Wei Yi vs Magnus Carlsen - 2016 Bilbao Masters Final

This is a Round 2 game between 17-year old phenom Wei Yi of China, and the current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway from the 2016 Bilbao Masters Final. This is their 2nd classical encounter where Wei Yi once again has the white pieces. Instead of a Ruy Lopez this time around, the game enters d4 territory with Carlsen opting for the flexible Modern Defense. A direct line kicks off by move 11 and runs several moves deep to arrive at a queenless endgame where Wei Yi already acquires a passed pawn a single square away from promotion. A pawn one step away will certainly require one's attention and be a number one priority to track down as otherwise restricted pieces would persist. How could Carlsen, if at all, manage to track down that passed pawn? Might Wei Yi stir up some trouble elsewhere while Carlsen is busy hunting a pawn?

Wei is awesome chess GM and he knows beating Magnus is not easy with expected play, so constantly takes risks and lays traps with each move. One slip from Magnus and he may fall short of victory. Amazing to see this battle of minds with pro analysis from Chessnetwork. Always a privilege to watch Jerry annotating awesome games.

I write this comment some years late, but I couldn’t help doing it in this rich game and masterful analysis. Congratulations for your work. You bring us pure chess content, and with just the board and your voice you can be more captivating than any other chess analyst on KZfaq. I follow Agadmator’s channel and watch a Brazilian channel now and then, but none of the chess videos I’ve already came across here has your “less is more” approach that works so well.

is 15:40 really a draw? It looks winnable to me, although I don't have any of these fancy chess computers to test it out :) It seems that with very precise white moves there's nothing black can do to both take the A pawn, and to stop the knight/king from taking all their pawns. Probably wrong but I don't see how black does it. Either way, great vid as always!

Regarding 35. ... Ne5?? Pro Tip of the Day: Consider moves that improve your inactive pieces prior to considering moves that degrade the effects of your well placed pieces. That move was shocking from a player of Yi's caliber. It's obvious that you can't give away the 2nd rank to the rook and so any knight move should have been immediately dismissed. 35. b4 immediately creates connected past-pawns, opens the rook that is shut-out of the game, attacks the black knight, reinforces the white knight, prevents 35. ... c3 and 35. ... Rd3. It's beyond astonishing that he missed that. After he played Ra3, Carlsen took some time to play 33. ... Ne3 (which is a move that is required if black wants to win the g-pawn and show adequate compensation for White's soon-to-be connected past-pawns). Moving that knight is as large a blunder as you're ever going to see at the super-GM level.

Shouldn’t it be noted 35. Ne5?? instead of 35. … Ne5?? since it’s white’s move? Also, quite informal of you to not call Wei by his surname when you were formal with Carlsen.

15:18 I'm guessing the tactic is 1. Rxe4+ fxe4 2. Nd4+ ... 3. Nxb3 ... winning the Knight for free and guarding the C-Pawn's Queening square?

Hey Jerry, I'd like to say that I'm not quite satisfied with your depth of analysis of this game. There were a lot of important variations in this game that you didn't show. For example, what could've happened if Wei played the correct b3-b4 move and if Carlsen played Nxg2 after that. And also why did Wei destroyed his own beautiful pawn chain with d4xc5 earlier? But anyway, thx for the video.

3:00 Move 11. Why not ExD?
@realdizzle87
@realdizzle87 8 жыл бұрын
Exd is playable. It just leads to a completely different structure and, therefore, a completely different strategic plan for both sides. White is very likely looking to castle queenside (as evidenced by the fact that castle-long was what white played in the game). If white had played exd and black had simply castled (which is really the only sound option in that position) and after all the tension in the center is resolved, White's pawn on b2 is hanging to Black's finochetto'd DS bishop. It's very difficult, if not impossible, in most variations for White to find the time to move the queen and 0-0-0. Black's knight is already looking to jump into f5 or g4 and hit the loose bishop on e3. There are a ton of complications that might have led White to avoid that line. Like I said, exd is definitely playable - but white's d-pawn is the one that is backward in that position and therefore the one that White really wants to advance or trade.
