Fagen did "Nightfly" on his own, and then "Kamakyriad"...but he asked Becker to help produce that second one; they were mending fences by the late '80s. Becker had gotten clean and sane in the interim (after a series of tragedies/mishaps) on his Hawaaian avacado farm, and had produced some other bands. Then they decided to tour--weird, b/c Fagen had been adversely affected by both stagefright and the roadgrind in the Dan's early days (plus there's their perfectionist bent and their penchant for "picking the best--and different-- studio musicians for every part in every song" didn't seem like it might translate well to putting together a static, stable touring band, on the road every night. But, it ended up working. Album of the Year Grammy for "Two Against Nature," at the turn of the millenium. Both Fagen and Becker each have two solo albums in the '90s & 2000s. Plus the Dan's "Everything Must Go," which I personally think is better than "Two Against Nature." You kids have a LOOOOOOONG way to go, you lucky so-and-sos! And, we'll be along for the ride...enjoy!

The start of Rikki is nicked from Horace Silver's Song For My Father. They never forgot their jazz influences. So not only has Steely Dan been sampled they have sort of sampled themselves. More on that later. There is an almost sinister edge to the tone of the song. Fagen's take could be defined between benign and stalkerish. It depends on one's interpretation of the song. In the end, it garnered them a top 5 US hit. Steely Dan group member Jeff Skunk Baxter did the solo on this one. Remember when he was in Steely Dan? Then he joined The Doobie Brothers later on. Horace Silver's Song For My Father: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eb2Vi7KemZ_PdWQ.html The highlight of Pretzel Logic live was Michael McDonald singing the vocal part after the solo. That live take really added something special to the song and gave it a deeper context. Walter Becker played lead on this one, one of his first leads on a Dan album. The song Gaucho has a poignant duality to it. It first deals with the male lover of the man in the song the so called Gaucho. How dare he bring this South American gay man to the Custerdome. In far more a subtle context, it is the story of Becker and Fagen's relationship. Becker was doing a lot of drugs, had tons of bad luck and was the less stable of the two partners. You can see the loyalty of the two and the downward spiral of Becker in the song. The message of getting rid of him is from the suits to Fagen with regards to Becker. Donald and Walter always put great importance on these lyrics. They were not only musical perfectionists but great storytellers to boot. Fagen was of course a big fan of jazz, even modern jazz. He let it slip in an interview that he was influenced by Jan Garbarek and Keith Jarrett's song, Long As You Know You're Living Yours. That is the biggest influence on the song Gaucho. So Rikki was not The Dan's only nick/homage. As a result, Keith Jarrett got song writing credit on the song. The Jarrett/Garbarek group performs it kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibNjadycycnHo4U.html A comparison of the two songs kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d8yGhq-Vy7aViWw.html Remember how Lexi liked the bassline on Glamour Profession? Well the bass player of that track Anthony Jackson originally played bass on this track. In true Steely Dan tradition and their perfectionist bent, they erased his part! Becker rerecorded it and did a fantastic job on this doing double stops and did some nimble playing on it. Walter played lead guitar here as well.

Fagen supposedly quipped that they were “the robber-barons of Rock & Roll.” They sampled before it was called “sampling.” He admitted his influences. And it was common practice - compare Led Zeppelin to the Blues tunes they “borrowed.” Lol. I don’t have a horse in the race or a writing credit to dispute, but I’ve appreciated the rampant “borrowing” that kinda birthed Rock. It is interesting though. And I appreciate all the info you dropped. ✨🤪

@@michelemichele3375 Thank you for your kind words.. I bought Gaucho the week it came out and have loved that album ever since. I am a Zeppelin fan but The Dan's homages were far far fewer than anything Zep ever did.

