BRStv - Saltwater Aquariums & Reef Tanks

Күн бұрын

It's Week 46 of BRStv's 52 Weeks of Reefing, and this week we are offering you an update on the #BRS160, in addition to discussing a great insurance policy for your tank: The Seneye Reef Monitor.
It’s been about 8 weeks since we added all of our corals. All of the SPS corals are doing extraordinarily well. Most of them have completely encrusted over the epoxy to mount them and then some. And many are already sprouting off new branches. Coloration on the small frags is awesome and most consistently have their polyps out. In six months to a year I think we are going to see them transform into some pretty impressive colonies.
So follow along and let us know your thoughts in the comments area down below!

Congrats, Ryan! I, myself, am partial to unique, but not ridiculous, names. For example, my daughter's name is Lilianna, and my oldest son's name is Jaydan. I am also partial to Hispanic-style names, but where her family is Greek, you may want to lean that way.

My LFS had a PAR meter he loaned to folks but the last person never brought it back. I'm going to start a new tank build as soon as we get moved into our new place. The seneye is now on my wishlist for PAR and help with knowing how the tank is cycling. Thanks for the info, I love this series. Ryan congrats on the baby. Boy or girl and love to know the name.

My Seneye has saved my tank on two seperate occasions now. Once when my heater stuck on and once when, for some reason I never figured out, my PH crashed from 8.2 to 7.1, it sent me an Email to alert me and let me deal with the problems. Good luck with the new baby. Life will never be the same. From now on your house will smell of poop and spoiled milk. Enjoy!

Congratulations ... great news! Loved the video too, including the heads up on Trochus snails and the reminder about PAR. I've been struggling with diatoms for the last month, probably because I have my Kessil 160 set with too much intensity. FYI, my tank is 14 months old and stable with SPS, LPS and Palythoas that are doing OK, but I know could do better. Thanks!

Another great video, hard to believe there is only 6 left. I truly hope you get signed on for season 2! A note on the elegance coral. I have never personally attempted them, but the few people I know who have been successful with them, they are kept in more "nutrient rich" water. Think in terms of a soft coral tank. I still cannot see putting out the money for the Seneye when I am already building an Apex (now classic). The one feature Apex does not have is Ammonia monitoring. But I do use the Seachem Ammonium tab. Just hard to justify the additional cost on top of everything else. Hopefully Neptune will read this. Regarding names, I prefer classic traditional names. My kids are Johnny, Alex, Sebastian and Patrick. You just can't go wrong with a traditional name. Sorry if it is not exciting.

Hi guys I have been away so I just caught up with this episode. I was the same thinking about the seneye system but after running it for 4 months it's worth the money. I set my LEDs to a lower intensity thanks to the par sensor and it updates every 30 minutes so that's 48 ph and nh3 tests a day

I have been really interested In the SenEye ever since it first came out. It seamed a way better value than the Apogee MQ-200 for par measurement. Way more feedback (PAR, PER, LUX, Kelvin Temp) for about half the price. I was sold on its capabilities, even before you tested it against your $2700 meter. My only gripe is that it needs to be plugged into a computer. If I had a laptop, I would have purchased a SenEye years ago. I wish it could hook directly to a phone or tablet and run on a SenEye app. Instead, I would need to buy the SenEye web server for an aditional $180 (or more for WiFi), which brings it to the price of the Apogee :-( You guys gave me unintentional false hopes at 9:17 when I saw the shot of Ryan using the SenEye with the cord appearing to be coming out of the tank and going to his phone. Upon closer inspection, I realize that the cord is not going to his phone, and he is using a browser to access the SenEye server. Bummer. Please let me know if there is some solution I haven't thought of.

OK, so I purchased one of these. I am missing something for sure. The PAR meter was no where near the same as the Quantum PAR meter. It reads twice the PAR. So since BRS is touting this PAR meters accuracy, I would love to see a video on exactly any set up or instructions needed to accurately use the meter.

