(1860s glove) U guys were trying to catch the balls in the air, which is fine, but nobody did that in that Era or they would have broken their hands so that is why catching it off of a one hop was also an out

Those old timey players always used two hands. The gloved hand would stop/block the ball and the throwing hand would trap it. The balls were also softer with those first 2-3 glove types.

In the 1860’s, baseball rules were different than they are now. You could catch a ball off of one bounce and it was still an out. That’s why their gloves didn’t need to be more padded.

I've played these rules at a living history farm event and there is still a big advantage to catching a fly ball in that a runner could not advance on a ball caught in the air, but could do so when it bounced once, even though it was still an out. That was the rule based on the local historian anyway.

Thing about those 1860’s gloves is that you could catch a ball off one hop and still get the out, so most of the time they weren’t making catches nearly as manly as Jack’s.

if you watch some of the early films of baseball (and i mean EARLY, as in...they just started filming and its silent) that first move that jack did they actually did as well. they would sort of fall as they caught a pop fly to help absorb of it and reduce the pain.

Just two minutes in to my first viewing of one of you guys, so I don't know the names for sure but I think it's Nick making those one-handed catches with practically no glove? Nick needs to be called Death to Flying Things. It's an actual nickname of a very good outfielder from that time period.

I started with Baseball KZfaq by watching Momentum and King of Juco but I’m so glad I found We Got Ice and Jomboy. Everything with We Got Ice is positive. Jack is cerebral and I’d fight to the death for Zo. He’s so positive and warm. He’s a genuinely good person. And Nicky first threw me off with the Jersey accent but he’s so positive as well.

If I remember correctly, under the old rules if you caught the ball after one bounce you’d be ruled out so that might explain the 1860s gloves, then again given the time rules probably differed from league to league