@@JC19676 Yes, agreed - there was some “illegal,” but fun (under the sun) borrowing ... but I have gained so much because of it. I’ve always thought that the English Invasion of the 60’s came to the U.S. reworking our own music and feeding it back to us. But for some listeners, it was maybe the first encounter with Blues or Rockabilly ... until the passion was ignited and we went back to discover the roots. It certainly helped my early musical education so I’m not too mad at it. And artists were awarded a few wins with writing credits. But then, I wasn’t robbed ... because yeah, some be blatant af lol. Nick and Lex, love you two like no others. To see you both, for the first time, experiencing this music that has scored my entire life is a joy like no other. I can still remember when Gaucho first came out and playing it for the first time in my friend Mikes room. A few friends together anxiously waiting to hear the new songs from Steely Dan. This was on vinyl and back then our rule was you had to play the whole side before repeating songs. We broke that rule for this album. You bring that all back to me so vividly. Gaucho especially has a depth of sound that is astonishing. During the chorus the chka-chka-chk of the guitar, faint but there, the back up singers highlighting just the precise right moments, so fluid and beautiful. Thank you so much, todays video brought me to very happy tears.

As someone has probably noted already, The Eagles Timothy B Schmitt sings on "Rikki". Part of the reason, though that the song has that Eagles feel is that Jim Gordon is drumming on it. Gordon, one of the great 70s drummers, made use of his toms in a very similar way to Henley. He was known for paying attention to their tuning and made use of them in a very melodic manner.

Funny you should mention the Eagles because they had a small competition between the two bands. The Hotel California line “They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast,” is a reference to Steely Dan. Steely Dan made a reference to The Eagles in their song ‘Everything You Did’, so The Eagles took a shot at Steely Dan in ‘Hotel California’.

Hey guys! I’ve always felt Rikki was almost “country-jazz”! because of the jangly guitars - almost steel guitar sound. The Dan creates its own style of blues- interesting story-telling lyrics… and the jazz is still in there, too!

Pretzel Logic is another KILLER GROOVE from the Dan. I think the one thread that runs through all of Steely Dan's music is Donald Fagan's writing and arranging. It's what makes their music great but also gives it a untiy of style from one end to another that is also never static.

Ahhh....you hit the title tracks for both Pretzel Logic and Gaucho, which round out my top 6 SD pieces. So fun watching you groove to the some of the best of 'your favorite band's favorite band'. Especially seeing the talented musician in Nick just shaking his head, hold his hands up and going, "Wow1" during Gaucho. Whatever did we do to deserve such perfect composition, engineering and performances? I can't think of a single thing. I don't recall seeing your doing Third World Man from Gaucho; maybe it's buried in one of marathons. But if not, #nicknlexrequest Third World Man. It's utterly unlike anything else they ever did. "Gaucho" (the title track) is a pinnicle for me, where they fully realised the vision of the band. It's perfect, flawless. I'm sure others have told you this, but the opening Bass notes of "Rikki..." are taken from Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", which is an epic tune in it's own right.

You're totally right about "Gaucho" being the theme song to a sitcom! It was called "No, He Can't Sleep on the Floor". It starred Ted Danson as a wealthy banker who's visited unexpectedly by his down-and-out college roommate played by Tony Danza. It only lasted one episode and yes, I'm totally kidding.

The guitar solo on Pretzel Logic is Hiram Bullock .Hiram played in David Letterman's Late show band with Paul Schaffer...unfortunately he had drug issues which eventually took his life....he was a monster player gone way too soon.

I have to correct you. The solo is not Hiram Bullock. He would have 19 at the time of this recording. The solo has been traditionally attributed to the great Jeff Baxter although many SD faithful believe it is actually Walter Becker. I agree with that supposition. Becker and Baxter have very different sounds and to my ears this is vintage Becker. Hiram recorded his own version of this song on his solo album “Give it what you got”, hence the source of the confusion. And Hiram sadly died of cancer not drugs.

You have to remember that the first 3 albums was by Steely Dan the band. Walter, Donald, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, Denny Dias, and Jim Hodder. From Katy Lied on it became just Walter and Donald with session musicians. Here's a piece of trivia. When they first started playing together at Bard College their first drummer was none other than Chevy Chase. I think you'll be quite surprised when you get to "Countdown to Ecstasy".
