Wei Yi and Magnus Carlsen meet for the first time in Round 3 of the 2016 Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Wei's victory in the 2015 Tata Steel Challenges section earned a seat in the 2016 Masters section. Wei Yi is easily one of the most talented rising stars in the chess world at only 16 years young. With both players so young and talented, might the future hold a great many more encounters...quite possibly a World Chess Championship match? How would China's Wei Yi fare against the current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in a sharp line out of one of the oldest of chess openings, the Ruy Lopez?

+leerobbo92 well i don't know how stronger he will be. But Magnus has an amazing mind. His end games are awesome so he is not gonna lose easly in a classic chess game unless he really blunders with something which is not that easy again for him.
@leerobbo92
@leerobbo92 8 жыл бұрын
İbrahim Turna Oh I know, but Wei has an even higher rating than Magnus did at his age, and he's already started to develop his positional and endgame technique. He's broke so many records, it's hard to not see him competing with Carlsen for the world champion spot in the future. I'm not suggesting that he'll reach a point where he'll crush Carlsen at all, but he could certainly be on his level.

I watched this game live with commentary by Yasser, I was impressed with how relaxed Wei seemed to be playing the world champion. Even when Magnus had a large time advantage at times and Wei's clock was ticking down, he pretty much stayed cool as a cucumber the whole time and didn't even seemed to phased. Definitely not something you'd expect from a 16 year old playing such a high profile game. Round 4 Hou vs Navara was a good one too, may want to check that one out.

+ChessNetwork 2 things. 1. You're videos are hands down THE BEST chess videos on youtube. Not to start a rivalry or anything but I watched Kc's coverage of the same game and this video is better in every way: understanding, aesthetics, time spent on important nuances, even your voice and mannerisms and you clearly spend much more time preparing your videos. just awesome!! 2. Super happy that you've basically been putting out a video everyday lately(I think I'm speaking for everyone here). why couldn't the black rook go to a4 after the white pawn moves to a5. Therefor black attacks the a5 pawn and white no longer has the option of rook a3. I know this is not winning move, but i would just like to know a different continuation.
@groopsecks

13:07 if black ignores the exchange into this line and the knight forks the rooks winning the material back, what's wrong with the E rook taking e6 pawn? Exchange back would break the bishop pair, the black knight would be in a corner, and the rook would have to go babysit the B&C pawns. I don't think black should ignore. Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something?

at 5:17 white's queen can be moved into a defended position from D1 to G4 which would also set up a queen trade, would that work well? Because you move white's knight to D2 which loses the bishop on G5, which is an unnecessary sacrifice.

Somehow I keep expecting a Karpov-Kasparov encounter, perhaps even rivalry between the two. The boa constricting Carlsen vs. the tactical Yi. It is perhaps, what three, or three and a half years between when the two may meet in a championship match, what with the two-year cycle that has been proposed between championship matches, but I'm very happy (as a norwegian) that Carlsen finally might face a proper challenge to his title, who may be the next world champion. Let's see how he develops :)

+Eorzat Interesting chess comes first for me when it comes to analysis. Have you actually seen the Navara game? If not, any and every chess fan should see the game: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1813618 That one looked like it had a shot at game of the year for a while. I'd watch analysis of a brilliancy by an IM over a dead drawn Berlin between Carlsen and Anand (if you want an example of this, see round 7 of their 2013 Championship match). If by publicity you mean that a video with Carlsen's name in it will get more views, you're probably right.
@Eorzat
@Eorzat 8 жыл бұрын
***** I understand your point. But this video analysis was done not only because it was a game that included Carlsen, but that this was an anticipated match-up. No matter how well this game went, or how well other games went, it'd amiss to not an analysis of this particular game.

I think Wei Yi is, so far, the only player from the 'Computer generation' how they call it, who can be compared to Magnus Carlsen in view of raw talent and playing strength/age ratio. That's also why I was looking forward to this game for a long time as well. But if I had to make a prediction on how the future of these two players might look, then I would say that, even though Wei Yi is insanely talented and creative, Magnus Carlsen is still, and will stay, a class for him self. However I would love to see them playing in a match in maybe 2-3 years. Thanks for the awesome video Jerry!

+Ian Barrett These people do not actually play simple attacking chess. Instead this group of people play sharp attacking chess which is not my preference. Wei Yi tends to play simple chess until he get's a chance to strike at his opponent's king which is my style of play.
@pizzashark7067
@pizzashark7067 8 жыл бұрын
Do you really think that Wei Yi became one of the best players in China by playing "simple" chess? And do you really think you're qualified to differentiate "simple" chess from "complex" chess? On what basis do you claim that Wei Yi's play is any less sharp in preference than Tal's? My point is that there is no "simple" attacking chess on the GM level, and if your attacking is not "sharp" and "tactical", you won't be winning many games. None, in fact.
@ghost79ish
@ghost79ish 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree... I'm really not sure what you mean when you say simple. Maybe patient is a more appropriate word. There's nothing simple about attacking chess when you're playing at the 2700+ level.

pause at 22:16... why doesnt steel just go c3 to c8. MC g8 to h7 TS f4 to f5? i played it out in my head and seems like the best move to me

+Steven Bell Because then black rook takes the a-pawn and now has a passed pawn, while white hasn't really gained anything -- the step forward by the f-pawn has comparatively little value since the f-pawn is still not passed.

mt thoughts? i think they both lost patience.. they both had a chance to win. they didn't want to play out the game to find the advantage.. every move creates an issue or an initiative. too bad... this game is not losing for neither of them... i wish they kept battling
