Catching Dinosaurs

Catching Dinosaurs

4 жыл бұрын

I decided to make a comprehensive guide to catch and release alligator gar fishing.
I start by showed the 3 methods i use to target these fish.
I start the day with my standard 4/0 j hook and catch a very nice 5 foot alligator gar on it.
From there i move on to my tiny 1/0 j hook and lose a river monster on it after several minutes of intense fight where it towed my kayak all over. I put the same hook and bait out and catch a 130 pound giant.
I ran out of time to film the third part of my video the hook less part where im using whats called a gar lasso to snare the gars snout instead of using hooks to catch them.
I totally understand if some of the info is hard to follow i tried my very best to film by my self and to explain everything the best i could. If you have any questions please please please ask away in the comment section.
Thank you for watching look for a part two in the future.
The 4/0 J hooks model number is SL11-3h-3x strong
The 1/0 J hook is a Gamgatsu live bait 1/0 j hook.

Man this video is great! I have always wanted to get into alligator gar fishing and your video makes it seem very do-able. You're right when you say there's not a lot of do it yourself alligator gar fishing videos. Thanks a bunch for making this one. I like how you have thought out how to be the least damaging to the fish as well. The point of catch and release is to have a live fish to release 😄. Your gar snare rig reminds me of the nooses used for catching crocodilians. What are some of your favorite fishing braid brands for gator gar fishing?

What I do with any fish is I use a barbless hook I squeeze the Barb down flat with a pair of pliers and it comes out really easy and it's a little more challenging. But there's probably about an 8-foot gar that keeps swimming around my boat here in the marina and chasing off all the fish so today I am going to catch him thanks to your video I'm using whole fish though mullet and Croakers. Thanks for the tips good day to you

Sad to say that the first gar I've seen was a dried up Longnose on the banks of the Arkansas. I always wondered why they were so hated. They are beautiful masters of the river, and we are the shepards of the rivers. I saw my first spotted gar in a canal off the Arkansas last year, just relaxing in the shallows. I'm curious about trying to catch me one, but was always worried about injuring them accidentally. This video was very informative and entertaining, thank you for putting this out there.

I live in fort Worth Texas and when I was a kid (17) me and my brother wanted to try out fishing since our parents were way to busy to ever do anything with us. It literally took a solid year of hitting the trinity river and trying a bunch of rigs. What works best for is a bobber J hook and a live blue Gil. Just got back into fishing and 29 now. Hopefully trinity river isn't too fished out now

I'd say for that lasso one to use a small paper clip to clip the two swivels together. Should be enough to allow you to cast it out but still allow you to cinch down the loop around their snout.

I fish for sport mainly the only freshwater fish I'll eat is crappie everything else is just for fun and you being a guide like me I hate leaving a hook in any fish mouth but sometimes you have to but if you know you can't physically remove a hook from a gars mouth by yourself then why do you use the hook method when you fish alone unless your planning on keeping the fish then it doesn't matter but I'm sure with your experience you know the nylon rope method which is basically making a lure out of about 4 to 6 inches of nylon rope burn one end and unravel and brush the rest out and basically use it as a top water lure the rope wraps up in their teeth and they dont get off then you just pull the rope out when you land the fish then the fish doesn't have to swim around for however long until the hook left in finally falls out if it ever does I just feel its much better for the fish if you know your not able to pull a hook by yourself which I have done a few times on big gar and I hate gar I think their nasty like carp butdont wanna kill for no reason
