True fucking story: My squad leader went to BLC with a guy like that that joined from a South American country and they made friends because he was one of the only other guys that spoke Spanish. He asked him if he wanted to go get food and he was like “nah I’m good” Next day same thing Day after same So he asks him “like man, what’s the deal?” And he says “I don’t really have money for it” “So you’re in like a lot of debt or what?” “No, no debt.” “So, I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but how? You’re getting paid E4 pay and I don’t see you buying anything. Are you just saving up? I mean I’ll spot you if you need, but I’m also concerned about this financial situation.” “……” “What?” “I’m getting paid?” “…..Yeah….. did you not know you get paid?!” “I thought you just work and live and then you get citizenship.” “Bro! You’re telling me you’ve been in the army for years! And you’ve never checked your pay?!” “I didn’t know” So he took him to check his LES, sure enough had been getting paid. So come to find out the people at 30th AG had set up a bank account for him but he really didn’t understand what was going on and didn’t know that. This guy had like $150,000 in pay sitting in a bank account he didn’t know about. He had been living off what little money his mom sent him, thinking it was like indentured servitude LMAO.

Lol my dad wasn't a citizen when he joined the Army, it was shortly before the Kennedy assasination, and no one bothered to ask his citizenship status. He was assigned to the US Army Honor Guard in Arlington and eventually the White House. When he was told he would be literally feet from president Johnson, my dad freaked out because Kennedy had only been assasinated the year before and he didn't know if him not being a citizen would be considered a security risk. Dad pulls his sergeant aside and tells him that he isn't a citizen, now the sergent is freaking out. He grabs my dad and drags him into the CO'S office. The sergent quickly explains the situation, how my dad is assigned to the white house and he isn't a citizen. The CO looks at my dad from across his desk and says "raise your right hand." My dad complies. "Do you swear you won't shoot the president of the United States?" Dad confused, "yes sir!" "Good, now get the F*** out of my office." My dad called that the first time he was sworn in as a citizen.
