Project Jacquard is a new system for weaving technology into fabric, transforming everyday objects, like clothes, into interactive surfaces. Project Jacquard will allow designers and developers to build connected, touch-sensitive textiles into their own products. This is just the beginning, and we're very excited to see what people will do with it. Learn more at www.projectjacquard.com.

These input technologies (Jacquard and Silo) are the perfect complement for AR glasses. Imagine walking on the street with hands in the pocket seeing infos augmented to the glasses and controlling them with a subtle gestures. No tapping/swiping on the glasses, no voice needed, all done with the hands inside the pocket.

***** I think I get your point. But technologies like these are also needed before EEG's maturity. I mean, technologies should be for all people. How would people feel if the device on their head are receiving brainwaves even if they are not commanding? That would be a big attacking point for the conspiracy theorists. Yes, EEG should be the paramount, but there should also be other HCIs for different needs. My opinions. :)

@@lflee 7 years ago you guys had nothing to worry about compared to these days. Google glass or any other AR headset could never communicate with your brain or receive brain waves (the technology and understanding of the brain didn't exist yet), where as now a days a neuro link can read your brainwaves and reconstruct the thoughts you had, and literally reprogram parts of your brain. He has made the claim it will be possible with them to "reverse paralysis and rebuild the neural pathways to the nervous system." Which implies the exact opposite would be possible too. Remotely paralyzing someone. But hey who cares, cause you got your wish and saved the world considering google jacquard was shutdown a few weeks ago, you know the thing that was never concerning or dangerous to begin with, and now it'll be replaced by technology that can literally remotely kill you from the inside out.

I like the tech and can already think of a few things to do with it. 1: tactical training 2: put it in bulletproof vests so a paramedic teem can know where to look for the bullet that did penetrate. 3: physical therapy, you could use it to show progress. 4: workout / fitness, use as an input to modify workout parameters.

Brings a new interpretation to the colloquialism 'butt dialing'. Seriously though, while it has applications most of them would require pairing to a device that is probably going to be in your pocket and I think the radar tech they're working on has more promise since it should be able to read through fabrics, possibly multiple layers. Just fit one of the radar sensors on the back of a phone case or inside the back of the device, make sure the back is facing away from the body and you have access.

Oh my god I can't believe it's already happening. Embedding technology into a fabric has come to my imagination 3 years ago and I even presented my concept as part of our thesis but the only difference is that my idea was organic LEDs embeded through the fabric so you can change the color or design of the fabric by just a single tap.

Great news. Interesting new technology. Now, the question that has been evaded. What's the cost that comes with adding a textile sensible control in the clothing? How much more will we have to pay for this feature? Remember that the concept runs around the fact that "more components" will be added to the manufacturing process. More component is equivalent to more shipping costs and then higher selling prices. I'm not even writing about the rarity of the component materials that is yet to be known that allow the yarns' conductivity. Also, what kind of guaranties will there be? Remember that this will make the clothes enter the "electronics" laws about customers rights for flawed devices, but unlike the actual electronics, it will still be considered as clothes for disposals. If, for example, you buy a jacket that have a none-working zone, what then? More e-Waste? We need some answers for that and not only for the customers side, but also to know if we're just dumping some new tech around while still wondering what will be its actual recycled life (like we did with PCs, Cellphones and many electronic devices for many years).

I mean, if it's super-cheap to the point where I could easily buy an entire wardrobe with this feature then I guess it could be useful for trivial stuff like... drum pants or something. But aside from that, I'm having trouble imagining a real use case for this. Oh well, maybe someone will come up with a good use for this at some point.
