This video is about getting a better understanding and look at the Wedi shower system.
There have been some that question if a sealant system will actually work. Find out how strong the Wedi joint really is and if you can rely on it for your shower.

So what was the official reason for the warranty not being honoured and what was the determined cause of failure? I have a WEDI shower room I have built and am more than curious to find out more about potential failure reasons.

Should subliner dry membrane tape be applied over the the joint after sealant dries? Wouldn't that solve the issue?

Major appreciation of you. The way you articulate yourself, and don’t “dumb down the science”. Makes me feel as the industry of tile might have a fighting chance. I love to learn all I can about the industry. Coming across these types of videos seriously gets my frustration up. Very few are capable of tile work do it themselves. And it’s a very expensive and frustrating thing for those who have failure. That also could be said for lower knowledge installers. I have tried to educate “you tubers” over the year. Most are very combative and closed mind. I hope you keep up the good fight.

Thank you for this rigorous application of critical thinking. I installed a Wedi shower in the house I was living in, in 2011. We used it for a few months before selling the house. I remember using Sikaflex (221 I think). It was gray like the current Wedi supplied sealant. I saw the other guy's video first and was wracked with worry that the people I sold the house to may have had a failed shower (that I proudly built). I followed the instructions to a T and after watching your video I regained my confidence in my work. I'm demoing my current bathroom and will be doing a Wedi Fundo shower. I like Wedi and my faith is now restored. 😂

I ran an water feature business along with general stone masonry and landscape for 22 years. We became the second largest Aquascape (the largest water feature supplier in North America) in North America. I am a Master Certified Aquascape contractor, so I have worked with literally miles of EPDM 45 Mil rubber liner. This is not foolproof either. You can puncture it during installation and cause a pin hole leak that would feet the rot. We also used sealers to clamp the rubber to the face of the skimmers. The one on my home pond is 25 years old and does not leak, but I made a living with multiple pond service trucks fixing leaks that were punctured. Overlaps are not the answer. Following the manufacturer's instructions to the letter is the key and making sure your joints are clean and dry does. Great video. I am installing my WEDI shower starting this weekend. I watched the negative video to the end and thought I might have blown my plans and money. What I would guess happened was the leak test was fine for the shower base, but the seal around the top of the seat leaked into the open area under the seat and weakened the floor which caused it to move which seperated the edge. Also might not have taken the dust off the rabbit joint. Thanks a lot for a thorough job.

Glad the KZfaq algorithm led me to your video to rebuke the video slamming Wedi. Excellent! I am still deciding on a system for a DIY bathroom renovation, but having worked with German engineers, actually on the first asphalt core dam in the US, I have a lot of confidence in their grasp of technologies for sealing applications. In fact, I find the US is way behind the curve accepting engineering innovations.

You did a wonderful job breaking down a particularly problematic video on Wedi pans. There are a variety of products, when used properly, that work really well. Great commentary and analysis. The one thing that I will comment on with regard to Wedi and Schluter shower pan products are the drain assemblies. I have never liked floating them in with mortar with no mechanical connections. I also use epoxy thinset when installing shower floor tile and epoxy grout to finish off the floor. Keep making quality content.

I'm thinking it's possible that the original tiler did not go all the way to the edge when applying the thinset underneath the shower pan, leaving air pockets all around the edges or parts of the edges with little or no support. When weight is applied in those areas it would seem as though it would compromise the connection from the space allowing it to be pushed downward from weight of a person using the shower, possibly breaking the seal holding Wedi's panels and shower pan together. Also if there is a dirt/dust layer in the edges while caulking it would also affect the adhesion results.

I just installed a Wedi shower. I think it's a great design! I can see how things can go wrong if installing and not paying attention to detail. Such as debris left in the rabbit cut.. or insufficient sealant. Also, the sealant being used is way too close to what International used to seal oil pans on the 444 engine..😊 you couldn't remove the pan without torches and chisels . The oil pan always needed to be replaced.. just a memory I had while working with the Wedi caulk sealant stuff..

My contractor wants to use a Kerdi shower floor and use Wedi for the curbs, the walls and the bench. Because he was supposed to use Kerdi everywhere but after purchasing the Kerdi floor he found out the remaining parts are out of stock from Kerdi. So now he wants to mix Wedi with Kerdi. Is this asking for disaster or is there a way to make this wok properly? Don’t know what to do?? He is assuring me they’re all the same and I shouldn’t worry. Comments please??

Hey Dick, It’s generally not a good idea to mix products. Wedi and Schluter are also two different styles of product and might not be the best to use them together. Your also voiding the warranty on both systems and I doubt the contractor is going to give you the same warranty under his responsibility. I would advise against this idea.

Even if your facts and analysis are far more rigorous and correct, I still find Ostrom's video that you're criticizing here to be far more useful. It'd be nice if his analysis of the failure were of higher quality, but there's simply no one out there doing that. I don't see how your conclusion itself is at all supported by your take down. Your final, "if he had bothered" statement, doesn't really make much sense. The pertinent guidance is that from the time of the original install, not guidance from today. I didn't go looking, but I'm guessing that WEDI doesn't provide a historical list of their installation guidance and updates over time. "Customer had shower installed by certified WEDI installer. Work appears to be fairly competent. Shower failed completely and WEDI denied any responsibility". Nothing you state here undermines that key takeaway. The idea that "something was done improperly with the bench install and that led to the overall failure" could make sense. But then what's the point of all the other criticism. Newer sealant, 1" on either side of the seam, or anything else would amount to nothing if the same thing happened today. As a customer, I'd still end up screwed. I actually like a lot about WEDI's product. I might have it put in myself at some point. That being said, I'm suspicious of the three-sided adhesion being shown for sealant in the floor to wall joint. It seems some type of membrane or something else would seem to be far more robust for that connection. At this point, I see no reason to trust WEDI's warranty at all. (which is probably par for course for most warranties).

