Before the coronavirus crisis, we spent a day with the Royal Dragoon Guards, in what was their final training before lockdown. They were being put through their paces at Catterick’s newly refurbished state-of-the-art urban training area, Whinny Hill, which has had £1.2 million spent on it.

I always thought blank firing was only really good for getting that very first field style training and thought process engrained. The benefits being, troops first learn what it feels like to reload under pressure, what it feels like to try and squeeze off those rounds under control after losing breathing control from frantically running to the engagement area, etc. But when it stepped up a bit and it came to room clearing, how do instructors know that students would've or wouldn't have been shot when engaging someone posing as the enemy also firing blanks? Also, when I did blank firing training for the first few times in the field, I found the people to my left and right were just shouldering their rifle and squeezing off rounds as if they were providing supressive fire, even though there was a clear enemy in front of us to engage. One guy literally fired 6 blanks aimed at a bush 3 meters in front of him when we were meant to engage 😂😂 Im going off on a tangent, but yeah, blanks are good for seeing how troops behave under pressure, how they communicate, how they reload, how they move through buildings, but when the marksmanship element comes into it, blanks are useless. Simunition looks excellent, obviously not as accurate as standard jacket 5.56, but would be excellent for room clearing, wish I stuck around to have a go.

They aren't using blanks, they're using simunition. It's a paintball type round that hurts when you get hit

@C that's been around for a long time. Years ago in my first job outside the army I built something similar to what you described and as you can imagine, troops shoot all over the place a lot of the time!!

You do realise each state’s national guard are bigger than the British Armed Forces right? Never mind the regular and reserve US Armed Forces. Not to mention the constitution which would undoubtedly prohibit using foreign troops?

Absolute joke of skills. Non infantry teaching infantry basic skills of FIBUA AND FISCH. And then deploying to teach a foreign nation. Leave the infantry to teach infantry skills and the REMFS to guard the camp.

You can pass basic and become a full soldier without ever really doing any Urban training. Urban is the most dangerous environment and requires advanced techniques in order to operate efficiently. Besides, these guys mostly look like young lads so they aren't far into training regardless.
