We had a pot luck that our church put together for us and skipped the music. It was a cheap wedding that fit our young adult budget and we don't regret it a bit!

If the 👰Bride & 🤵Bridegroom are spiritually on the same page✝️ and mutually decide to keep it simple and forgo big fancy wedding celebrations, then it is sorted. But for that their desire should not be on the things of World rather on the Glory of God🛐😇🙏

I’ve always wondered about this too and I thank Pastor John for the call for the young to magnify the Lord and love at 1/4 the cost of a normal wedding. I’ve also learned that nowadays weddings average $32,000! Don’t get me wrong, as much as I love going to friends’ weddings, I can’t help but wonder how much of that can go to bless our friends abroad who gave up their livelihoods to bring the Gospel to the unreached.

I took my bride and guests to McDonald’s. I got everyone ice cream too. Went back to work afterwards as it was on lunch break.

Mother wouldn't allow alcohol at our wedding mainly because my husband's father had just quit drinking. She wouldn't allow that temptation for him. Not having alcohol bothered so many other people on my husband's side though. Friends left early.

Same with my cousins wedding. Her side was pretty mad because our side does not drink at all

Yeah, in my opinion not having alcohol at your wedding is pretty rude (and I don't drink). It just seems like the couple is cutting costs and sacrificing their guests comfort.

@@annabelleland7318 that's a pretty entitled attitude. Beggars are not choosers.

@@annabelleland7318 I can see the point about making guests feel comfortable, but I think this kind of shows one aspect of the problem in the culture. The wedding isn't (or at least shouldn't be) about the guests; it's about the bride, groom, and Christ. When I go to a wedding, I'm not there primarily to enjoy food and dance (although if it's there I can enjoy it), but my main motivation is to help make sure the wedding goes smoothly for the couple and be with them to celebrate the joy of their union. To be like Christ, we should seek to serve, not be served. What kind of countercultural picture would that paint if instead of the couple being expected to provide a lavish party for their guests, the church rallied around them to help them make preparations for celebrating their marriage? This might be hard to understand for friends and family members outside of the church (and likely, at first, even some within the church), but I think this is why Piper was calling for couples to have courage in challenging the cultural norms.

@@LightDragon777 it’s also religious reasons for me. Jesus literally made alcohol at a wedding as a miracle. Wine plays such an important role in the New Testament and in Christianity, and with marriage a reflection of Christ’s relationship with us, it should be included. And serving can mean serving Christ, serving the bride and groom, and serving the community. The concept of the community having to pay for a wedding is a modern creation.

Here's my problem: Now days families are spread out across the state or even country or internationally. If you're going to ask your family to drive anything over an hour, possibly pay for a hotel, and they're going to get you a gift (whether you ask for one or not), it is common courtesy to provide them with at least a nice meal. I wouldn't feel comfortable asking my fiance's grandparents to fly in to Texas for a 1 hr event. There are things expected, like alcohol (even Jesus agrees with this one lol), having comfortable tables, chairs, etc in an indoor location (in case of bad weather or if it is too hot or cold), and those things cost money. Lots of money. Yes, just you and your groom/bride could go get married in the courthouse, but if we want a big event with our large families and friend groups to be present, money has to be spent to make people comfortable. I would feel like I was taking advantage of my family and friends if I invited them for my wedding and sent them away after the 30 min ceremony without a dance/party, nice meal, alcohol, comfortable seating/venue, etc.

What's really bad is if people cite the expenses of marrying as en excuse for fornication.
