I recently purchased my first prime lens (the Canon 35mm f/1.4L II) and it's the only lens in my arsenal right now. The 35mm focal length is just amazing and versatile in almost every setting! Nice video, as usual, Julia! :)

Thankyou so much for this video. I have been tempted to do wedding photography for a while because people always tell me I am happiest when taking pictures. You show just how much hard work it is & yet I've never been more bloody tempted. I always love watching your videos, when I feel like I am losing my passion for photography (because of the expense) you always manage to ignite that passion again & make me realise that all this saving up, working overtime like a dog is going to be worth it one day. On the one hand, this gave me a lot of confidence with the idea of shooting a wedding. I very much have the same values and approach to prime lenses as you do, so it's great to hear someone on the same level. On the other hand, I'm a uni student that just scraped enough together to recently get his first full frame camera - a 6D MkII. To work up towards the gear you have is going to be a long financial journey for me haha. And I know it's not all about the gear, but the idea of having two cameras at the ready to switch between instead of constantly re-attaching lenses sounds like an absolute dream for your workflow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to such detail!

I LOVED how you told us in the beginning of the video (literally the first minute!) that prime lenses are more sharp than getting a zoom lens like the 24-70mm f/2.8L THANK YOU FOR THAT AWESOME TIP (I was low-key trying to save up for that zoom lens 🤣)

This was super helpful! I started doing weddings this past year and am loving the 35mm/85mm combo!

You certainly isolate your subject to perfection, I particularly like the name card and used the soft focus to direct your viewer. The night shots were truly awesome, any newly married couple would love them. I doubt many photographers have put the effort into knowing their lenses that you have. Awesome video as always.

I love my 24-70 but i'm leaning more to wards primes. I used a 24-70 and an 85mm. the 85mm is more diverse than I had imagined. I'm contemplating going for a 24, 35 50 and 85.

Can you do a tutorial on how you used the flash for the night photos please.

I’m not even gonna lie, you’ve shared a lot of valuable information along with examples. This is perfect!

Hey Julia. It's great you found a system that suits your workflow. Here's some food for thought though. I am a big guy and have no problems carrying heavy stuff, yet I find that carrying a set of prime lenses is really annoying to move and on a long day it's a waste of energy that can be used better. I'd rather carry 1 camera with a 24-70mm f/2.8 on it and an additional 70-200mm in a tiny shoulder bag to switch when needed. And use higher ISO and/or flash if needed. That's it. Feels much more comfortable to face long and fast paced events. Using zooms avoid the need of switching lenses constantly: it's annoying and makes you miss opportunities. And using a zoom should not prevent you from moving "to stay creative". Once you understand that "lens compression" is not about focal length but about your position relative to the subject and the environment that is creating the perspective, it just offer you the opportunity to have more coverage in a pinch. And on your argument about backup: you can have backup lenses of your choice where you left the rest of your stuff. It's a backup, it should be available but it's not needed to carry it. To sum up, of course everyone should work as they see fit. But the more I photograph, the more I find huge value in a light and simple setup of 1 (or 2) zoom, It's really one worry less and that frees me to concentrate on an already long list of other things: people, storytelling, coverage, lighting, composition, ...

Interesting, thanks. I have been toying with the idea of trying to shoot a wedding mostly on primes for a while but was missing the vital 35mm. Bought that and it really has made a difference to my work. I didn't 'quite' go all prime in the evening though and used a 70-200 for some of the table shots. It was quite a tight space and big open tables so wanted to isolate individuals as to get people talking across the tables looked too messy, but the rest was all primes. My back thanks you too, so much lighter!

Thank you for another superb video. Recently I have found myself using prime lenses more and more and this weekend, for the first time I am planning to go out without a zoom lens at all. Usually I take a standard zoom lens with me just in case there is a shot that would be more difficult with a prime, but you are right - not having that option will force me to think and come up with a more creative solution. I do feel a bit naked going out without a zoom though.One thing that did surprise me was that you often choose a combination of lenses with focal lengths that are quite close together - such as the 24mm and the 35mm or the 35mm and the 50mm. Before I watched the video I was expecting you to combine a wide angle with a telephoto - so from the lenses you have I was expecting you to choose the 35mm and the 135mm for example. That way you could take a group shot with the 35mm and then switch to the camera with the 135mm lens mounted to take a close up of one person. In practice do you find that there is a lot of difference between the 35mm and the 50mm and do you sometimes need to replace one of them with the 85mm or the 135mm during the shoot?

I plan to use more primes and less zooms in my events and weddings. It’ll keep me busier with more moving around and more lenses changes, but I think I’ll appreciate shooting with primes do to being f1.4 and f1.8, smaller in size and weight, just more fun to shoot with.

For budget: 24-70mm 50mm/85mm 70-200mm

It's great to have lenses at f1.2 for low light, but you also have to factor in the % of shots in focus at f1.2 as it has such a narrow dof. And shooting at 1.2/1.4 like a lot of wedding photographers do is great for isolating subjects but usless when you want more than one person in focus in the shot. I have primes at 1.8 which are great for weddings but I stick to my 24-70 as sometimes you're in a position where you need to zoom quickly or you miss the shot. I'd rather get the shot having used a pro zoom than having to shoot wide or in tight because I only have 2 primes.

Julia thank you for this video! I really like your perspective about prime lenses! They do have such a special quality too them. But... struggling because often shooting these days moving cows! They come in so fast, and then I am out of focus. Is it time to invest in a telescopic lens, or maybe I should try shooting with two cameras also. The thing is that if I get up out of my position in the tall grass, all the cows stop and move away. So it makes moving around not a great option. Thanks for this great video! You are great at sharing lots of details !

WOW!!! I got worn out just by watching you go through all those lens changes for one job. Another reason why I don't shoot weddings anymore video or stills. I do primarily shoot events, video and stills. For that I use a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 as my goto (for unclose and personal) and then I use the big boy Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 (for far and away) with a basic Lumix 12-60mm as backup. I find this to be the best and fastest kit for me for what I do. Mostly all the events that I shoot I must be very mobile and the action can happen at a pretty rapid unpredictable pace. Even with these my kit can weigh in at quite a bit especially by the end of the day. Prime lenses (when the job demands it) I use a set of Rokinon Cine DS lenses with the 35 and 85mm being my goto. Those are for a more planned out non event situations such as portraits, etc. Primes are the best to use but does not always fit in every job or environment. It is as always whatever works best for each individual and the specific jobs that they must do. So it can take a few cockups in order to get it right. Most important you learn what works best for YOU from experience.

Thank's for this video. I do prefer prime lenses to zooms too. But you say that you've chose them to move and get close to people ; and later you say that you use a 135 to stay far away and not to disturb... A zoom seems to be perfect to face all these situations. Personally I prefer prime lenses because they are lighter, faster and produce better images, in particular in low light.
