Girl if it makes you feel better I’m 34 and I’m not even the older person in my calculus class. There’s like 3 people in their 40s and 50s. You’re never too old to learn something new and better yourself.

Ok, this is my advice from a med student. Do NOT fake understanding something the teachers are there to help you learn. You weren’t in school for a while and these people have probably not even taken a break after high school so they’re more in the flow of things and have stuff fresh in their minds. Also people lie, you might look around and everyone can be “understanding” but they’re just faking it. keep pushing and don’t let yourself get sad about the small things. One of my professors would always say, people who graduate aren’t smarter than others. They just didn’t give up and thats the difference.

As a freshman college professor, I can tell you that you are never the only one to “not get it.” Most often than not only a handful of students understand right away. A great majority pretend in fear they will look bad. So if you “pretended” chances are a lot of others did, too! Your stresses are completely valid but please don’t beat yourself up. I tell my students, “we go to school to learn NEW things.”

You’re not alone. Sometimes I just pretend to know what’s going on, while feeling inside like ‘If I can just get through this class, I’ll somehow figure it out.’ (It usually feels worse than it really is.) But hearing you say you pretended to get it at first, makes me think the next time I am in a class where it seems like everyone else is understanding everything, maybe I’m not the only one feeling lost and just trying to keep up. It really helped me to hear your experience with this. ♥️

The first time I ever took Chemistry I was always lost too, I failed with a D. I had to retake the class and then ended up with an A. You can do it!!! Sometimes it’s the way they teach it. You just need someone who knows how to explain good.

I’m in my first semester of college at 24 years old after I dropped out of high school my senior year. Even during my zoom class I have all these feelings resurfacing from high school. It will probably get easier, but I think that even if it doesn’t, we can do this.

Omg me too!!! I HATED chemistry in high school! The moles part was excruciating. I never got it. I don’t remember how i got through it but I totally relate. I finally graduated a couple months ago and once you are holding that diploma in your hands, you feel sooo proud of all the hard work you put in and literal blood, sweat, and tears... its so worth it girl. I struggled with chemistry in college too. I don't use it at all in my career but I still had to take it as an engineering major. I had so many times where I doubted myself and felt like I wasn't cut out for it but I made it to the end and you will too! Once you graduate and make it to your career field GPA doesn't matter at all, at least in my experience. I'm just as competent as everyone else at work and that's all that matters. It was so nice to see you thriving in the lab :)

Going into my major, I didn’t realize how chem based it was and I would cry almost every other day because it never came easy to me and I would always have to ask my lab partners for extra help. It got to the point where I was about to drop out bc I had to stay an extra year for failing only my chem classes. I eventually stuck it out and now I’m working full time in a job that I love :,) you got this girl!

I took chemistry many years ago in college. I was the same way with conversions. Ended up switching my major and didn't need chemistry anymore and dropped it halfway through. I am also older than my peers currently being in my 30's. The only good part about that is I have more real world experience to bring to discussions.

i love all the lab stuff! i have a phlebotomy degree and those labs were just us drawing blood and learning the tests/tubes. but i was a nursing major (now radiology) and we had to take anatomy and microbiology which is obviously all about the human body and all about bacteria/viruses/infectious diseases....all my favorites! so awesome!

I felt the same way with chemistry ❤️ it’s so hard and it’s annoying that any biology based degree has some chemistry in there! It put me off doing a biology related degree because I tried and tried but could never wrap my head around chemistry. I’m glad you managed to grasp it in the end!!

Hi Megan! I completely understand what you're going through since I was and still are in your shoes. I'm a Physics and Geology double major and I've definitely had many situations where I doubted myself. I'm graduating next year and one piece of advice I have is that if you don't understand a concept, never pretend you understand it. You are literally paying for professors to teach you the content. Also, they know when you lie about understanding what they're trying to teach you. Over the past year, I've worked closely with some professors on research and they would tell me stories about how students lie to them a lot about understanding the material and that they wish the students would just be honest about it. I don't think anyone goes into academia because they hate helping people. They do it because they love what they do (usually) and want to help people who are passionate about the same things they are. Sorry about the lengthy comment. You're definitely good enough!
