Electric vehicles, urban mobility and climate change are some of the pressing issues taking centre stage at the World Economic Forum in Dalian, China. The second day of meetings come amid a rise in the use of green energy, in the region as well as the world. Experts also urged governments to set up a binding framework - to regulate development for artificial intelligence, with the technology still in its infancy stage. CNA's Tan Si Hui and Olivia Siong report from Dalian.

The European automakers, the American automakers, the Japanese automakers and the South Korean automakers have been making billions of US dollars in China for years.

As an American, I can assure you that the USA will not meet whatever green commitments they make. You have to understand two things, we have a car culture and commute distances here are much farther than other countries. So ya we make goals, but no one ever hits them. The commentator notes that the USA would have to partner with Chinese companies to hit the target but the goal of the tariffs were specifically to prevent partnerships with Chinese firms

There is no way the US will meet any commitment when leaders switch power every few years. The republicans will never agree to any of this. Each party thinks they know whats best.

As a consumer, i am pretty concerned about the life duration of car batteries in EV. The price of EV made in China is quite reasonable, but adding more tariffs and taxes will make it more difficult for transitioning to EV.

Over capacity is nonsense. China companies will lose if no one buys their vehicles....but these ev cars are great and cheap and attract buyers...the west and Europe cannot compete! It's as simple as that.

There are so many EV companies in China, it'd be better to wait to buy Chinese EVs after their market has consolidated. Many of the Chinese EV makers we know now will not exist in 10-20 years. Also for the government, subsidizing the cars has the potential to fail just like when the government subsidized large investments in housing and commercial real estate.

2:30 He makes a good point about investment in the EU being something to consider - factory construction. BYD in Hungary and Leapmotor in Poland are working on this, so all this geopolitical bantering will smooth out soon enough.

In the past decades, the oil industry have been killing EVs by suddenly dropping oil prices whenever car manufacturers launch EVs. With the shortage of oil due to the war in Ukraine, the western oil industry players are not able to drop oil prices. The only way to kill EVs, at least delay in US/EU, is the use of tariffs

if you can charge at night (now the mileage can cover a day use) it will be great to the power grid. in china, your car can sell electric energy to the grid. any way, PHEV is most suitable to the world at the moment.

ASEAN could become the world’s fourth-largest economy by 2030, comprising of a consumer market valued at over US$4 trillion. This economic achievement will be driven by four major forces: strong demographic trends (65 percent of ASEAN’s 600 million population will be middle-class), increasing foreign investment, rising income levels, and digital advances. Strengthening the bloc’s continued growth trajectory is its various free trade agreements (FTAs) some of which are the world’s largest. These FTA offers numerous opportunities for foreign investors, ranging from capitalizing on Singapore as the region’s financial services hub or moving manufacturing operations to low-cost regions in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. International businesses can benefit from ASEAN’s FTA network in the form of reduced importer costs, improved custom clearances, and increased access to products eligible for preferential treatment. Moreover, there are numerous tax and fiscal benefits such as tax holidays and deductions.
