This is not a recent clip of Groningen. I found the promotion of shops and restaurants irritating, there are way more interesting places to eat and shop. But it is definitely a great city to visit and explore! I love living here! It's like a small version of Amsterdam.

Groningen, my Alma Mater. Happy memories. 😊 Groningen is also called “the Amsterdam of the North”. In my time, a third of the people living in the city center was a student, so you always met friends just by stepping outside. The university, which is 407 years old this year, has always played an important role in the city. And the city has no limits on opening hours of bars, so you can literally party around the clock. Not to mention grabbing a fried fish at 6.00 AM at the market for breakfast before going to bed. 😋😁

As someone who's lived in Groningen for over half a decade now, I felt like this video was mostly just promotalk. What's most special about the city is the fact that a quarter of its residents are students. In that sense, it might very well be the most energetic city of the country. There are a lot of student organisations, too. Think of a sport or hobby and there will be a group of students organizing events around that, usually followed by some beers in the pub. The nightlife is absolutely fantastic, since there's one area with some good no-nonsense venues. Lots of alcohol, very little problems with drunk people, too, somehow. I could go on for hours describing the city, but I think this line from the Groningen anthem summarizes it best: High up north lies a city, that has always had the atmosphere of a village

Would've loved to see more of the student culture, the beautiful parks all around the city, the sick dance and rave events (we were voted #1 event city in NL in 2019) and our infamous traffic lights where they go green for the cyclists from all directions

Funny, as a student I worked in De Pauw. I ran into the owner every now and then at that cheese shop, and used give him unsollicited advice on the cheese boards he was ordering there. The cheese shop owner and I tend to agree on cheese, as just a former dishwasher that feels a bit like revenge. I don't believe it's a particular good video btw, low budget commercial city promotion with the shops and restaurants paying for their part. It doesn't show what makes Groningen special, except for that cheese shop. It's true that it's very laid back, but that goes for the fashion to, no pressure. It's the most informal and least fashionable big city in the Netherlands probably. What makes it special is that's only proper city in the middle of a great nowhere, including a slab of Germany. So it's a magnet for everybody seeking liveliness, a buzz, it's not just students, but traditionally also other young people. The centre is extremely compact because of the ring canal around it, so that makes it very lively, and it's the most cycling city of the Netherlands (and therefore the world). It's the only city with no closing hours, but that's only one reason why the night life is legendary. There's lots of music venues and it houses an annual music festvial for European bands that still have to break through (Eurosonic/Noorderslag), with 40-50.000 visitors from outside. I've seen music journalists describe it as an otherwise sleepy town being stormed with music lovers, but it's only slightly more busy, the regular night life just absorbs it. There are stages everywhere, in small pubs and cellars and student associations or whatever. But normally, yes you can go out every day of the week and there will be concerts in more than one venue to choose from. The mentioned Oosterpoort is nice but there's also undergroud music venues. Especially Vera has a reputation for discovering bands early. U2, Nirvana, Weezer, Bauhaus, Soungarden, Joy Division, Slayer, Beck, Nick Cave, Simple Minds, the Cure, they've all played there. I'm not up to date with the latest additions. Oosterpoort I've also been a lot but more for people like George Clinton, David Byrne, G-Love and Special Sauce.

Groningen is unique in the World. 25% of the city's population is younger than 25 years of age, due to many many students. After Amsterdam, the city of Groningen has the highest budget, per person, for cultural events. Public bars and nightclubs do not have a obliged closing time set. So 24 hrs a day, there's always something open for drinks and food. Just at the southwest of Groningen, the area of North-Drenthe starts. That area has been designated by a survey of Rabobank and the University of Utrecht, as the area with the highest quality of life, in comparison to all other parts of the Netherlands. So as the Netherlands ranks high in the international lists of best places to live and work; on a global scale, Groningen is for sure among the best areas to live in. Groningen has a dense city structure and almost every major event, cultural places, bars, shops and nighclubs are packed within half of a square mile. Groningen is a charming gem!

Most energetic has a double meaning: it is a lively city and province, but it also lays on the biggest natural gas field in Europe. The little cleaning cars have steel brushes under it and a vacuum cleaner, when the street is dry it sprays water to prevent dust clouds that would highly irritate people shopping.

