Sometimes there are some things Scottish people cannot say... Like we just struggle... names like Carol, 'purple burglar alarm' 'Irish Wrist watch' and of course anything nice about the English...

The issue with the words "Irish wrist watch" is the w in wrist. We subconsciously think it's important and affects the pronunciation, but it really doesn't. Imagining it as "Irish rist watch" helps a lot.

@Shiirow
@Shiirow 6 жыл бұрын
its like a tongue twister because your mind will wants to pronounce the WRIST as a WRISH sound because of the word Irish. Partially because of the rarity of saying irish and wrist then watch, so your brain isnt wired for the shift between the three words. im sure you could train your brain to not make the connection or simply take a momentary pause between irish and wrist so your brain can disassociate the two words as separate unique words.

With my London accent, I struggle to pronounce anything with an "ay" sound in it, such as "fake" or "cake." What I tend to do, I've noticed- (and not just me, but a lot of Londoners in general), as I add an "i" what ain't really there, into them words, so they become "faik" and "caik." I just can't pronounce them "fayk" and "cayk." Anything with the letter "i"- (pronounced "eye"), it it's a weird one for me as well. Instead of saying "Pipe" and "Bike", for instance, they'll come out somewhere in between "bike" and the Irish pronunciation, "boik", and "pipe" and the Irish pronunciation, "poip." Not quite one and not quite the other, but somewhere in between the two. It's mainly anything containing them two vows what I've always had trouble with, and what any of my northern mates have always took the piss out of me for. I also have trouble saying words like "milk", 'cos with the "dark 'L'", it comes out more like "Miwlk." I also have trouble saying "girl" and "girlfriend." When I say either of them two words, they tend to come out more like "gel" and "gelfriend"- (but with the old dark 'L' striking again!) I also have to really think about what I'm saying in order not to use Fs and double Vs in place of some T.H.s- ("Fink", "Fings", "Beffnawl Green", "Norf", "Saaf", "Maaf", "Farvvuh", "muvvuh", bruvvuh"), "uh" in place of "er" on the ends of words- ("Bugguh!"), and the dreaded glottal 'T'- ("bu-uh", "gu-uh", "be-uh.") I come from Edmonton in North London, but I tend to say that I come from "E'mon'on in Norf London", if I'm ever asked where I come from, losing both the 'd' and the 't' in "Edmonton", in this instance. That's another one, seeing as I've just brought it up as well: anything with "ou" in it gets pronounced "aa" with my accent- ("Saaf", "Maaf" and "Traasees"- ["Trousers"]. I wouldn't invite ya to "my house", you'd get invited to "me 'aase", which'd probably make our American and Canadian mates think that I was inviting ya to look at me "ass"- (me butt)- ha-ha! That's about all I can think of right about now. Peace and love.

Truth be told, it's not hard via exposure therapy. If you try one of those videos meant to teach you phrases/Scots/etc. but just pay attention to the dialect and accent over and over again at least once or twice every two days, there's very little you need to learn other than slang and proper nouns to reach a 95-99% approximation over time. It's easier to go for southern Scottish instead if you've not been identified as American to begin with, as it's easier to fuck up in that "just went English a bit" way and get away with it. Or as I did trolling people online, I assumed the role of a Russian immigrant to Glasgow so they couldn't really call me on anything.

wri after ish is a natural tounge twister for most people regardless of accent mostly cause they are uncommonly used syllables after each other so you would naturally just say an Irish watch but because u add wrist which feels unnatural in itself as not what u would normally do it messes you over people that can achieve this without issue everythime have adaptable or easy thought process by easy I don't mean stupid but they don't overcomplicate or are strange and say syllables like rih after ish a lot in English 2017 lingual other people that speak other languages are excluded as I don't know how their syllables work

Carl: Okay... well i was in my room... Paul: Yes? Carl: Reading a book... Paul: Go on... Carl: And umm... this man walked in so i went up to him and stabbed him 37 times in the chest. No, it's unlikely to find a Scot online. There is only 5 computers in Scotland - 1 in Glasgow, 2 in Edinburgh (because it's better) and 2 in the highlands. Before he was allegedly a bit saucy, Alex Salmond introduced a tax payer funded shuttle bus to allow people to access the computers. You give them a call, they direct a bus towards you and you queue, waiting for your turn to use the computer. It's inconvenient as all hell but it does piss off the English something rotten because their taxes contribute to it all, even though they aren't allowed to use the service. If it pisses off the English, then it's generally worth a little bit on inconvenience and _that_ is why you don't often find Scots online. Fact.

When Americans say "mirror" it sounds like meer and "bearer" sounds like beer 😂
@shadowrider4182
@shadowrider4182 7 жыл бұрын
+Olive Webb That's because "mirror" is the exact same word as "mere" when pronounced, and there is literally no other way today it (at least not correctly), and there is no such word as "bearer" in everyday normal English, but if one is for some reading this word that will never ever be used anyway thereby making it a non-word also, one will say "bearer". There is no R in the middle of the word beer, which also spuds nothing like each other.

These are easy for me (American here), but I’ve always been very good at tongue-twisters. What I simply cannot do is roll an R, and that’s what interferes with your attempts to say anything with an R sound in close proximity to another R sound. For instance, the word “burglar” has only two syllables, not three, but the two R sounds are in fairly close proximity.
