That concert was nuts. I saw a documentary and that day he was worried that no one would show up. Well, at one point, shortly before the show they told him "an hour and 1/2 ago the best guess is there were 850,000 people waiting for you. The final figures, as near as they could figure 1,250,000 people showed up, in NYC's Central park just to see him. WOW!

I am a big fan of both Billy and Garth but nothing Garth does is "by far" the best when it comes to comparing their versions of this song. If anyone prefers Garth's version then that is fine but to say his is by far the best in comparison to Billy's is just silly. As for Billy supposedly telling Garth he did the song the way it was meant to be done, Billy wrote it with Jimi Hendrix in mind. Garth was on tour for quite a while and when he came back home he had several CDs via a recommendations type thing that had been mailed out to him where if he did not reject the recommendation, so they would send them out. One of the CDs was Storm Front by Billy Joel and having no choice but to then buy it via not rejecting the recommendation, Garth listened to it and like Shameless and so recorded it but it was never likely to be in the same style as Hendrix or like Billy's version.

The Dance. I lost my dad 23 years ago this month when I was 16. The very last time I danced with him was to The Dance. He took his life just a few weeks later. Looking back there was a reason he chose that song. It's a beautiful song!

I love Garth. This guy retired, came back, put on a free concert in Central Park. Over 850 thousand people. They had to block the streets for overflow. He won entertainer of the year the same year. Ive had a lifetime of Garth and im still a fan in my 40's. He's an amazing artist.

i found you on here just recently but i love your reactions i been slowly going through all your reactions i will be watching for all your future reaction....now Garth Brooks you could dedicate a month to him he is awesome and it was a sad day when he retired from music so glad to see him back he is a legend in his own time and any songs you do this week you cant go wrong but i have to say this is my fav cause it is when i met my husband this said it all for me love your channel

Actually, there was an awards show where he performed this and at the end, it ended like this one but Garth fell to his knees and the lights went out. That was truly amazing!! I prefer his live version over studio, at least for Shameless.

However, Garth Brooks gives homage through his career, stating Billy Joel is one of his biggest inspirations and Billy Joel gave respect back by stating Garth Brooks made this song something he never could have himself and inviting him to several concerts to duo this one song with him.

My understanding is that Billy Joel wrote it during a bitter divorce from his first wife and Garth remade it during a peaceful divorce from his first wife. It's a song about a man who leaves his wife for another woman, in Garth's case, he left and married Trisha Yearwood,

It’s so funny seeing these 1990 awards shows! He was brand new and I know he felt obligated to put on these “scenes”. But if you could only see the man he is today, and the way he performs these songs today it would blow you away. The only way you might could see it though would be through someone’s phone video of concert. (That might get you in trouble though, lol) The Garth Brooks FB page has recent casual videos.
