Hey kids!!! On this week's episode of Weekend Wankshop, Uncle Ben here is gonna show you the right way to play one of the best guitar riffs ever, Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin!!! This one gets played wrong really really often, and we can't be disgracing the great riff powers of Jimmy Page, now, kids. So i'll show you the dead on balls accurate way to play this thing right. Find the nearest Marshall stack (or Supro combo), crank it up, and get rippin!!!
So about this awesome Gibson Les Paul i'm playing... it belongs to my friend Fred Boekhurst, my man from Amsterdam. Its one of the best LP's i've ever played in my life! He's done some really cool stuff to it, including: Reshaping the neck profile and sanding it raw, installing an awesome set of Cream T Banger pickups, removing the pickup selector, and rewiring it so its neck volume, bridge volume, and master tone. Really cool. The pickups are crazy, check them out sometime. Imagine the clarity and bite of a Tele and the body and fatness of a les Paul. Crazy.
Thanks for watching!!!

You hit on something very important, I think, Ben. Jimmy is and plays a relaxed guitar even when it sounds like he’d be clutching that neck and just slamming into that chord. It’s all loose, yet it sounds so effing kick ass! It’s a tricky part of guitar playing and honestly, when I used to play, I never quite grasped that concept. You can - and *should* be relaxed even when you’re sounding so killer. And it’s a difficult thing. And part of the ‘trick’ is dialing up a badass sound on your pedal(s) and amp and then just playing it relaxed so that you’re conveying bad ass wizardry while just sort of chilling.

So well explained . I was close but the open D and right hand movement i missed. And i heard that my playing wasn‘t the way the recording sounded. Thanks Uncle Ben from a 53 year old „kid“. Your lessons are very valuable. That solo from Clint Black´s „Summer Coming“ that you posted a while ago ... That is after all still a well conceived and technically challenging country guitar solo in perfection.

Gonna make a suggestion, the D note on the A string (bent slightly sharp) should be played along with the open D string. Requires the string bend direction to be upwards rather than downwards. The two notes together rub together to add extra sauce. Page does the same trick on Four Sticks but on D and G strings.

Two things: the riff starts with a slide up to the 7th fret on the low E; when he bends the A string on the 5th fret he gives it a little vibrato as when as a quarter note bend.

Nice Video.. It might be pointed out (you have the right tone here ) that Whole Lotta Love is played in the MIDDLE pickup position as is the main body of Rock and Roll (Live) and Black Dog. This Here is a fantastic lesson on the Studio Version. The Definitive Live Version we have (1973 Madison Square Garden) Jimmy Page plays with quite a different feel and vibe albeit still in the middle pickup position.

Maybe one about practice routine and how to increase picking speed over how much time... 10bpm/week or something like that, great vids man!
@Cthuwu13204
@Cthuwu13204 7 жыл бұрын
There isn't a specific goal like 10 or 20 bpm a week you're shooting for. People develop guitar skills at there own speed. Many guitar teachers recommend just starting at a slow very comfortable speed, then increase it little by little (like 2-3 bpm) as you get more and more comfortable. As you increase your speed, make sure you concentrate on specific parts one at a time; like picking technique, staying in tempo, keeping the fingers relaxed/not tensing up, keeping motions efficient (pinky not flailing about, tight picking motions), notes are fretted properly, unused strings are muted, so on, so on. If something doesn't feel right or you notice you're off, concentrate even more on that specific part before moving forward. The key focus here is that you're developing proper technique FIRST, then get faster, not the other way around. Be consistent, persistent, and patient, and you'll eventually get there.
@larrygeetar9309
@larrygeetar9309 6 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Haga Start slow - real slow - and get the notes and the techniques correctly before increasing speed. It's like learning a play in sports. Learn, walk through, bring to speed, then repetition so you'll play it without thinking. You'll just DO it. 99% of people cannot learn something at full speed without breaking it down and learning it the way I described. Any guitar instructor (or coach, for that matter) worth his salt will tell you this.

One of those "subtle details making it sound exactly right" is a not so subtle detail...to me anyway.. that nobody seems to get right. Even you! (and you're for sure one of the better YT rock guitar lesson guys) Page hits that first power chord with a bit of a soft stab and it's an almost a full bar chord. That high Maj 3rd on the 9th fret (the not so subtle detail) sounds so bitchin' being in the first chord. Anyway, love you're vids' bud. Keep up the great work.

Are you sure the D (on the A string) bend isn't upwards (towards the low E) instead of downwards? Seems like bending down would tend to mute the open D, whereas bending up would mute the low E, which is probably more desirable. #nitpicking.

I gave a talk on the "Internet, ie World-Wide-Web" back in 1995 on why (because of 3 major things) it would succeed as a new communications medium and eventually (TBD) replace or marginalize all others. The first was a technology that would allow even the marginally technically competent to create content that anyone could view, secondly it allowed for direct communication of advertising to users and more importantly that there would be an explosion of (mostly new) content because every person wants to share with (teach or show-off to) everyone else how much they know (on any topic). So, you are an example of one of those people who I identified would contribute to it's success, ie you are very skilled at something others want to learn, you want to share your knowledge, you demonstrate it in a novel and interesting way and apparently you don't mind if your subscribers/viewers surpass your level of expertise after "standing on your shoulders".
