This is a great stitch for a guy. So few options for guys, but this one does look great. I tried it with a heavier yarn and a single strand but it didn't work well. I'm going to try it with two smaller yarns together like you've done here to see how comes out.
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Let me know how it works out. The yarn does make a difference. I found that the yarn I used in the video worked out great because it really brought out the stitch, possibly due to a combination between the thickness and smoothness of the thread. It’s also super soft and easy maintenance. My husband liked it, at least. 🙂

Thank you! I used your pattern for my round-alpine-stitch beanie brim. I didn't like how a regular ribbed single looked, it was an odd transition with that stitch and the yarn I have! But this looks sooo much better and this is only the second(ish) thing I have ever crocheted (successfully) so I'm super proud of it working out. Thank you so much for having an easy to follow video! My kid loves his beanie!

Took some experimenting. To use regular medium worsted acrylic and get get proper 22 inch band start with 19" inch chain and I used 4mm hook because I didn't have a 4.25mm. Works to perfect 22" hat!

Okay so I understand that you are talking in measurements in the video (which is actually very helpful and I thank you for that), but have you ever thought about also telling us how many chains you have in total for the starting chain? And then also letting us know how many stitch should be in each row? I was just wondering is all ☺️ it just makes it easier for us who don’t want to break out a bulky tape measure from the tool box hahahahaha!!!
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 4 жыл бұрын
I have thought about it, but decided to go with measurements because of the types of questions I usually get. The first one is always about the yarn, (can they use a different size/brand/etc). And the second, being requests for measurements (for adults, or kids, etc). So, in the end. I opted for just sharing measurements instead as it makes it easier for folks to adjust the pattern to whatever they need it to be. It also helps free up my time to create more patterns, instead of having to makes each pattern in every different size and make adjustments for the different yarns sizes and pattern sizes, then typing it all out on the pattern. Also, I’m not sponsored by any yarn company, so I have to buy my own supplies, and having to make that many samples adds significant yarn cost to producing content. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That was a much longer response than you probably wanted, I’m sorry 😐 🙊

I love the pattern. Not crazy about using two skeins at once. I might just use heavy weight yarn? Do you want suggest any yarn? Thanks!
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You can use a heavier yarn, no problem. 🤔 depends on what look/feel you want. If you’re going for warm, a bit fuzzy and a soft worn feel, then super saver (red heart yarn) is surprisingly good even though it’s a value yarn. It softens up a lot when you wash it. You may need to play around with the hook size as there is a little spacing between the stitching. For a similar sheen to the hat I made, simply soft by Caron yarn will work. It will get a little fuzzy after a first wash though. For a cleaner look, use a cotton blend. This one will make the spacing between the stitches more noticeable though.

@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Melody! Thank you so much! 😊 I do! Here is the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z92ooMiruq6dZJc.html I used a thicker yarn for the scarf tutorial, which will work up much quicker than using the Woolike yarn I used for this hat tutorial. With that said, the Woolike yarn makes for a softer and warmer scarf, but the downside is that a full-sized scarf takes much longer to make. However, both the scarf and the hat can be made using any yarn, so that opens up your options 😁🧶 Happy crocheting!

I’m new to crocheting. What do you mean by using both of your skeins simultaneously?
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 4 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the awesome world of crochet! You use one thread of each skein, so you are crocheting with two threads at a time. Alternatively, you can use a #3 DK yarn and get a similar result (and only have to use one thread of yarn, instead of 2) . If you use a yarn with a bit of a sheen, it’ll look very similar. Let me know if you have any other questions :) I’m happy to help!

I made two beanies with these measurements and they both came out too big. I used two different sized hooks; a 5mm and a 5.5mm with lion brand pound of love yarn. And when I say too big, I mean ridiculously too big. 😂 I measured my head with a tape measure and it indeed, is 22 inches around for an adult large, so I’m not really understanding why the size is SO off. For anyone having trouble with this, what I decided to do was make it 21” long, and 8 inches high, including the brim. The pattern itself is absolutely lovely and the beanies were beautiful. It was just embarrassing having gifted one of them and the recipient put it on and he was drowning in it; everyone laughed and it made me look like I don’t know what I’m doing. 😬 My advice is to make it smaller than you think it needs to be, because it will stretch out a little bit, anyway. :)
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 7 ай бұрын
Measure as you go, hun. Once you crochet a few rows, measure your head, then test that measurement against the hat. Adjust as needed, even if it means frogging and re-adjusting your initial chain count. If you’re making it for an adult, your head measurement will do as there is not a huge variance in size and there is some stretch to the fabric. In general, whether you crochet, knit, or sew, always measure, measure, measure! Having the recipient’s measurements always helps, but if it’s a gift, there is a plethora of sizing charts online where you can find general measurements for various age groups and pattern types. You don’t need to use mine, I’m human and also miss the mark at times, so look up a few charts and compare the sizes.

