this event and worked really hard to make this day everything Jason & Jill deserved. Not only was it a blast, but I finally got to try out some of my new wedding setups. The Infinity DJ Console and Electro-Voice 30M were the real stars of this event.

That is a really kind compliment. I've been at this a while, but truthfully when you have great equipment that compliments your workflow and capabilities it comes together a lot easier. Don't get me wrong, weddings are a TON OF WORK and those are some heavy ass subs (LOL) but all in all I have perfected my setup so I don't stress as much and things come together really nicely.

Just joined as a subscriber (to everything, with said bell notification) after watching your ingenious satellite set up for the EV 30M. As far as acoustically terrible set ups go, one thing you could consider is the following. I have a few degrees in Audio Engineering, Sound Reinforcement, Music Technology, etc so I can be reasonably assured this would help. There's something called an " Subwoofer Isolation Stabilizer" pad you can place directly under your subs and subsequently your entire set up. Significantly mitigates the reverberations that ripple around rooms made of challenging materials (glass, marble, hard plastics, granite, some stone) and moderately subdues the echo. I did a New Year's Eve wedding once on the third floor of a mall that was encircled by glass and dear God was it a master class in EQing the bass frequencies to output a bearable mix. Anyway, hope that gives you some food for thought. Keep on rocking you're my hero that I hope to be half as good as some day in the DJ world.

Two things: 1) I've been a column array "holdout" because I feel like my QSC K8 is so great vs any column array currently on the market. Your confidence in your Evolve 30 (and one other DJ friend who also swears by these) in the real world is swaying me! 2) I DJ'd at Aria about a month ago. I got to use the chapel and that was another acoustic challenge. Later, when I did the reception, my wife, who was assisting me, asked..."why does it sound like that (behind the DJ booth)?" due to the slapback reverb/echo combo in the room. I wasn't using my usual monitor to my right due to time constraints, and now I'm worried about dealing with similar situations in the future, as I'd like to do a gear/look refresh. You have creative solutions for many of the problems we face as mobile DJs. How do you handle the slapback when you're mixing? Turn up the headphones more? Split cueing?
@DJRachelLynch
@DJRachelLynch Жыл бұрын
1. The K8 is a great little speaker. If you love it, don't worry about the updated unless the battery-powered feature and iP43 rating are essential to you. However, the 30M is louder and more flexible with its eight-channel Dynacord mixer. It is the perfect ceremony/cocktail hour speaker IMO and would be a significant upgrade from the QSC K8, as reflected in the price point and specs. I still plan on using my 30M as my primary ceremony choice, but I will definitely have uses for the EVERSE. As you know, there are a million ways to do this job, and we have a lot of great technology at our disposal. 2. ARIA is one of the most acoustically challenging venues I've been in. I have not had a chance to use their chapel, but I have seen pics, and its a marble echo chamber. I can imagine how challenging that is. In a situation like that, I would use lower volume and more filler speakers to cut back on the echo. I never use a monitor. I don't feel like carrying the extra gear. I use my headphones to mix and block out the echo. I have DJ'd in hockey arenas before with TREMENDOUS delay and echo. Headphones and using my eyes with the waveforms were the only way I could do it. No fancy tips here. Just using my ears and eyes to do what I need to do.
@thekennyfiesta
@thekennyfiesta Жыл бұрын
@@DJRachelLynch Thank you for the detailed answer. I'm very, very grateful. My wife sends her compliments on your ceremony setup! As far as Aria's chapel goes, you're 100% correct on that approach (filler speakers). Proof that it's best to have a "second pair of eyes" on any situation. And yes...we do what we gotta do LOL, many a DJ has a 1,000 yard stare as they tell you a DJ war story. Very grateful, again. Have a great week.

Hi... We haven't tried out the EV systems yet. Since we have a lot of smaller weddings I was curious about how many people you think you could use a pair of the EV 30ms for if you were using them as your main system for the reception?? I personally would not use the 30M for a “main system”. It is a FANTASTIC cocktail hour speaker, wedding ceremonies, small retail events, musicians at small pubs, general PA, small pool party, gyms, things like that, where people aren’t usually dancing. Check this video out. It explains everything. Also it’s not really about number of people, it’s about size of the room and meeting your sound objective. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eeB7d6yLyp7ZZqc.html

