Most Unusual Railroad Diamond In Ohio! Trains Don't Ride On The Rails! See How That Is Possible. 2 Trains Pass Perfect Timing Head To Head At 5 Track Railroad Crossing. CSX Spirt Of Our Armed Forces Locomotive Crosses The Railroad Diamonds In Greenwich Ohio. 6 Trains On The Day Of The Eclipse this vid. Some Of The Eclipse Darkness Is In This Video. See My Part 1 Video Of A Train Going Through The Eclipse Here.
Have you ever heard of this type of railroad diamond? It is called a Flange Bearing Frog Diamond ( FBF ). I show the diamond up close and explain how it works. The wheels on the freight cars and locomotives do not touch the rails. The flanges support the train going over the railroad diamonds as I explain and show in the video. This prevents maintenance costs and reduces noise. I have shown One Way Low Speed ( OWLS ) diamonds in previous videos from Indiana and Ohio. This is different than those and uses replacement bars that are cheap and easy to replace. I show those also.
This video shows the CSX commemorative locomotive 1776, The Spirit Of Our Armed Forces leading a coke train over the diamonds. That was a pretty cool catch.
Highlights of the video show 2 trains approaching at the same time in opposite directions and passing right next to the diamonds. We also see the old New York Central Railroad signals that are still in use. We also see a closeup of the rail and evidence of a recent passing of a rail grinder. I rode up here with Scott @1960gambit. We came up here to film a train passing during the Eclipse 2024. We actually got lucky and filmed a train at the perfect time during the Eclipse. That is Part 1 for this video and is a must see. At the end of this video there is a link to that video.
We also see the Live Action Pets doing their thing and we see the slide show that comes from this video.
Filmed Monday, April 8, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!
Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

The lift frogs reduce the noise but more so the maintenance on the diamond, the lifting bar is a wearable part cheaper to replace. As for the flanges they are not on long enough to sustain any noticeable wear or damage the wheels will wear out before the flanges will. The inside edge of the frog has a small lip that will keep the wheels in line so no need for speed restrictions, they have been installed alot on low traffic lines that cross busy lines to reduce maintenance costs.

That’s what I was thinking..putting weight where it’s not meant to be.🧐
@Stant123
@Stant123 3 ай бұрын
Would love to know that myself, but I imagine it's a bit of "which is worse" and "which costs less"? Do you want your wheels breaking because the flange gives up after being stressed carrying the weight of the car and load albeit for a very short amount of time, or do you want your wheels breaking because they're slamming into the diamond, which also carries the extra cost burden of also having to regularly replace the diamond? All of which can be prevented with regular inspections. I'd think the gradual transition onto the flange is much less stress and prone to breakage than steel wheel slamming up against sharp edge of steel rail diamond.
@frankely6378
@frankely6378 3 ай бұрын
As JT said, these diamonds are *experimental*. The railroad is asking the same kind of questions. Although I expect the flange wear is not that big a deal. The flanges are pretty stout, and keep in mind that the normal contact patch between wheel and rail is about the size of a US dime, so there shouldn't be that much difference. Many years ago (as part of a college project) we used an old freight car wheel as a flywheel for some energy storage. That single wheel weighed over 600 pounds, and most of that was in the rim area. (It made a really good flywheel.) So the area around the flange is well supported. And everything that @Stant123 said is on the money.

Thank you for this second video from your trip to Greenwich, Ohio on 8 April 2024, Jaw Tooth! The flange bearing frog diamond is used on the train line that sees the least traffic. That type of diamond would not work at the Rochelle, Illinois crossing of the Union Pacific and BNSF. That was a great train meet of the two trains on the curve. That was a nice catch of CSX's engine #1776, The Spirit of Our Armed Forces" commemorative unit.
@sanddabz5635
@sanddabz5635 3 ай бұрын
So exactly why wouldn't the flange frog diamond not work at the other RR crossing in Rochelle Illinois?....isn't a crossing just a crossing?
@thomasmackowiak
@thomasmackowiak 3 ай бұрын
@@sanddabz5635 the information that I found on the internet seemed to indicate that flange bearing frog was used in locations where one of the rail lines has less traffic than the other line. I have no idea what that means in actual number of trains passing over the diamond. At Rochelle, Illinois you have two major railroads running trains on double track mainlines. At Greenwich, Ohio you have a single-track line crossing a double-track mainline.

Right. One of the claimed advantages of the FBF is that it eliminates the pounding as the wheel goes across the gap in the running surface of the rail. Reduced noise, reduced impact loading on the rolling stock, and reduced wear on the rail head.

UP has one of those diamonds (or something similar) in Sacramento where the lead to the state railroad museum crosses the mains but, to my knowledge, it's only the museum lead that rides on the flanges. They used to build the lead temporarily over the mains when needed but that became a chore with the time limitations. I'm kinda surprised there isn't a significant speed restriction over that.

One thing I like about your videos is that you are able to show us many of the car markings while a number of others don't. I've gotten interested in checking out what some of these cars, tankers in particular that are dedicated to such things as "Molten Sulfur" and "Non-Odorized Liquified Petroleum Gas." I also check cars on the rare occasion I can see them in person, marked for "Cooking Oil" and various kinds of food products like "Corn Syrup." And then there are the cars, flats in particular where we can see those loads. I originally came for the locomotives and ended up staying for the rest. 😄

My grandfather and members of his family worked on the old railroad in Nova Scotia. It was called the dominion Atlantic railway …once everything changed to diesel. It was never quite the same I remember him telling me….I guess they have pretty much torn up all the track In my province, except for the big rail yard and mainline that leaves Halifax with IM trains from the container port and passenger service to montreal….. I am glad I found your videos because as a kid we had trains all across the province and I grew up next to the train station. We had what was called a day liner. It went between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Halifax, Nova Scotia every day, and it left at 7 AM so we do have a rail history here. but unfortunately, trains are basically gone. You do a great job with your videos and I found you while watching Shoestrings videos. Keep up the great work Jon

Thank for the explanation of the diamond. I found that very interesting. It will be interesting to see how long the flanges last before needing to be replaced.

Great video, I still think about shoestring slot,he came up missing same day my father passed away. I went over and watched some of his videos in his memory, including the one where you guys first met. I still get a kick out of that, he thought you was a cop. Haha. God bless....

I know what you mean. My best friend went and got himself killed in a car accident almost a year ago. We had plans of traveling where we wanted to go, just waiting on the children to grow up. I think Mark, you, me, all of us think tomorrow is a given. It's not. It's a gift and we should be grateful. Keep up the good work...

You didn't just catch the train coming over the diamond on that 1776. You caught that beautiful sunset gave it an almost American feel about it.