Is it too loose a fit? How far into the hat are you? If you are still at the brim, you could make a much wider brim (double the width), that folds over itself. It’d keep your ears warmer and make for a comfy winter beanie, especially if you are using the fine yarn. Maybe. The 21” is a guide, and we all crochet a little differently. It could just be that I crochet with a tighter tension, which would make my stitches tighter, and closer together. If nothing else, at least now you have a personal measurement guide, and you’ll know that you need to make a smaller chain to hit the 21”. But don’t get discouraged 🙂an adult hat generally measures between 21-23”, so you’re close!

Hi! Thank you! I just released a tutorial for a hat pattern, and I cover how to resize a hat in the first 5 minutes. The stitch is different (it’s a Tunisian crochet hat), but the method is the same. Just make your sample using the yarn and hook you want to use for your hat, and use the alternating posts stitch (not the brim stitch). Hope this helps! Danielle Larson because I like the texture and drape of this particular yarn. It has a heavier drape than some of the thicker yarns, but doesn’t make too bulky a hat.

Greetings! Two years ago I made your hat for my grandson who is in the Air Force. He loved it and just texted me that he needs 4 hats for his buddies. Oh no, oh no! I am slammed re other Christmas deadlines, but am going to break away and try to get them all made in 4 days for him. I only made it once and don't remember a thing so will have to follow your tutorial explicitly! QUESTION: How do I add a contrasting color stripe x2 in the body of the hat and the color stripes line up and not be a row off? Or would it be easier to just choose your other tutorial that has it, like the pretty blue tweed/tan one? (BTW - You have been an invaluable source of instruction and guidance to me having picked up crocheting after a 50-year absence; I'm 75+. P.S. After the holidays, I'm going to watch all your Tunisian crochet tutorials so I can learn it and make all the gorgeous patterns on your channel.

You can do it, I believe in you! I’m glad you’ve found them useful 😊 Thank you so much for the kind words! That second tutorial you mentioned will show you how to do a color switch, but where you place the different colored stripes them is entirely up to you. To change colors: on the last DC of the row: Yarn over and insert you hook through the stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop (so you’ll have 3 on the hook at this point), yarn over and pull through two. *this is where the new color comes in** Yarn over in the new color and pull through the two remaining loops on your hook. Remember to leave long tail ends you can easily weave in once you finish the hat. I found that one row in a different color yarn is eye catching (if you just want a little contrast), but two rows makes the stripe pop. But then again, that’s a preference thing 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sadly, I didn’t write down the row/stripe counts, or I’d have sent them to you. 😬 Hope it goes well!! You’ve got this!!

Yes, you can. Make an initial chain in odd numbers. Join the ends of your chain, and then work your row of double crochets. Join the row with a slip stitch. Chain two, and begin working the alternating posts patter. Always join your rows with a slip stitch, and chain two to begin your next row. 😉

Hi! You can use any yarn weight you want, just swatch out a small sample to test your hook size and see what your fabric will look like. Once you’ve determined what hook you will use, you are ready to start! When you swatch, I find it helps to make a 4” (10 cm) length chain. Be sure to count your stitches! This stitch tends to expand from the original chain length, so you’ll need to adjust for that.

@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 5 жыл бұрын
Give it a try with the Woolike yarn and let me know how it works out. I find that the yarn you use makes a huge difference in the end product. The woolike yarn just made much nicer hats, and you could see the detail in the stitching much more easily than with other yarns. Are you using a solid color, or two+ colors for the hat? If you're using two colors, I'd make some rows in the secondary color to create more of an"edge" look. That way I wouldn't need to worry about the brim, nor would I have to use a different stitch and could maintain the same level of stretch throughout. So maybe on the fourth row from the bottom, I'd crochet a row of the secondary color, then make a row of the primary color, then finish the last two rows in the secondary color. Or some variation of that pattern. If you still have trouble with the posts looking like mine, let me know. I can set up a video call for us and we can go over the stitch if we need to :)
@lineem35
@lineem35 5 жыл бұрын
Mode Bespoke hi there!! I've picked up my yarn was so excited with woolike I started on the hat. You are Right! The yarn makes a huge difference! It's my first time using size 1 yarn and first time doubling up, and so far it seems to be okay. I'm only few rows in so I'm hoping as I get further along the D.C.posts will start looking like yours. It seems to be getting closer tog. on 3rd row up. I hope to get that woven look right! For the hat, the request is, it's to be all black. So I'm not sure what to do for an edge since I can't add color change into it. 🤔 what other options? I can't thank u enough for offering to help me on video call😁. I'll keep working and see If it starts to turn out. I've been keeping my tension pretty normal to loose. Is that right? Just so it fills in. And I've tried not to pull up too high on the D.C. I think it'll gap.
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 5 жыл бұрын
Yay! It’s so soft, right? I love that yarn! Give it a couple of rows, and if you still feel the gap between stitches is too big, try working with a smaller hook. You will have to make more chains to make the same length, but it should be a tighter stitch. I think 🤔 I used a G hook? So maybe try an F. So plain black and no brim, 🤔 let me think about it today and I’ll see what options I can send you in the evening.

