Many would argue that there is nothing better than a chicken nugget. They're hot. They're crispy. They're undeniably delicious! But what exactly is the origin of this fried chicken goodness? And what mystery meat actually resides inside of them? Let's find out!

Man I understand this perfectly 😅 You can make them yourself if you want, which for some people it's too much hassle. I have tried and it's a bit of a day just cooking everything to freeze. Seems we have to do that OR you can find the cheapest nuggets in the market and read the labels. In my country (Argentina) the cheapest store-owned nuggets include brown meat and some skin, while most expensive nuggets are only breast meat. Chicken breast is always more expensive in my country because it's used for EVERY. DAMN. THING. We can think off with chicken 😂

Fun thing about the end of WW2, tons of chicken farmers tried to export their chickens to Europe after the war (1963). But the proto EU didn't want their own chicken farmers to get beaten out by a foreign market. The decided to put a tariff on US chickens to keep their own markets safe. US lawmakers got so buttmad about this they created the Chicken Tax legislation. Which is still in place today, but doesn't touch upon any chickens, instead it makes small trucks impossible to sell in the US (even from US automakers) by imposing a 25% tariff on any "small" trucks (Which is defined REALLY badly). Functionally its still in place because the American big 3 auto makers just really suck at making vehicles lol.

I've rarely eaten any american type fast food, and the one time I tried mcnuggets (quite cold), I thought they were absolutely terrible. I also semi-hated the big mac, though there it was more the disparity between the low quality and high price. mcdonalds offering less food in the big mac that's much less tasty and slightly more unhealthy for more money than single kebab shops despite mcD's scale advantage is absurd. I suppose the other fast food chains are similar, but mcdonalds certainly is a huge ripoff. it's also super obvious in the price of the fries, but tbh the taste of those does work on me.

I like the nuggets with the thigh meat the best. The older people who were around when nuggets first came about know that the taste was far better when they mixed the thigh meat and breasts. Now there are patties and nuggets that were made from whole chickens and their gizzards as well. I do not think any company processes the whole chicken in to an emulsion anymore. Those nuggets were far better because it contained everything from skin, bones, organ meat and the main chicken meat. I have tried to find recipe that uses everything yet commercial recipes really do not exist outside the companies that make them.

The corporate story I read held that the Chicken McNugget recipe was derived from the battered, fried chicken chunks used in American Chinese restaurants. I suppose this kind of came full circle when the Mulan-tie in was released, but that was nothing more than a sauce served with a tiny packet of chow mein noodles for some reason.

Once again, we have Stephen Colbert on the mic for the Weird History Food channel! Chick-fil-A has the best nuggets but it's not really a fair comparison because CfA's are actual chunks of chicken. Of the Frankennuggets, I'd say McD's are better than the rest. The texture of the meat and breading are just superior to what anybody else is doing.

@@chobies5383 Don't we all know that Tom Blank and Stephen Colbert are actually clones? Nobody has yet figured out who is the original though.

Wow, I always wondered how much chicken (and which parts) were in those things because of their weird texture. I really believed the pink slime thing, again, because of their weird texture. Thanks for the info.

I think we often don't think about how innovative some stuff are. If I made a deep fried beef nugget it would be sacrilegious but it's so different than the norm I don't even want to dwell on the thought of it exsisiting

"Everything that's' actually in a Chicken McNugget" doesn't list everything that's in them. Just that someone made something close with bread, chicken, eggs, and milk.

The Mc chicken meat patty was huge in the early 90s when I worked there. Then they went and cut them by what seems like half and the meat sucks now

So, are we just going to ignore Burger King's Chicken Tenders? I know they aren't a processed poultry adjacent sponge to move ketchup from the packet to the child's mouth but they sure were good. Those tenders were a perfect accompaniment to the french toast sticks.

I like to eat some chicken nuggets from time to time. I think they arrived here in Argentina in the late 90s, when the brand "Patitas" was created, the nuggets themselves were in the shape of chicken drumsticks, there also included spinach and pumpkin varieties for those who didn't want to eat meat