I would definitely be interested in that report. The seat theory doesn't work for me as you can see it in the background tiles removed. Its not rotten. The bottom plate of the wall appears to be in fair/poor condition. The sub floor, joists, and band board are all trashed. The pan does appear to pull loose from the sealant fairly easily. Definitely did not take the 225lbs in your demonstration. Seemed to hold on to the wall really well. With the extent of damage it would probable be very difficult to determine root cause. I guess the biggest question is if a Widi approved contractor did the install what difference does it make what the cause was? They should stand behind the install.

I don't know if you solved anything, the prior video whose point seemed to be correct- looked like a polyurethane failure which caused extreme and extensive damage. I think it is something to consider if you got a Wedi install 10 years ago rather then saying, "Look I can hang from the Wedi bond it works!" and "99.9% success!" (Just look at the damage) It is more realistic to say things can still go wrong even with a certified install and warranty can be denied which is more useful then your point the KZfaqr used Google and Wikipedia.
@SgtZima
@SgtZima 2 жыл бұрын
If it was a polyurethane failure, then why did Wedi deny the warrantee? I think if anything, the video goes to show how Isaac makes claims based on little to no evidence. He doesn’t think sealant would stick to the Wedi surface because he rubbed it with his thumb or just has a hunch, based on nothing. I like Isaac, but some of his testing videos (like the red guard one) are just flat-out wrong.

I used to work with the Wedi Sealant (thr stuff their reps pushed) 10 years ago. It's the same stuff they use today. They might have had other recommended products, but the stuff we were pushed to use by US Wedi reps was a 3M product in a Sausage tube. Very resilient stuff. The material surrounding the glue always failed before the glue itself did.

Wedi makes great stuff. Clearly the install had issues, given the extensive water damage. It really is not a knock on the company or product. He has many videos including tests and failures. Bottom line, there are a lot of good products out there to make a waterproof assembly. Wedi, Noble, Laticrete, Mapei, etc. The list goes on. Apparently, this install was done by a Wedi Certfied tech yet the warranty was not honored? One may wonder how Wedi justified this? Personally, I really like Wedi subliner dry and their sealant. We've used them since about 2010. They work really well with mud beds, other foam walls (i.e. GoBoard, etc) and with Hydro Ban.

You didnt disagree with any of the failure statements he made. He called it caulk and you wanted to tear him appart for saying its caulk. Than you agreed that the terms sealant and caulk can be synonymous with eachother. The wedi book also uses the word "caulking" he even shows the book. Your "testing" is fresh brand new reformulated products. Not aged products that have been stressed and weathered for years. You are just tearing him apart for no reason. Why are you tearing him appart for determining that an approved caulk failed. No good contractor would rely on a caulk joint for permanent waterproofing. Even if they refer to it as "sealent"

You sound more like a lawyer than a tradesman. Put the installer before the court, he would convey that he did everything by the book. And the bottom line would be…a "Wedi certified" installer did the job, it failed and water damaged occurred. BTW, your explanation of water damage- bacteria, fungus, glucose and pixy dust, was a great job of pivoting. You should consider a career in politics. Instead of arguing this to death, a good damage control team would have worked with the home owner and honor their guarantee. This way home owner is happy and future consumers would have confidence in the product and the company behind it. So all this "science" did nothing for positive public relations.

I saw the delamination and the true lack of engineering with this product. As you are suggesting that the home owner and inspector of the issue was not forthcoming, but in fact the delamination was the whole issue and the cause of the leakage. You suggest that there was riot already and the floor riot along with the truss riot was the dynamic shear. You would be wrong. The delamination was not due to shear from the structure. If it were then there would be parts of the sealant still on the Rabbet joint. That is where your argument losses all it's validity. It is not a well engineered product at the rabbet joint. By the way as you so foolishly put science and engineering as not common or sense; and also not being common or sense the nature of things in the physical world is that you suggest that logic is not of the nature of common or sense. What happens in the real mean physical world is studied and has a logical process always. If you live in another dimension then maybe what is real in this universe could be considered not common or sense if it is logical. What you are really saying is that if it doesn't work for you in your mind then it isn't common sense and that nature has no logic from your common sense prospective. You are wrong. You suggest you understand what is really going on and all you are is wrong. Living in your own diluted reality.

The only problem is, you are relying on a monolithic joint. Hopefully your installer takes their time and gets it right. The constant complaint in the industry is the lack of qualified installers. Videos like this fail to realize that. Sure, in a lab, this is a slam dunk. But does anyone want to rely in this when it is not "idiot" proof? Having to file a warranty claim sucks.

Even though polyurethane is waterproof and weatherproof, if it's left in an area with high humidity levels or temperatures of more than 122° Fahrenheit (50° Celsius), the material will degrade. It should be kept away from these conditions to ensure that it lasts for as long as possible. I would guess that you wouldn't want any failure on your grout if used under tile in a shower. I would guess that 122 degrees might be found near the sealant as would someone expect to understand the humidity in a shower. some people love to take long showers but I can tell that you are one of those people that takes only a long enough shower to wash you nasty aass and anyone that takes long showers is some kind of problem anyway in your fools reality.
