We didn't incorporate the saints because we thought Catholicism "worked". First of all we HAD to accept Catholicism, we had no choice if we wanted to keep breathing. Secondly, because christianity is so intolerant of other beliefs the only way we could keep our traditions alive was to disguise them. Therefore, when we say a Catholic saint that had the same attributes as an Orishas, we pretended outwardly to be venerating that saint when in reality we were venerating the Orisha. Best know example is Santa Barbara whose is associated with an incident involving thunder and lightning and wears a red and white robe. Chango's colors are red and white and he manifests in nature through thunder and lightning. So we pretended to pray to Santa Barbara, but in reality we were venerating Chango.

So deres nothing to argue about, go to Tridad & Tobago, Cuba, Brizil, Mexico, iv cost, Ghana, Cotonou, Togo, you will meet Yoruba tradition, culture n Kings there..

Kind of sounds like eugenics there. This sounds bad coming from a white guy, but if this isn't a joke I think you should consider not deciding one group is superior to another. The outcome of that is never good.

Absolutely you're right. The narrator or present should correct Himself. And another correction is that EKO (Lagos) is not Yoruba land but the Land belonging to Benin Oba (Edo). Although is far over look to be part of Yoruba land via British government, following their punitive expedition in 1987. The Benin (Edo) are yet to address and take full ownership of the Land.

great video although the king in this picture is not an Alaafin but a former Deji of Akure. please ignore a lot of the ignorant and hateful people in the comments. i'm a yoruba historian and this is although not a super work it is definitely a decent history of Oyo

D only first class yoruba king known to history is d alafin of Oyo who happens to b d second son of oranmiyan while the oba of Benin is d first son of oranmiyan, d ooni is a priest assigned by d alafin of oyo to take care of oduduwa shrine in ife not to sit on oduduwa throne bcos he's not worthy to sit on it as he does not have d blue blood of oduduwa,,oranmiyan happens to b d heir to oduduwa throne while d oba of Benin is d heir to oranmiyan, oduduwa is d heir to ogiso throne in Benin ,,d throne in which d oba of Benin sits on,ogiso had only one son named oduduwa, oduduwa had 7 children out of which d first two are girls and oranmiyan is his third child and first son making him his heir according to tradition,,oranmiyan first gave birth to eweka in Benin before he went to Oyo ,therefore eweka is d first son of oranmiyan before oranmiyan gave birth to d second alafin of Oyo who is his second son,,,d Yorubas sees oduduwa as a God but the Edo's know he is not a God but the son of ogiso,,after oranmiyan left Benin he couldn't stay in ife bcos his father (oduduwa) was still alive nd he can not leave in the same palace with another king after sitting on d ogiso throne in Benin, so he left for Oyo and bcam d first alafin of Oyo,,upon d death of oduduwa he (oranmiyan)was called back to became d king but he declined on d ground dat he was already a king in Oyo and so he asked d slave priest(ooni) to take care of d shrine in ife,,upon d death of oranmiyan his second son was crowned d second alafin of Oyo and he also declined going back to ife on d ground dat d ife throne does not belong to him but belong to his fathers first son (Oba of Benin) who was already sitting on a more ancient throne in a more developed city (benin ),,and so d ooni lineage continued as keeper of d shrine but never sits on d oduduwa throne,,,,,,from dis little explanation I have to say d Oba of Benin is more higher and mightier dan any Yoruba king,,

Oduduwda was not the son of any Ogiso of Benin,according to the Yoruba history Oduduwa has no relationship with Benin.As long as the Oba of Benin got his crown from Ile Ife and Oba system of government was brought to Benin from Ile Ife,the Ooni of Ife is higher than the Oba of Benin.Oranmiyan was the first Alafin of Oyo not his second son and his son Eweka whose name was corrupted from Yoruba words OWO MI KA was the first Oba of Benin and that indicates the Alafin is greater than the Oba of Benin .The Ooni was not placed on the thrown by the Alafin,the Ooni was placed on the thrown by Oduduwa because before he died non of his children were around,he instructed he Ooni to be king after him before he died.Ooni has been the chief preist before the death of Oduduwa and he has been taking care of the shrine before the death of Oduduwa because he was the chief priest during the reign of Oduduwa,the Alafin did not instruct the Ooni to be taking care of the shrine,The Edo people knows nothing about Oduduwa, your stories have no evidence of the truth.you people are story fabricators for real

You are not the one who will place the Yoruba kings in their category .The Yoruba people knows the kings who are first class or second class kings among their kings,so stop making fool of yourself.Three Yoruba kings are above the Oba of Benin in every aspect

The regalia.made of bead work is not a masquerade 😢 but an Akure(a Yoruba kingdom) 's Royal kingship Regalia worn by the late Deji (Akureland Oba) Oba Ademuwagun Agunsoye Adesida 11 (CFR) 1957-1973. He was an accomplished British trained Barrister at law before his enthronement which took place after the death of his referred old father HiM Oba Olofinlade Afunbiowo Adesida1 Oldest Oba in his time being a bit over 120 years old and known for his great understanding, knowledge, wisdom and kindness.

Any Obas (Kings) that carry the staff (Ada and Eben)are Benin's affiliate and at this time the Akures still have a strong ties with the Benin Empire. At a time, Akure was Benin s some of them still speak mix of Benin language.

Eggungun is not an Orishas. The Eggungun are the ancestors. But you are right in that we do not have any concept of exclusivity and will and have incorporated other practices from various regions. For example the Orishas Ogun who represents iron smithing, technology etc is originally from the Congo region.