I wanted to learn to crochet a hat for my grandson but I am so confused. This says to use a size 1 yarn. The yarn I bought says size 4. @ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke Жыл бұрын
Your questions are not dumb, I’m glad you asked 😊 I used 2 threads of size 1 yarn, and yes, it is quite thin. You can, however, use any size yarn you want. Use the recommended hook size on your yarn label, and that’s it. If you find the space between the stitches is bigger than what you want, use a smaller hook. As for it being warm, it is. I would wear mine when I used to go snowboarding and when I lived in WA.

@ModeBespoke 5 жыл бұрын
😂 I did, but you really can use any yarn you want! If you prefer working with a medium, a yarn with a light sheen would have a very similar effect. Something like Caron Simply Soft, or Hobby Lobby has one too (It’s Yarn Bee something, I can’t remember the exact name). If you do use a 1, double-up. So use two threads simultaneously. Hope this helps!
@j2nine
@j2nine 3 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit confused with the length of the yarn needed. How many meters/yards are needed for 4ply or DK yarn? You use two skeins of size one doubled up with 678 yards but also say it's enough for two hats. Does it mean you only need half of that for one hat?
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you only need half of that to complete the hat. It is much easier to work with two skeins and use one thread of each, than it is to use a center and side pull on one skein and double up the yarn that way (it becomes a terrible tangled mess). So hence why I suggest using two skeins I stead of just one. I probably could have done a better job explaining it, but it was the best I could come up with at the time. As far as how much yardage you’ll need for a worsted or DK yarn, that depends on the size hat you are crocheting. For an adult hat, you can use half of that 678 and you should have enough. I prefer to err on the side of caution and get an extra skein, just in case. You can always use any remaining yarn to make a matching short scarf. Happy crocheting!

Love the design! Question , i only have a 4.5 and 4 mm hook. Which do i use instead?🙈
@ModeBespoke
@ModeBespoke 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! 🤔 I’d go with the 4 so the stitches are a little tighter together (and the hat is a little warmer). But, you can always make a small swatch and see which one you like better. 🤷🏻‍♀️ When I’m trying to pick a hook, I usually make a small swatch about 15-20 stitches across, and a good maybe 10 rows up, with each hook. I don’t cut the yarn, so I can use it for my project once I pick a hook. I leave a few inches of yarn after my first swatch and immediately start with the second. Once I decide on a hook, I frog the swatch, roll up my yarn, and start working. Happy crocheting!

Thank you! Glad to hear you enjoy them! Are you going for a fitted beanie, or would you be ok with a slouchy beanie? Because if you are ok with slouchy beanie, you can keep crocheting like you are at the moment, then stop about about the 7-8 inch mark for length. Make a wide brim (is that what you are referring to as a “cuff”?). At least wide enough to fit comfortably and still snug enough to keep you hat on. Towards the end of the video, I show you how to make a brim. Are you comfortable making decreases? I’d make a few while working on the first row of DCs of the brim to make it fit more snugly. I hope that made sense, if it doesn’t let me know and I’ll try to explain it differently.

I hope I got back to you in time!! I didn’t see your message until today! Yes, you can just make the brim, or cuff as thick as you want just make sure to make the hat as long as you need it to be first, then add the cuff so he can fold it over and not lose length. If you’re making a folding cuff, then you don’t need to decrease at all. That fold will make the hat more snug (I fold the cuff on my kid’s oversized beanie to make it fit tighter). Also, adjust the size just a little when you sew it closed. Instead of crocheting (or sewing) along the very edge, just crochet further in (maybe about a 1/4 inch or even a little more, from the edge ) and that will help “shrink” the hat a little.
