the only downside with a geared headstock is the terrible noise in hihg gears. btw, that runout on the face from the chuckadaptor on 15.40 minute, i would skim that face lightly so you have zero runout, its very important ! cheers ben.
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 8 ай бұрын
Luckily all high gears didn't create any loud noise, contrary I noticed noise at middle speeds 410 and 550rpm; it have been past 3 years since I bought and use the lathe, now the noise from middle speeds is much less. As for skimming the face I haven't done it yet, but definitely worth doing it- thanks for pointing out! All the best Dimitris

Good informative video. I watched it more than once ;). I acquired the same type (different brand name) of lathe a few days ago. I also got some tooling with it. Have you fitted a quick change tool post or a 4-jaw chuck? I have been wondering how to fit those to my lathe and would like to get your input on it.

I apologize for the late reply. Thank you very mych for your comment, I really appreciate it! No I haven't fitted a QCTP neither a 4 jaw chuck; both are needed but at the moment I can't afford buying any of these. Now, as what QCTP I will choose, this will be a Multifix A size, but I haven't figure out how to attach it. For the 4 independent jaw chuck definitely you will need a back plate. All the best Jimmy

Grate! I have the exact same lathe and I´m very happy with it. Have done much of the de buring and fetling as you did. I don´t believe the leveling is at any importance. On big lathes they are doing leveling to adjust the twist of the lathe. In this case this is at minor importance because we can´t adjust twist on a small lathe bolted to a "soft" table. It would have to be standing on a firm concrete floor. The rubber between the lathe and bench will insulate the lathe from the bench and give it a bit less mass to sit on, more prone to oscillasjons. Preferably I would bolt the lathe to a heavy concrete bench to add mass. The bench dosent provide much mass, so my impression is that it is less important to bolt it to the bench. Especially if you have rubber between the lathe and the bench. I have mine just sitting on the bench and I have no issues at all.
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the comment, I appreciate it! I'll agree with you, a 'soft table' (kitchen countertop in my case) is not the best; proper leveling can only be achieved with a very sturdy base that would has at least 2 times the weight of the lathe itself plus leveling feet. Now, what I'm planning to do let's say as 'middle solution' is to lift up an put the lathe on the cast iron feet the manufacturer makes for it; I don't know if will change something, but I think it worth trying. Thanks again for your comment! All the best Jimmy

Hello Dimitris, thanks for the video. What type of oil is recommended to be used in the lathe gearbox? Thanks a lot for your time
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 6 ай бұрын
Hello Jesmond, Thanks for asking. It's recommended the use of hydraulic oil ISO 32 or 46; you can use any of these oils on the headstock (if the head has gears in oil bath) as well in the gearbox. Thank you for the comment! All the best Dimitris

I'm in the process of researching buying my first lathe. It is coming down to this lathe or an equivalent sized one with variable speed. What are your thoughts on this geared lathe versus a variable speed?
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Ted, I apologize for the late reply. To me there are two negative and two positive things about variable speed lathes: First is the circuit that drives the motor, it's not always the best on design (speaking for the Chinese lathes) having as result lack of power on the motor. The second but relatively minor issue is that the feeding-threading gear box (on most of the variable speed lathes) has a bit limited range, you need to change more often the combination of the gears on the banjo to achive other set of threads and feeds through the gear box. The positives are the wide speed adjustment range in combination to higher spindle speeds and the easiness to CNC modification. Now, geared lathes have steady power based on the motor's HP and the spindle gears and wider feeding-threading abilities. The downside is first the limited speed range and second the difficulty of a CNC conversion. All the best Jimmy

That's not a geared head stock lathe model I've seen yet. Other than for flood coolant drainage, that exact level is meaningless. A highly accurate level condition is simply the easiest way to ensure the lathe bed ways are in a non twisted condition. That .01 degree of being within level? That may or may not be accurate enough. Only test cuts and measuring for taper would say for sure. If it were me I'd also pull and clean the carriage oil sump. I'm positive you'll find more than enough grinding dust inside just like you found in the head stock. I've found draining the oil and then flushing it with clean diesel and then refilling with clean oil to work about the best. Adding a small magnet into a corner and out of the way spot in the head and carriage sump is cheap insurance I think.
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment, I really appreciate it! You are absolutely right for what you said about leveling; I will really like to know more about, can you suggest me where to look? Thanks for the tips as well, the magnet will definitely help! Regards from Greece Jimmy
@turningpoint6643
@turningpoint6643 3 жыл бұрын
@@JimmysCanal Lathe leveling or a better description would be getting the lathe bed to a parallel non twisted condition requires a complex explanation. It also depends on just what equipment you have available. I can say without a doubt it's worth all the time and trouble it takes. The first step unless your going to run a full series of tests over the full machine would be to get the tail stocks internal Morse Taper centered to the head stocks center of rotation. To do that, run the lathe carriage up as close to the head stock as you can get it. Mount a magnetic base and your dial test indicator to either the lathe face plate or lathe chuck. Then move the tail stock up until it's internal Morse Taper can be reached with the dial test indicators ball tip and it can be can be set just inside that taper with the shortest extension possible on the magnetic bases arms. Swing the indicator side to side by rotating the lathe spindle. Adjust the tail stock until it's zero / zero in both directions. NOTE!!!!! Very important, the tail stocks vertical elevation CAN NOT!!!! be checked in this way. Gravity effects will bend the magnetic bases arms and the dial test indicator enough the measurements will be meaningless. It will work well enough to get the tail stock centered and that's your initial starting point. With that done then the best way to make the critical turning tests and measurements is to mount the work piece between centers and make a light longitudinal pass along the work until it fully cleans up. Then measure each end of the work. Lets say the tail stock end is slightly small compared to the head stocks end. That means the lathe bed at the tail stock end needs to be slightly twisted towards the cutting tool or moved higher at the tail stocks side that's furthest away from the operator. I highly recommend printing off this whole PDF located here Testing Machine Tools - PEARL HiFi and reading it in detail until it's fully understood what's being tested, how it's done and why. That PDF forms the basis of machine tool tests and alignment checks that are still used today on the latest and worlds best CNC or manual machines being built today. If you read and fully understand it you'll then know more than probably 90% of hobbyist's and a great many professional machinists know about the subject. The test methods within that PDF aren't the only way the tests can be done. But there proven to work as well or better than any other methods. The worlds most perfect lathe "leveling" does not provide a fully finished condition. Because of unavoidable flex and movements within the machine due to cutting forces that perfect level condition only gets you very very close. Further tiny but critical adjustments away from that perfectly level condition are required to help compensate for those cutting loads and forces. I can and have adjusted machines in mostly new condition within .0002" -/.005 mm over a part length of 12" / 305 mm