The Orishas are not gods. They are emissaries of god the creator who is O-LO-DU-MA-RAY who each represent forces or the energies of nature. They all answer to the creator and cannot act without the permission of the creator. Interestingly, they are also bound by the wishes of a person's ancestors and so before any ceremony can begin the ancestors are venerated first.

@@TRUTHTEACHER2007 Luckumi are the Yoruba people in Cuba,they are called Luckumi instead of Yoruba,their ancestral home is Ile Ife.Aya Ilu,Emi Odo are all words in Yoruba language.Oshun is also a Yoruba word and the river Osun is also in Oshun state in Nigeria.Now I know why all these words are also used in your side of the world.The Luckumi people are Yoruba people originally from Ile Ife,they always come to Nigeria to celebrate Oshun festival and other Yoruba festivals in Ile Ife every year.Let us keep in contact bro

There are proves that the Yoruba kingdom is greater and the expansion of Yoruba kingdoms can be traced to other parts of Africa,but you Benin people have no traces of your expansion.The Ife people brought greatness to Benin and Ife was far greater before Benin,the greatness of Benin did not start before the era of Obaship,the greatness of Benin started from the era of obaship.During the Ogiso time Benin was nothing until the Yoruba people brought Obaship to Benin with Oranmiyan.You can only hear about great Obas not great Ogisos.Up till this present moment Yoruba kingdom is greater and it spread all over Africa and Yoruba people are also speaking and demonstrating Yoruba cultures in all these other African countries.There is no where in the world or in any other African county where they are speaking Benin language or demonstrating Benin culture apart from Benin.So you can not compare Yoruba kingdom to Benin kingdom.Greater is the Yoruba kingdom without no doubt.There is nothing to argue about ,it is crystal clear

Greatness is got to do with things like expansion and other achievements,it has nothings to with Spain and Portugal.Expansion of a land is part of greatness.We can locate the expansion of the Yoruba kingdom to other parts of Africa but the expansion of the kingdom of Benin can not be traced to anywhere in Africa

Chief who was the OGISO Owodo of Igodomigodo Chief and ask oduduwa to come back to Benin but he was Old and he can not longer it again so he send his Son to go with them to his Father THRONE in Benin Kingdom.. What a foolish man you are narrating the great benin empire as a the oyo empire. The birth of benin is not a kingdom but an empire. The benin grew into an empire in the 15th century. The first notable empire in the western and southern part of africa and its empire grew past modern day ghana. Lagos has a high concentration of yoruba but are not the owner nor a yoruba conquest or state. Please research you information before talking about kingdoms and empire.

SportzNews no I disagree with you sir, first Benin was great up until the 15th century at the same time the Oyo empire came into existence. It is true that Benin Empire expanded to Ghana however they didn't stay in this places or migrate there so to say because if they did in this modern world we should be seeing Benin culture and people in this places. However your ancestors left and these places enjoyed peace for a while until Benin younger brothers lol ( Yorubas) came and recolonised them. (God lol what a double jeopardy) then Yoruba people due to their high popular they expanded and spread to Togo Ghana and Benin

In respect of Lagos let me correct your assertion, just like Weydah and other Fon regions of Dahomey was colonised so you did with Lagos and you named the place Eko. You guys didn't have interest in Lagos because you only used it as military garrison and trading post with the Portuguese lol. But come to think of this, is it possible to meet such area of land empty in the 14th century? Without people living there? Nah it's impossible if you have a contrary report from a good source I will believe you. But your ancestors met the Awori people in Lagos and you guys colonised them. The aworis own Lagos till today. Check people that control their economic I mean families forget about the politicians o. They are the natives and the returned slaves from Liberia. So don't say Benin own Lagos when only you have is the Colonial name you gave it. Now that name is even now termed as Yoruba name lol. So you want to say since the Portuguese also name Eko as Lagos back then means Portugal owns Lagos? Please sir this is 21st century nobody own anything again. Lagos is a cosmopolitan city everybody owns Lagos. If you live and make money here it's yours.

Oramiyan son Eweka founded the Benin kingdom. Oramiyan named it ile ibinu which the Portugese corrupted to Benin. So keep quiet and make good research

Ogidan Akinyemi, It's quite clear given our histories and artifacts of our peoples where they are similar and where they are different. The specification and brilliance of what came out of O'dua is far superior and much more lifelike than any art, excepting Egypt in Afruca! Also there is no way without war that the Edo people would allow a Yoruba King to take head as the ruling class amongst its people if there was not a respect and deference paid to the higher culture. Just saying. Also in the geography within and outside of Nigeria there is no other group of people's having a larger influence on its neighbours than the Yoruba. The Edo themselves for one, The Igala, Itsekiri, Esan Fon The Nupe, The Ijaw, the Ewe, The Ashanti, Ga, the list goes on, but let's move to the Americas, Brazil, USA, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago,Venezuela, Mexico, Panama .....is this enough for you all revisionists folk who have been so jealous of who we are that now from the late 80s you have vastly adjusted your story.....not good enough at all.

The Benin kingdom is older than Ile ife kingdom... The Benin kingdom didn't come from Ile Ife. Everything about Ile Ife is a lie.. Oduduwa is a human being and not from heaven. The Oyo Empire is the true origin of the Yoruba...

Oyo empire and Benin Empire are both older than ile Ife.. The only thing great about ile ife was their affiliation with Benin and nothing else. It is no home to no art and culture. It was home to nothing and that was why the kingship ended before. Ooni is not a son of Oduduwa. He was the chief priest who became king.. So where is the continuation of Ile Ife's greatness when the people that started the kingdom didn't see any need to continue it.

This is the exact story the Yoruba people are leaving on illusion. Up till now they still believed that Oduduwa came from the sky and descended down with a chain from heaven. What a fallacy and you want the world to believe that?
