The fully dry dates are previewed for sub-saharian exportation. You can rehydrate them by steaming then you eat. There's also other kind like early dates (called m'nagar / ratbe/ balah) half brown sugary and half yellow crunchy, also a kind of dates paste (to be used in Cookies), Rube (kind of dates syrup), dates honey 🍯, dates flour and more and more...

Dates are just fantastic! I've had some very nice ones gifted to me once by a friend whose family had gone to Algeria to visit some of their family members still living there. They wanted to bring me something they knew to be very special, and oh my goodness were these things amazing! I remember just thinking, "why eat candy ever again?" They were sticky and sweet, and soft and almost a perfect candy replacement! They were just amazing. I really miss that family... Thanks for sharing this with us, Jared. It's so nice to be reminded of some of my happier moments in life. I hope everyone is doing well and having a great day!

I have a good friend from Algeria (but born in East Germany - she went "back" after reunification. She always brought me some dates from her own palm orchard in the desert when she visited her family in Germany. And holy sh... those Algerian dates make the store sold ones look like crap. Amazing! She also brought me candied orange and lemon rind from her own garden citruses. I attempted to make it myself multiple times but I have no clue whatsoever how she managed to make them THAT delicious.

The most facisnating Date to me is the Judean date. It was lost for a long time, before being revived from 2000 years old seeds. I don't know if the fruits are being sold commercially, but as a plant nerd I would adore being able to buy them one day.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer Жыл бұрын
I would love to try this one... maybe one day
@alasdair_scott
@alasdair_scott Жыл бұрын
While it's cool that they managed to germinate the 2000 year old seeds, the Judean date isn't a specific variety - the genetics of the seeds recovered are diverse, and are captured in various modern day populations. They aren't being sold commercially (yet), as there are only a few plants, and the dates are less domesticated (much smaller, larger seeds, less productive) than modern day varieties. It's more interesting for historical reasons - for instance, the fact that the genetic makeup is so diverse indicates that the area was a strong trade hub.

Just a tidbit for anyone wanting to eat fully dry dates, please take out the seed and wash the inside of the dates. I've eaten them for years and they almost always have dead bugs in them (probably because they're hollow on the inside from the extra dryness compared to the soft dry dates). I've recently ate dry Palestinian medjool dates (I usually eat the soft wet Palestinian medjools so this was new for me). I bit half of it before looking taking out the seed and saw dead bugs inside (kinda look like weevils).

I didn't learn about dates until later in my twenties. I didn't know what plants dates come from or what they looked like naturally or anything. Little did I realize dates grew near where I lived. Jared, I suggest you try the fresh Barhi dates. But you won't find them in Algeria or the Maghreb. You have to go to the middle east (Iraq, Iran, Arabia, Egypt). And you have to go during fall, not earlier, not later, because the right window of ripeness is very short, and cannot be conserved.

Few weeks ago, I have driven around 1200km in one day (round trip from Toronto to Montreal) just to buy my beloved Algerian dates (arjoun) plus few Hamoud Boualem (white soda). By the way the tastier Algerian dates are not Deglet Noor, they are from the Touggourt region. Only few Algerians know that. They are not as beautiful and big as Deglet Noor, but they are so tasty! Thanks for your video.

Good episode - dates are really tasty. We got some assorted chocolate covered ones recently that were like toffees.I think they were Medjool dates. I'd like to try the fresh ones as I've always wondered about them.

I like half-unripe because it's sweeter than unripe, but still healthier than the riper/dried versions. Dried dates are very low in water and very high in sugar, which makes them not quite as healthy as you might think. Yes, healthier than candy or cake, but still diet busters.

Looking to try those Ajwa dates sometime. So far, my favorite is Mazafati. They are delicious. It’s remarkable how many varieties of dates there are- some so very local

Great video! By the way, any date can be used to break the fast. The Ajwa is given significance in Islam because it was the prophet's favorite (peace he upon him).

A friend took me to a potluck dinner at his Mosque on the last day of Ramadan. They had some of the best food, and they sent me home with a package of those black dates. It was memorable.