Thanks for the coverage on Seneye, I'm new to the Hobby and just ordered one so I can keep tabs on the cycling and in the future use the PAR meter. I do have a problem with how expensive the slides are and with the fact that the Web server is a rip off, I'm an IT guy and have a spare router with USB ports that I plan to add to the network to enable the use of usb over the network, I hope this works because I love the idea...I just don't love the Web server add on that you pretty much need for the appeal of this thing (alerts) they really should have made this connect directly to your wifi network out of the box instead of dealing with the usb mess.

Will do, one question in case anyone here knows..how high will it measure ammonia? I know the theoretical free ammonia is measured up to .05 ..but I ask because I"m going to do a fish less cycle with ammonia and I"m told to keep the levels around 2-5ppm..but my red sea kit only goes up to 2..I was hoping the Seneye could measure the total ammonia to at least 5?

Were the Elegance corals from Indonesia? I couldn't quite tell from the video but they looked like they could be & I find that these are the ones which can be hit or miss in an aquarium. So the Seneye, how good is the actual spectroscope functions? And what is colored graph representing? I see a line graph moving but not the other, is it just showing you how sensitive the sensor is to various wavelengths? One last bit, how accurate is that ammonia monitoring? Ever do any tests like throw a few silversides in the sump and see if it actually records the "dead fish"

Just installed my Senei bought from BRS last night. I think it's a good value. I compared the PH and temp readings against my Apex Jr (already properly calibrated ph and temp probes) and found the ph readings the same but the temperature on the Senei is off by like 3 degrees (Apex at 79 and Senei at 76 degrees Fahrenheit). What I'm really going to use it for is for PAR so I don't mind.

I have had a seneye since they came out and i have to say at first it was a great unit for reading the ph and No's and using for par.....but, after a while it seems like the slides are getting very poor in construction or quality control. The slides about half way through their life start to give crazy readings that my 2 manual test do not validate. The other thing is where are you purchasing them for 11$ I purchase them and they are a lot more than that a slide. I have also had the head unit replaced by the company trying to fix this issue to no avail...I have the seneye base unit as well so I have the whole package....I hope to hear back from somone about its accuracy as I have given up on using it to check my tank....too many false alarms.

Back in week 39 (feeding corals), you presented a report (Coral Farming: Effects Of Light, Water Motion and Artificial Foods). Basically, it showed that , "Effects of light, water motion and food were in some cases species-specific: P. compressa appears to grow best in bright light regardless of supplemental feeding, whereas M. capitata and P. damicornis showed significant growth in response to some (but not all) artificial foods, and M. capitata tended to grow faster at lower light levels. Strong species-specific effects imply that corals are adapted to specialize on a particular niche in a highly heterogeneous environment. " [www.researchgate.net/publication/229089024_Coral_farming_Effects_of_light_water_motion_and_artificial_foods] In layman's terms, this study is interesting to the aquarium hobby because it might not be so obvious how one coral might react very differently from another coral or other corals in the same aquarium, even though they're all SPS. Why am I bringing this up now? Because concerning the light portion of the equation, if a lighting manufacturer got smart and included a preset on their device, tailored to a specific coral's lighting requirements, it would alleviate the need for a PAR meter. Moreover, now that controllers are using software, it's not far off to think that there could be a wizard where the aquarist inputs the species of coral or the mix of species of coral (as well as other factors like tank depth and installed fixture height) and the light adjusts itself to the optimum intensity and spectrum based on the information it was given. Like the report mentioned above, if optimum light parameters were well known for each species of coral, species specific presets could be programmed. (Or maybe a PAR meter would still be required to properly set each coral.) Then it wouldn't be guessing anymore. Install the light, input the correct info and the light presets itself with the only thing left to do is maybe a little tweaking. For example you mentioned you're having trouble with your elegans right now. Anyway, you see where I'm going with this. There should be some kind of preset / database to help with setting up the LED lighting.
@RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery
@RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Yeah you're definitely correct about other factors (flow requirements, water turbidity/clarity, etc...) and that lighting is probably lower on the totem pole of importance. Still, I just feel pretty sure that a single LED fixture could be designed to accommodate multiple coral species at different heights, if coupled with the correct software. I don't say that even if this existed, it would solve every issue in any reef tank but I think it could make the lighting portion much easier for the hobbyist to deal with. I commented about this aspect (lighting) because I saw your series about using a PAR meter and how the correct lighting using only our eyes doesn't yield proper results compared to the PAR meter. I see a kind of wizard in the software, where information on species and frag size then depth and any other info input in the wizard to set up the LED fixture. I see this as possible because an LED lighting fixture is made up of many individual LED's. Since that's the case, the individual LED's could be controlled individually to have the appropriate intensity for different corals at different heights in different areas of the tank for the individual LED clusters directly over each coral. This is way more complex than would be possible for the human eye. Ultimately, we can go back an forth about it all day long without reaching any solid conclusion because nothing exists like that right now. Honestly, I'd be curious to know if there is any effort like this going on with any of the the lighting manufacturers presently. IMHO this is the next logical evolution to LED lighting fixtures. Just my 2 cents :).