Finally you react to my city! Its nice you ask to see videos other than amsterdam. So many cities are just a beautiful, just as old. just as entertaining. And I see you get more and more enthusiastic to come here. I don't understand though why they show such high-class restaurants. I personally never heard or noticed "De pauw" restaurant" or the Bistro. There are so many restaurants in Groningen and all unique in ambiance and interior. ( I think they showed only half of whats good about the city haha. But I am biased :D And yes in the Oosterpoort almost every night there is some kind of concert, big or small artists. For example 3th of october 2021 Danny vera and 4th of october Ilse de Lange. and that the whole year. Fun Fact, Groningen does not have official closing hours for bars and cafe's ;)

'The most energetic' is most likely a pun on that Groningen is the capital of the Groningen province which sits on a very large gas bubble that has provided the Netherlands with a lot of energy. The gas field is no longer exploited because of it causing small earthquakes and damaged houses. I don't feel that would have stopped the government or the gas company in the states, but it did here.

@@metalvideos1961 Utrecht - which I know quite well - is ok.But before you make that claim you really need to study the urban layout concept of Groningen and watch a few video's with opions of city planners on that subject.

33:06 yes.. and there is a more underground one aswell.. Vera.. I stumbled in there early 1990's and there was a noisy band playing, singer with a voice like a sawmill in his throat.. turned out that singer and his band ha a worldwide album classic with a baby swimming on it... yes Nirvana, just before they became famous, they where doing club tours to learn the knacks of touring... 5 guilders, approx 2 dollar to have seen Nirvana live :D... but earlier, Simple Minds, U2, Ramones, Blondie, The Clash, Siouxy and the Banshees

Energetic, slightly a misnomer but below their feet there is a fairly large pocket of gas. Maybe that might be the why that adjective is used. Sadly that bubble is slowly pumped dry, causing buildings to sink, getting demolished in the process.

Nice video about Groningen. But al we get to see is quite expensive. Like the restaurants with nouveau cuisine, paying more as 30 euro's for nothing to get satisfied on your plate, yes nice to taste and nice to see. Like the shops, all glamour. You'll get the same in Amsterdam, Arnhem, Nijmegen etc.e ven in my little hometown. We have a Dutch frase for this:"Kouwe kak".

Sadly it's just a commercial film. The town has a rich history and many lovely sight seeing spots which are not in this video. If you ever will visit Groningen, many of the restaurants, shops and museums shown do no longer exist.

Hi. It’s a bit of a pity they don’t tell anything about the university in Groningen, which is an important reason for young people to move to the city and thus contribute to the culture. 35.000 students, 6.000 staff, at a population of no more than 203.000 people. But that’s only the ‘Rijksuniversiteit Groningen’. There are other institutions for higher education that add thousands more of students and staff. Okay, they do talk about ‘many students’, briefly.

Rightly or not, Groningen has the name of being a haven of history, activity and culture in the middle of nowhere in the Netherlands. I don't think it is the most energetic city in the Netherlands. That honour has to go to Amsterdam and Rotterdam. But maybe Groningen is third together with Maastricht. Oddly enough the most northern city and the most southern city.

Groningen definitely is the most energetic city, maybe ONLY behind Amsterdam. Rotterdam is far from energetic, it’s boring and far from busy or ‘gezellig,’ especially for its size. Groningen on the other hand doesn’t have closing times for bars and cafe’s. It’s got 575 bars and cafe’s compared to Amsterdams 1000 (despite Amsterdam being four times bigger) and Maastrichts 130. This is mainly because 1/4th of the residents is made up out of students which grants it a really unique and lively atmosphere AND makes it the second ‘youngest’ city in the Netherlands!

Most energetic is propaganda of course. ETA: A lot of this is propaganda. But! So my sister in law is from a town between San Antonio and Austin and I lived there for most of 3 months (3 months is usually the amount of time you can stay anywhere) in my siter in law's house. Austin calls itself the live music capital of the world and close to where I lived was Grüne where they have live concerts all the time too. There was even a bicycle path from New Braunfels there. So my SIL and her friends argue that there's no live music culture here.
