This is the real African economy. Unfortunately, people think that these African outdoor markets are only for the poor. I saw a study years ago that found that such markets make more money in a single day than any other sector of the African economy. Yet, we call them "the informal sector".

I AGREE. THE PEOPLE WHO CONTROL THE MARKET SPACE, THAT CHARGE FOR THE USE OF IT, WHO GET MONEY FROM ALL THE OPERATIONS ARE MAKING A LOT OF MONEY. BUT THE POORER PARTICIPANTS ARE NOT. THEY SIT IN THE HOT SUN, DIRT AND DUST ALL DAY FOR A PITTANCE. OVER 100,000 POOR GIRLS AND WOMEN FROM THE NORTH SLAVE AWAY AS 'HEAD PORTERS' FOR ALMOST NOTHING AND SLEEP IN THE STREET OR PILED INTO HOVELS, MAKING SOMEONE ELSE MONEY FROM THERE MISERY. AND IT IS THE SAME IN EVERY COUNTRY THAT HAS ORGANIC MARKET PLACES. MANY RICH PEOPLE WORLDWIDE ARE RICH BECAUSE OF INCOME FROM THE WORST SLUMS ON EARTH. NEW YORFK CITY TOO.

@@lgnawa IT IS THE 'SMALL FEE' THAT IS THE POINT. I SAID NOTHING ABOUT TAKING VENDORS MONEY. SOMEONE CONTROLS THE LAND UNDER EVERY PUBLIC MARKET OR STREET MARKET WHERE BUILDING PROPERTY VALUES GO WAY UP AND SO DO RENTS. MAYBE YOU SHOULD READ WHAT PEOPLE REALLY SAY BEFORE MOUTHING OFF!

It’s a day to day struggle for the market vendors to make ends meet. However, at least the food is fresh without chemicals interfering with the quality of the produce. It’s good to see your family supporting the local market vendors by buying their produce. However, the government must invest more of its funds on infrastructure and improving the environment so that people can trade in a clean and safe environment, that is free from toxic waste.

Whenever I see videos on shopping in the local market, I always get frustrated by the amount of small plastic bags that are being used. if the bag were larger there is a greater chance for them to be reused. Unfortunately, these small small bags will only end up in the landfill or the waterways. We have to figure out a way to get back to the days when we used baskets and reusable bags.

GOOD COVERAGE AND PRICE INO. FOR ME, BEING FROM NEW YORK CITY, I WOULD JUST BE EMBARASSED TO GET THAT MUCH FOOD FOR THAT LITTLE. I KNOW YOU HAD A BUDGET AND DID WELL ON IT. WHEN I GET THERE, I FEAR I WILL LET THEM ALL KEEP THE CHANGE, THE COMPARATIVE PRICES ARE SO LOW. HERE, THAT TABLE OF FOOD WOULD COST OVER $100. US, AT LEAST! A FARMERS MARKET HERE, PRODUCE STRAIGHT FROM THE FARM, WOULD COST 10 TIMES OR MORE FOR ALMOST ANY OF IT. I WOULD HAVE TO GIVE THEM A TIP OF THE CHANGE.

I ALSO ADMIRE YOU FOR POINTING OUT THE LIVING CONDITIONS THE MARKET WOMEN AND FAMILIES HAVE TO LIVE AND WORK IN. I THINK MANY TOURISTS AND EVEN EXPATS LOOK AT IT AS COLORFUL AND NOT THE FILTH AND HEALTH DANGERS OF THOSE PLACES WITH FOOD, DIRT AND DUST AND OPEN SEWERS TOGETHER. AND THAT IS TRUE IN ANY COUNTRY WITH LARGE POOR AREAS. GOOD JOB.

This is an economy where you literary put money in hands of the actual producer and their families not corporate entities like walmart which privatizes profits. We communicate as we buy, we talk, we greet and go back home feeling like human beings. Where can you get depression from??