Great great job and fantastic video. Tons of thoughts and comments - won't post them all, but watching all the extensive and great set up work you do with your equipment made me have to ask about this issue which I'm sure you've thought about and have been asked about - have you considered taking an assistant with you ? I just think there are so many benefits in doing that - 1. time - you can get there later, get back earlier. Have more time during your day and more sleep time for the next one... 2. Improve your dj'ing simply by not being as tired having to dj immediately after having set up everything yourself. I'm sure you do amazing work as it is, but there's no way that an easier setup (and more free time due to later time in the day leaving for the event) doesn't improve that work even if by a little bit. 3. for you specifically - having more freedom to film stuff or having someone to film stuff for you, so that angle improves too. 4. It's a really good sell point. I know it sounds silly but it helps when you tell a customer you have someone else there with you to help not just with the setup, but anything you might need during the event - expected or unexpected. 5. And very much related - actual help in dealing with any type of emergency during the event - whether it's equipment related, or even just bathroom related... 6. On longer drives - the company and maybe even some help with the driving itself can help getting to the place "fresher" never mind the safety aspect of it, especially on the night drives back... 7. And one final benefit - over time, and I think we're talking years here ? hopefully ? Having each event be easier on you physically and from a time consumption pov, will help prolong your career imo by having less wear and tear both physically and mentally. Obviously there' s financial side to it all which I can't judge and is none of my business, but I feel so strongly about this after having seen just how much set up (and then I'm sure tear down) work you do, that I still thought I'd say/ask it even if I'm sure this is nothing new to you. Maybe just consider taking someone when an event is this big in scale of equipment and size ? (what a beautiful venue btw). Ok, sorry for all this length, I'll shut up now. Amazing job as usual. Cheers :)

Thank you for your time check this out and leave such a detailed comment. I appreciate your perspective and do think having an assistant is a big asset. I do bring assistants when I feel the job calls for it, otherwise I'm very independents and try and use gear that allows me to not have to always rely on people to help. I'm a control freak so its hard to find people that will put up with my "Type A" personality. LOL Check out this other gig log.... Thank you for taking the time to check this out! I really appreciate you time and kindness. Weddings are ALWAYS stressful but its a good stress ( most of the time). It keeps you on your toes and sharp. I'm blessed to have great gear that takes most the stress out of it. It's crazy to think of the responsibility we have on our shoulders. Everything has to work and be perfect...its the most important even of their life! So yeah....that does add some stress but if you can't have fun doing this, you're doing the wrong job! haha. I have a Honda generator for gigs where I need to bring power. I was looking into some battery backup options, but haven't pulled the plug yet. The MAUI 5 Go is a dope speaker and best there is for a batter option IMO.

@@DJRachelLynch As an IT guy as well, a UPS could be an option. But you would need a large one. 6000va Might get you 1hr at a stretch, but they weigh a ton and you would need to put it on its own trolley. And unloading it off the car is not something you could do. Would take 2 strong guys. So not really so practical. Alternatively you could fit out the rear of your SUV with a UPS system and then run a long cable to the outside location ?. Then when you get home you just plug the UPS back into the mains for a day to charge it up again.

One of the nicest venues I’ve ever seen with outdoor, patio and ballroom space. You are like the third DJ I’ve seen lately use the Evolve systems out side Looks like they worked out great. I can tell you worked really hard on everything and the results speak for themselves. Professional and personable. From the organized load in to all the small details including excellent cable management. I personally like the Both or facade look with the bigger spread apart speaker set up and think the the new DJ consoles like you have here looks better with the EV Evolve 50 system and a tighter speaker set up. However, your setup looked amazing. Very open and inviting to your guests. Great job!!

@@georgethedj4946 thank you for this incredibly nice comment. This venue is GORGEOUS, but as your heard its crazy difficult acoustically! I appreciate your but keen on and what goes into making these events happen! I do like the look of the EVOLVE50s better with this console! Since this was a bigger room I felt I needed more low end and to get the sound wide so I went with the ETX subs.

Great video! Hey, I see you have tops on subs. I'm considering doing this ASAP to get rid of tripods. Do you get consistent bass response through the room with the split subs? Reason I ask is I usually cluster the subs in the center, but as I said, it would be great to loose the tripods. I'm running QSC K10's with KS118 sub.
@DJRachelLynch
@DJRachelLynch 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct that coupling your subs (placing them together) will give you a much better result with bass response. Unless you separate the subs by at least 50 feet, you're not only sacrificing the advantages of acoustic coupling, you're also allowing them to cancel each other out in certain frequencies. The frequencies affected will depend on the distance between them, which is why you have to get at least 50 feet apart before the frequencies affected are no longer audible. HOWEVER…. Like me most DJs place speakers on top of subs for general aesthetics and symmetry. I hate tripods.Speaker placement in mobile applications is almost always a compromise in favor of other elements, most often being aesthetics, and working within the footprint allowed. Unfortunately, very few circumstances the wedding DJ finds themselves in are conducive to optimal acoustic scenarios, so in short we do what we have to do and usually have to find a balance. I will also say for most average events, splitting the subs is fine. I have two ETX 18” subs. They hit hard. My clients and their guests are experiencing plenty of low end. Nobody is complaining that there isn’t enough low end. At something like a prom or where maximize bass response is needed, I’d considering coupling them together. But I need the total package- for it to look and sound good in the space I have. It really about what your priority is and what space you have to work with.

Also can you list the wireless model number of The transmitter and receiver (Sennheiser) as well as the EV transmitter and receiver you used for the lapel mic, also will the EV handheld microphone work with same receiver or do I need a separate one. I want to upgrade my microphones. Do you mic up the bride and the groom i’ve been getting requests lately regarding that. Regarding the Chauvet Rotosphere what do you use to transport them. I’m having hard time finding a good protective case. I apologize for all the questions I’m asking. I love your set ups. Nice n clean. Only thing left for me to update is my microphone system.