BulkReefSupplyCom thank you so much for replying I'm sure you guys get a lot of questions.... There's only 1 timer for the sunrise/sunset, when you say have that light on, on both sides do you mean within the 4-5 hrs of daylight? or 2 hrs before and then start the 4-5 hrs daylight? And if you did mean to turn on sunset/sunrise before and after the daylight... which isn't possible, then what would you recommend? If I run the sunrise/sunset light for 8 hrs and turn on the daylight for 4-5 hrs in the middle of those 8hrs of sunrise/sunset is that too much? Or is that what you meant in the first place? Sorry for the long inquiry, and thanks again

I honestly cant see why an aquarist that has lps or sps corals wouldn't have a light meter.

Point of clarification: The PAR meter function of the Seneye monitor is a $60 upgrade in addition to the base cost. Still way less expensive than the meter, but still.......

Holy Cow Batman! I did't even try the PAR meter, I just ordered the upgrade......I hope I can get a refund :) On a side note, Have you noticed a difference in the pH readings between the Apex and your Seneye? I have calibrated my Apex probe and it reads pH of 7.84 when my Seneye with a fresh chip reads 8.18- I like the Seneye reading better, but I did just calibrate the Apex myself.....????

There is a "trim" function on the Seneye, so you can adjust the values up or down to meet a standard. You have to access it from the web server app- not the seneye.me viewer. It still varies a little from the Apex probe but not nearly as much.

Only if Seneye could've been somehow connected to my Apex Jr, so fusion could turn off the (ATO/Kalk) if PH got too high, then I could totally justify buying it.

So the seneye dosnt give a par reading on the unit itself? I saw you looking at the phone. It also isnt blutooth unless you buy the webserver right? How would I use the par meter with out it? I just bought one from you guys and havnt figured it out yet since I am so computer ilerate! haha. My tank is close to my computer so maybe i can read the screen from the computer. Is that what most people do if they dont have the webserver? To think I almost bought an apex...haha. No way would I ever figure that out! I dont even use my cell to go online, its just for ph calls and some texts here and there..lol I am starting to understand more and more why there arent many women reefers...haha. Especially ones my age and over half a century plus one decade old..haha I am really hoping I am not burning all my new frags. They seem to be doing fine but I have them all on the bottom and wanting to move them up! I cant even clean my sand there are so many new ones!

The Seneye doesn't have a built-in screen, so you'll need to plug it into a computer/laptop or use the web server.

@@BRStv Hope you can do a revisit on the Seneye because many people report PAR values twice as high nowadays. See: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNSAn9V8nKjXlo0.html Looks like Seneye changed the sensor with a crappy one or introduced a firmwareupdate which messed up the readings. We don't know what's going on.
