Houston Gamblers vs Los Angeles Express "Greatest Game No One Saw"
Week 1 - Sunday, February 24, 1985
Attendance: 18,828
TV: None (Coach's cameras)
The date was February 24, 1985, a battle between Jim Kelly’s Houston Gamblers and Steve Young’s Los Angeles Express, at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
Originally, ABC Network was supposed to broadcast this game for the opening weekend of the USFL’s third season. Instead, the network decided to switch gears and show Doug Flutie’s first pro game, which left the Express with no TV coverage.
A couple of coaches cameras were setup in the stands of the Coliseum to record some of the plays as well as provide the network with highlights. There was no audio whatsoever recorded, as these were just coaches tapes to study later.
The game you are about to see, not only, did it not have any sound, there were no graphics, no game clock and not very many close up action shots of the players in regular speed. Most were shown in replays because again, this was not setup for a normal football broadcast.
Producer Frankie Rosario added as many detailed graphics as possible and edited together all the available close up shots of the game. Once he had located the game audio, the race was on to finish the video.
John Greer who called the game thirty years ago, along with Ed Biles, had recorded their voices on gameday. They were on cassette tapes for demo purposes. Those recordings recently were discovered and given to Anthony Nunez, a Houston Gambler historian. He has since given permission to the producer of the “USFL Forever” KZfaq Channel, for use of the audio.
Now, we must make you aware, John and Ed didn’t record the play by play for the entire game. There were 62 minutes of missing audio that needed to be filled in. To compensate for this, the producer provided the play by play where John and Ed did not.
Finally, there was some game footage that due to severe video distortion could not be shown. You will though, see graphics at the bottom of your screen explaining what happened on the that particular play.
Most of the game is intact and edited to the best quality possible. Make sure to watch the game in 720P HD. Just go to your settings on the KZfaq Player and you can set it from there.
I wanted to make it broadcast quality. This project was over 150 hours of man power all by myself, as well as 1500 graphics, 8 voice overs, crowd sounds, etc.. The "Did You Know" segments were added for some trivia fun.
We hope you enjoy it.

Jim Kelly threw 575 yards in this game. Fun Fact: Kelly would beat Young in the NFL as well 34-31 in their other meeting in a game where it was no punts in San Francisco nearly a decade later.

Super Bowl results are the most important. As in Steve Young 🌱 won his. Jim Kelly lost all four times.

I see the USFL seen Marino's greatness better than the NFL.I still can't believe Eason, Blackledge, O'Brien, etc were drafted ahead of Danny Boy. I'm an Elway fan so they did get that right. 😁

Yeah but Marino used the USFL as leverage to get a high paying NFL contract. The Dolphins knew they would be losing him to the Express who drafted him in the first round as their 1st pick.

@@humbleastheycomefuckingwit8352 yes indeed. I tell people I would have been a Colts fan if he would have played there. He and his father didn't like the head coach at the time. He was way too conservative. Frank Gans maybe??? I forget at the moment.

@@chrissnyder3430 Yeah, it was Frank Kush. Marino's dad wasn't alone, NOBODY liked Frank Kush. An old school asshole who was super hard to like. He was a legendary coach at Arizona State that's one of the reasons why people put up with him. When you're successful people will put up with you just a bit more.

The announced crowd for this game was 18,828. However, according to the book Football for a Buck, the actual crowd had to have been less than 10,000. The book claimed that the first 10,000 fans were going to receive a free Steve Young poster. Not all of the posters were given away.

Correct! Actually it was around 7800. The fake LA football fans gave up on on the Express after the 83 season. Thats when their attendance dropped. I always hated that LA has so many sports teams but don't deserve them bc unless they are winning they dont come.

@@USFLForever Man, I'm glad that you be taking LA "fans" to task for their fakeness towards sports teams here. Me, I'm in love with the Chargers (since '93) even when they lose (I watched just about that entire game this past Thursday where they lost 63-21 to the Raiders).

The run and shoot roll out. A lot of choice and option routes then. Running plays are usually dives and draws. Otherwise, you will see a bunch of quick hitting throws. The negatives are it's not a clock killing offense or much a goal line or short yardage attack. The summary of the RNS offense.
