the Fords were allowed because they were closely based on actual production heads that were homogolated according to Nascar rules and sold on production vehicles to the public, so it was fair even though GM was at a dis -advantage. Ford Cleveland heads are far superior to any stock production small block head by GM or Mopar. those SB2 heads were never offered on a production vehicle so im not sure who's palms got greased at NASCAR to allow that head to be legal.

NASCAR has ALWAYS favored chevies and has to make special rules to allow them to compete. Chevy NEVER made a head like this for a stock production car so it IS illegal Ford ALWAYS gets banned for making special engines or special parts that only exist on race engines. Ford guys resenting GM may come from the fact that the Cleveland was penalised or even outlawed in so many classes of racing, making the Ford guys eternally salty about the politics of racing bodies and the obvious bias against their brand. I'm a Ford guy and I recognise the shortcomings of the Cleveland, and 429/460, as well as the fact that Ford took a lot of ideas from the BBC (released 4 years earlier) for their design. The biggest shortcoming in my opinion is the 4 head bolts per cylinder design, placing one of the bolt bosses right where the port should ideally go (ie: sending the flow to the middle of the cylinder). Instead, the port curves the other way, having to then make another turn at the valve to get into the cylinder. I believe that this is where the shrouding issue comes about. BBCs dont have this bolt issue (having a different head bolt layout), but they're shackled with another design flaw in that they insisted on having siamesed ports on a head with equal spaced valve layout (like Fords), so looking at one head, you have 2 ports that curve the right way, and 2 the wrong way. The Cleveland I believe has all 4 going the wrong way. (Due to said port routing ussues). In the end, everyone "copies" everyone at some stage. The LS does indeed look quite Ford-like. Ford pretty much reverse-engineered the Buick 3800 V6 in the 80s. One could argue that the BBC was heavily inspired by the Chrylser Poly head from the 50s.

I think GM Siamesed exhaust ports to maintain the stock small block head bolt pattern. That might be how GM back door the SB2 into NASCAR calling a stock block. I was working a regional SCCA race at Sears Point in the mid 80's and two SCCA Trans Am style cars where getting a lot of attention from GM factory people. I knew they were GM factory people cuzz 2 of them talk to me about the car I was working on and gave me a "We Build Excitement" T-shirt, I still have the shirt. They were covering the motor with a blanket, like they were operating on a kidney when the hood was off. They also had enough people around the motor area when the hood was off, it looked like in a operating room. Then one of cars tore the kevlar off the front end and the car ended up in impound lot. Before they got motor covered enough people got a glance at the motor, some said it was big block and the people more in the know said it's the new small block chevy 2 and that people who thought it was BB didn't get good enough look.

@bennyfactr6122 In Nascar, everyone copied everyone else. Cheating was rampant in the 70s to the 90s. Some of the things that went on were just crazy, especially on restricted engines. Ford had a slight advantage and then GM had the advantage. In the end they both made 850 to 900 HP. Now the rules have changed and are both being strangled to death at 550 to 650 Hp, and are thoroughly inspected after every race.

Ford did away with the cant in the intake valves after 1988 with the 6049-C3 heads which were standardized at 7.5* valve angle with 0* cant... however Ford brought cant back in their design with the D3 head... and did away with it again in the SC1. Prior to the C3, the Ford SVO A3, B3 and C302 NASCAR legal casting used Cleveland valve train architecture with revised runner locations.

Case in point Mark Martin, NASCAR kept the Tarus so out of whack on the track Mark spent 7 seasons with a push in the corner. No forward bite. You take gordon out there pulling his fenders out and less spoiler and lower to the ground. I'd say he had it made. Kinda like Dale Sr. spending half his career in the NASCAR hauler blowing something under the desk, while crying about the Cleveland having bigger valves than the Chevy, but Chevy was running the 4.125" 400 SBC most of the time, compared to the 4" bore Ford. "Oh the 351C is a Big Block" Cried Dale. All the while the Elliott brothers were working on the dyno their dad bought them..... Perhaps why Darrell Waltrip handed Dale Sr 60 losses in 5 years in the 80's. Or should I say 60 wins for DW. Sr was always worried about the wrong thing.... All in all Dale put the #3 in the wall.

