Kids! On the new episode of Weekend Wankshop, you're going to learn the RIGHT way to play one of the greatest intro riffs in metal history... Master of Puppets, by the mighty Metallica!!!! This is still some of my favorite riffle to date, and its one of the riffs i see played incorrectly the most often. There's some sneaky F notes in both riffs that most lesson videos and tabs tend to miss. But miss them you shall not. You're gonna make uncle James and uncle Kirk proud.
You're also going to learn some essential tips on how to improve your downstroke speed to keep that right hand in ramming speed.

this was like the third riff I'd ever learned and because of that, I played it too much and struggled for the next year on Alternate picking.

Sorry but that's terrible I'm not even a bad ass guitar player and I could totally hear the first fret note. I ended it with a open string at the end of the first fret. there's so many different ways to play to get the same sound especially with such a fast-paced song. I'm about to go try it this way

It has taken me a month of playing almost nightly on average of 30 minutes dedicated to Master. I'm just now consistently up to speed....for one chromatic run. Got the spider riff down pretty well. Buf I'm definitely not a quick learner.

I appreciate the dedication to figuring out how the artist plays it. So many KZfaq tutorials are based on wrong tabs or bad listenings of the music. I'm not knocking people who upload a cover video. But there are some really popular channels presenting "tutorials" which I've learned and then realised are wrong.

How fine tuned does your ear have to be... for you to notice that a distorted, scooped guitar tone is playing on the low E (at that speed!) not 1st to open, but open to 1st? It's a semi-tone appart! During a split second! Going against what the brain is already expecting! Uncle Ben is a god! A god of chugga-chuggy note spotting!

u can slow it down, watch live performances. people really underestimate their ears and skill to learn songs without tabs. u just need to do it and then nitpick/modify your version to the point of it being 99% correct. then watch them play it live to see how well u did.

a lot of met songs I learned by ear, probably the best way to do it right. But always played MOP wrong because I couldn't get the downstroke picking fast enough. But thanks to his little trick (upward pick position like Hetfield) it might help a lot getting that speed without that additional motion from hitting the A string and back.

Man, Uncle Ben! You make it look so easy. Like you could take a nap and wake up totally refreshed at the end of the lesson. I've been playing off and on since I could heft my dad's strat copy. I'm 56 now, and I'm still the shits unless I have a ton of distortion, then I cold rock the mike bitches! But my point is this: your relaxed teaching style absolutely makes learning a breeze. I can do slow speed off the bat, your explanations were a big help especially with the picking, I COULD NOT downstroke that fast previously, now I can, may have to give you a call about lessons if this is anything to go by!

Cool lesson Ben! Been trying to learn this correctly. I think that MOP along with Kashmir are two of the coolest riffs in rock and metal history along with Iron Man.

That spider chord main-bastard riff is my nemesis, and so it is my daily drill. I also notice that you (and I) finger it a tad different than James. As he is walking up the frets, he keeps index on, and then keeps middle and ring on, then lifts pinky, lifts ring, rinse and repeat. By the time I get to pink while trying to hold that position, index is really having trouble the first note.