The ceremony and reception mics are Electro-Voice RE3 units. The hand held I'm using for the grand entrance is a Electro-Voice ND96-RC3. The ceremony mic is is a bodypack (RE3 BPT) with a Electro-Voice (RE90Tx) lapel. The Sennheiser is a EW 100 G4-ME2. In this video only the "officiant" is mic'd up. That how good the mic is and the Electro-Voice 30M. Typically I only mic the officiant and let that lav pick up the couple. Hope this helps. The cases in the begining are SKB cases that come with the DJ Console I use. I don't know what modle they are. They came with the booth. For the rotosphere lights I purchsed some bags off of Amazon that fit the lights. I'd have to check the brand for you. But they were about $40 each.

Yeah, this place is beautiful but the acoustics are like DJing in a cave. haha. Very challenging. I don't think I'd ever place my subs together just for an aesthetic reason ( I understand coupling), but I'm big on not using speaker stands. I hate them. LOL! I either use my subs or Evolve the 50s. I also wouldn't want to block my new DJ console with big black subs. Ya know? I spaced my speakers out so that people on both sides of the room could hear the toasts and announcements. Maybe I'm incorrect in that thinking. I just feared keeping things tight would make it hard to hear anywhere else in this massive room. I felt the 50s were undersized for space so that is why I went bigger, but maybe their coverage pattern would have sounded better in that type of environmet. I'm not sure. Thank you for your time and advice. I appreciate your perspective on sound enforcement.

Sound first. Looks are second. No one but other djs care what speaker stands look like. People care about one thing…how were the music choices and did the dance lighting enhance it.
@DJRachelLynch
@DJRachelLynch 3 жыл бұрын
@@rjpimprov I don’t disagree about sound being the most important. I will also say presentation absolutely does matter, especially in premium venues like this. I always try to find a balance between form and function. I feel this venue, regardless of how the speakers were placed would still present a challenge and sound like you’re DJing in a cave. It’s just the way the room is designed and the smaller body count for a room this size didn’t help with the sound. My point with the speaker stands is not only are they unattractive and sometimes unsafe , but it’s extra stuff to carry. As a solo op, the more streamline the better. If I can make things look good and refine the process, I’m going to. That’s why I decided to do what I did. As you can see lighting made zero difference. The up lights are barely visible here and I didn’t bring any dance floor lighting. At the end of the day what matters most is did you play good music as you said. I think we all need to keep that in mind. 🙂 Thanks again for your time to talk sound. I appreciate your feedback.
@rjpimprov
@rjpimprov 3 жыл бұрын
@@DJRachelLynch I agree that in that place the speaker placement wouldn’t most likely matter. And the lights. Just saying…I use speaker stands both for lights and for speakers. And I do high end stuff. No one cares one bit. And they are safe and functional. And allow me to place the subs in the middle. Good looking set ups are well and good, but not at the expense of sound. But again, no one would most likely even know the difference. I see djs rocking 20 year old eons with no subs and that sounds horrible…the guests don’t have anything to compare it to. They don’t know the difference 🤷‍♂️🤣

And for a daytime venue like this, for dance lighting, I like to use the wash fx (they are good for day weddings…for night I point them up at the ceiling) and two wash movers ($200 each). Program preset dance scenes into vibrio…all battery powered dmx connections…clean look. Easy to set up.

DJ Rachel, great event by a great DJ. But I'm confused... I've seen your reviews of both Alto Stealth systems, but here you're using a Sennheiser G4 mic system. Guess I'll have to call Ben.
@DJRachelLynch
@DJRachelLynch 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg! Thanks for checking out both videos. I still have the Alto Stealth Pro. It is MUCH better than the first-gen, but it's NOT perfect. As with any UHF technology, it is completely environmental as explained in the video. I use the Stealth Pro at less formal events (not weddings) and when I need multiple wireless speakers. For the price, they work great, but there are absolutely better and more expensive options out there....like the Sennheiser. I ONLY use the Sennheiser at weddings. It's about double the price but I need that reliability during someone's wedding ceremony or cocktail hour. If someone needs a wireless solution on a budget the Alto Stealth is a great value and works well. But I will ALWAYS use the best option for the job. The Sennheiser is a better unit and it's all I use for my weddings. Each unit has its application. Hope that makes sense. E-mail me and I will let you know the "code." DJRachel@me.com

No. I wouldn’t think they would be appropriate for an event this size. This is why I brought a larger system that compliments my sound object. A room this size needs larger subs and bigger sound. Could they have worked, sure… but it’s about using the right speaker for the right job. It’s stilly to think a 12” sub would have the same presence a 18” sub will. The 50s are great for events up to 100/150 people in a reasonably sized room. Things like corporate events, holiday parties, smaller weddings, cocktail hour, retail stuff, athletic spots, etc.