The C3 was out first like you said why can’t Chevy use those because Ford’s already using the Cleveland style canted valve. The big differences the Chevy is Siamese exhaust. The Ford is symmetrical. At the end of the day, the combustion chamber and everything else is the Robet Yates design. This is why four guys always say this stuff because it’s true. GM now uses symmetrical stuff LS lt all symmetrical cylinder Heads on production engines.Later on in the late 90s NASCAR standardized, all the ports to be of the Robert Yates design. in the early to mid 90s general motors was making symmetrical port aftermarket aluminum heads for the pro stock truck class and they’re still our guys nostalgia racing. What few people know is GM really didn't design the Sb2 heads, and Ford didn't design the C3 or the D3. One of the best kept secrets in the NASCAR ,World was Don Losito. He was working on the Sb2, the D3 ford, and even Dodge heads, when they were involved. Only about 3 or 4 people really understand what makes a good head, and how to get NASCAR approval. That is why alot of this stuff looks somewhat the same, because the same fertile minds, designed all of it. So it really is pointless to argue, who had a better design because the same people had the knowledge and did the work. Just matters who was paying the bills $$$$$ !

Because this small group was doing work for nearly everyone, they had to be quiet, and descrete. They are all in 70s now, and still, rarely talk about their work.

Every time i hear a ford guy spewing Chevy just copied ford all I really hear is someone coping with the fact that they can't afford good parts. Ford makes great heads they cost money their own engineers designed them. Same with Chevrolet. their own engineers designed them. This joe copied fred stuff is b/s and it needs to go away.

The reason this head was originally banned in NASCAR was because it didn't maintain the stock architecture. Back then NASCAR actually still had a few rules requiring stock type components. Ford got to run canted valves because they had production small blocks with canted valves. I suspect that's why they didn't get rid of the siamesed exhaust ports with these heads. NASCAR wasn't willing to let them venture that far from stock. When Toyota came in all bets were off on engines and that gave us the RO7 and FR9 engines after Toyota kicked their butts for a few years.

@@WeingartnerRacing I hated to see them come in, but what really sucked how they were allowed to come in. Since they didn't have a pushrod V8 they were allowed to build their own as long as they stayed within the limits the other manufacturers had at the time. That meant they got to choose the best characteristics of every other engine on the track and put them together in one engine. Best bore spacing, best deck height, best bore and stroke, best valve sizes and angles, etc. Then they hit the track and won 10 of 12 truck championships before everyone else caught up. It was a joke. And NASCAR wonders why they are struggling.

There are multiple versions of the C3 heads. Some are canted, others are not. To make matters worse, Ford used the same casting number for multiple heads.. E3ZM-6049-C3 and later M-6049-C3, could be had either way....... Heads with these casting numbers, could have had canted or just staggered valves. Some C3 heads are indeed, canted valve heads.

you absolutely do not know what you're talking about. there was no problem with the flow of that head and if you're talking about the head bolts and the intake Port A lot of them are like that they've been doing that since the 60s when they added the extra bolt holes at the top on a big block Chevyhave you ever looked at the tunnel Port heads Ford off of 427 they actually have a push rod going through the intake they press the tube in there right in the center of the intake portyeah there's no problem with that head bolt it is actually a good design and the best part about it is it doesn't affect air flow

@@jameyharviston2452 I’m old school back when horsepower actually mattered. Ford was dominant back in the era. It’s nothing but an IROC series now. What NASCAR has turned into is nothing like it was when innovation by teams made the difference, not NASCAR mandates. At one time Ford was the ONLY manufacturer that had to run restrictor plates at super speedways because of that Cleveland cylinder head. In NHRA competition the cleveland engine had to carry more weight per cubic inch than hemi chryslers or anything else. These heads are almost identical to a Ford cleveland(335series) engine other than their outdated Siamese ports and chambers. They also resemble the old Yblock Ford. It was designed by the same guy that designed the mouse motor that made Chevy famous.
